Patty--I am so sorry that I am late to this, but keep the posts on Paris coming, babe!

For now, all I will say is: Viva la France, viva Paris!

Hugs and love!

Your problem was the the typical Franco/American cultural disconnect. Smiling at strangers on the street is not done in France. Anyone visiting Paris for the first time should read Polly Platt's "French or Foe" or "Savoir Flair" - it wouldn't hurt to read both. I had been to France several times before I got those books, and I can't say that I had really bad experiences, but, thanks to Platt, I understand sooo much more and have consequently had nothing but wonderful interactions with the French. And my French is not that good, but they love that you make a (polite) effort and then put you out of your misery by speaking English.

Yes!!! My husband falls asleep before take off & stays asleep until we land. Drives me nuts that he can do that. I can only sleep a bit if I am splayed out taking up 3 seats ~ GREEDY little me ~ LOL

What really threw me off was how scared the Parisiennes seemed to
be of strangers. They would not make eye contact, would get incredibly shaken up if smiled at & one woman even backed up & did the hundred yard dash away from me when i tried to ask her where she got her falaffel ~ I swear, I was NOT going to take her food from her!!! We were looking for the place i had the best Falaffel EVER exactly 16 years on my honeymoon.
I played a game & tried to see how many people I could get to smile back at me. Seems people with children are more willing to make contact & the one really nice smile I got back from a man in the metro I realized was an American.
The people in the shops were as warm & friendly as could be. they laughed & chatted & seemed quite at ease even with my rudimentary french. But out in the streets (uh oh uh oh oh)
