You can never have red lipsticks enough, right? If you’re me, one is too many… or so I thought. March is fully to blame for this red lipstick thing, it’s just insiduous how you just start thinking about it and then wondering if you really could pull off red lips. This is the ridiculously overpriced Serge Lutens No. 1 Mise en Mort, I think it’s called, but SAs refer to it as 1. So does it work with my coloring, etc? Or am I just thinking it does and will be laughed at when I go out in public? Can I really pull this off? I’m depending on y’all not to lie to me, I need the truth. Do you all also know how hard it is to take a picture of yourself? You just feel so self-conscious and weird, and it always takes about 30 photos before you find even one you can live with. Not like, mind you, live with. The beauty, as I said in Tuesday’s post, is this lasts forever. Sure, it’s 75 smackeroos, but when almost every lipstick I’ve put on comes off in about 10 minutes. This one has been on for an hour and counting, with almost no change, no bleeding, no moving around, all fairly important things in your dark reds. Is it worth $75? Good Lord, of course not, but it is for me because it’s the only lipstick, especially red, that I’ve put on so far in my life that hasn’t wound up all in the corners of my mouth in 10 minutes.So if you think this shade doesn’t work, despite my thinking it totally does, what other red would you recommend for my coloring? And while we are making recommendations, I think I need to trim my hair back up about a half inch or so, yes? Or should I go a little longer?

As for lipliner – do not use the nude – go for a reddish brown one a tad darker than the lipstick.

It looks fantastic! That brighter red is great on a blonde. Imo, red lipstick is more about a state of mind (not unlike proper perfume), it’s not as if you look/smell freakish, but you’re not used to it, so you feel a little discomfited until you realize there’s nothing to worry about.
NARS makes a fat pencil, not inexpensive for sure, but better than $75, that lasts forever and doesn’t smear.
Hi Patty! My opinion: use brow powder to darken and thicken brows; lipstick a lighter, muted rose; hair longer (and since it’s thick your stylist should be able to have NO problem with this); and hair shade is fine! The blood-red takes away from everything–especially your eyes. It’s too overwhelming. You ARE a brave soul to post your photo and allow everyone to comment! It shows your confidence and belief in the good-nature/honesty of your many readers.
Patty, you are SO very brave. I looked and thought for a while, without reading anyone’s comments. First thought was your hair should be a darker, richer brown to pull this off. YOu look like you are meant to be a brunette. Second, I got kind of stuck on “does it go with your coloring,” because I’m not sure you have the right foundation color? I’m thinking the foundation is too pink for you. Sorry for unsolicited opinion. (ducks)

Patty,you look great, but I’m sure it’s even better in real life, walking around, smiling, talking. Your hair and eyebrows are fine and the mouth does not overpower them. I’m not sure if anyone has mentioned this, but I think that anything eyecatching like red lipstick or a hat requires great posture and a smile. A still photograph is kind of hard to judge, but so far so good. I used to pretend I was James Bond’s girlfriend when I wore red lipstick, but y’know? I think I’m getting just a little too old for that kind of nonsense.

And Patty, I agree with JAntoinette – confidence is key! If you feel comfortable and confident and beautiful with red lips, rock it! I remember reading something from Bobbi Brown years ago. She said to try different colors on with the rest of your face bare. You’ll know when you find the right color, cause your skin will come alive. I think everyone can wear a red lipstick, but the tone is so important. This tone seems to work on you, though if you’re not quite happy with it, keep trying different shades to find the “perfect” one.
Pale and natural lips have been “in” for so long that it feels weird to wear a dark lip. If I put on a dark lip, I immediately tone it down with a neutral beige or something to knock down the color. Ten/twenty years ago or so, though, I wouldn’t have done that. I wore various shades of red without reservation. Perhaps that’s where the hesitancy comes from in wearing red. It’s been out of style for s long! Perhaps we should all bring it back. Let’s start a movement!!! The red lip movement! Ha ha…

I agree with comments about darker eyeliner, hair, & brows. My question about red lips concerns one’s dentals – ‘does the color of one’s teeth matter?’- is the red enhanced if teeth are more whiteish or more yellowish? or is that not a consideration? I’m asking because mine are less then pearly white.
The blue reds are supposed to help teeth, or so I’ve heard!

I would be Auburn in a flash and was once, but the upkeep with the roots was brutal! But it was my favorite haircolor, and every picture I have of me in it is just perfection.
I like it! I vote that this be the start of your “wardrobe of reds,” and I recommend a light glaze red (Laura Mercier’s Poppy is a coral red that rocks on warm light skin like you and I both have), maybe also consider MAC chili or Viva Glam 1 as well.
GO RED! You will *always* have some folks saying red is “too much.” As is the case with most real personal and edgy style, some folks won’t appreciate while others will love it.
I have aChanel red gloss that sounds like what your’e talking about, but I’ll check out that Laura Mercier, it sounds great!

I LOVE the red lippie on you, and it’s really dramatic with your eyes and perfect skin. I do like the idea of enriching/warming the hair color to a honeyed brown-blond and enhancing your brows a little… but honestly, the flash robs you of a little of the richness of your coloring in the photo and I think it’s stunning as/is. I am so jealous; I’m awful in red lips (rosacea means I’m awful in cool colors AND reds, wheee!)
Did you ever try IPL laser for the rosacea? I use it and am due for another zapping. It’s great at helping that!
I didn’t — but I’m intrigued. At the moment I am totally untreated because I am trying to conceive and I am mortally terrified of “Category B” medications. Maybe the IPL laser is the way to go.
I’ll echo what some of the other posters have said: more definition on the eyebrow, add the lip liner to get a crisp edge, more brown in your hair wouldn’t hurt. Now for one of my own: you may want to concentrate more on the lower lids. More definition with eyeliner there will help balance out the strong lip color. It doesn’t have to be thick, but it should be noticeable enough to break up the face + eye color block. I find that a black, smudgeable eyeliner that you can blend into the eyelashes of the lower lid works well for this, but if your lashes are brown/blond, you’ll want to go with a dark brown color (med. brown might match better, but it may also clash with the lip color).

When I go red I like to use one of those transparent liners. You put them around your lips and the lipstick does not escape. I have an avon one that’s pretty good but duwop, benefit, cargo, etc. have them. Knowing that your lipstick is not all over your face is key for the confidence factor. I say that there’s no harm in experimenting with makeup. As my mom says, “what’s the worst that can happen?” Makeup washes off and hair grows out. A professor I once had wore a shocking fuchsia lip every day and I loved it. Rock the hell out of your reds.

I absolutely love red lipstick and probably have about 8-10. I think the red looks great on you but agree that a lipliner would make it look better. I would love to find that shade you are wearing. My latest purchase is Too Faced “Runway Red.” I love it; however my young niece said that with my red hair I had a “Bozo the Clown” vibe going on. I still laugh when I think about it.
There is an Armani lipwax that is close to this shade. Not quite the same, but leaning to the blue red.

Lord knows I can barely figure out what the right look is for my face, let alone someone else’s. But I do love a good eyebrow and have mine professionally done every four weeks or so. May I suggest, as a few others have, that your brows be a bit more defined and arched.

You know, I did blot it down after I took the picture, and it suited me better. Just a little softer, but the same shade. I went to yoga class and still had this soft beautiful red stain when I came home.
Can we talk about Serge’s mascara? Same thing – no smudging, nothing, all the way through a slightly sweaty yoga class and my lips and eyelashes were perfect.

Yes,I do agree with those who have suggested a slightly more defined eye, and a brunette tone for your hair. The swept back/ off the face hair suggestion also seems to be a good one. The lip color IS very pretty on you, a wonderful red for your skin tone and eyes, and I think if you play with the other suggestions a bit, you may hit on a look that is VERY chic.

I have to be careful with the maintenance on darker. I’m naturally blondish, dark blonde, and the root upkeep is extreme unless I can do a nice graduation thing. But I am leaning that way, it just needs to be done.
I have a lot of, er, gray on top so I do the new growth with Preference in a neutral dark blond shade, then my hairstylist adds highlights and lowlights. More lowlights=darker hair. Mine’s also thick and heavy, but have finally found a way to color it that looks natural and doesn’t fry it.
Isn’t it awful about photographs? When I was younger I used to look at mine and say “eeeewwwww” because I thought I looked so fat/pale/overbite/flat-chested/drab/thick-ankled/big-kneed etc, etc etc. Now I look at the same ones and say, “Hey, I was pretty hot!” But all the forces in the beauty/fashion/ideal universe seem to conspire to make us look bad to ourselves, which is such a shame. (Of course I still look at my pictures and go “eeeewwww!” But now I know how to retouch them in Photoshop.)

It’s a great color on you, and I concur with … whoever that I’m wondering if you can darken your brows a touch to help balance? I think that would be enough without darkening your hair. My brows are graying and thin and I use a dark brown brow powder and an angled brush, which I think is softer than pencil. I’ve also decided that those bright precision reds really cry out for a liner, in my opinion. Liners are also more forgiving in terms of creating even lips (mine are lopsided side to side, I have to do a little “correcting.”)
I’ll wrap up by saying that having worn red lips almost daily for several weeks now, I’ve developed a comfort level with it, it feels more natural to me (at first it was just fun.) And it’s still fun to have ladies come up to me and ask what I’m wearing, as one did the other day in Saks, to the annoyance of the Guerlain counter SA who was trying to make her over in something else. 🙂

Believe it or not, I did put on my brows. :(( They are so blonde, and I know I need to tint them, but the last time was just so, well, wrong, I’m afraid to have it done again. But I trust Jessican, so I just might do it.

I think the red is a great shade for you. Nice with your skintone, hair color and eyes. And I too believe (stealing from Louise) that there is a red for everyone. As for other makeup changes, I’m with Vidalicious. A bit of work on the eyebrows, which are so important for framing the eyes, and you are pretty much good to go.
As for your hair, I would like to see it longer. I think that it would be very nice at slightly below chin length, giving you the ability to curl it under a bit. But you are blessed with a very evenly shaped face, allowing you to wear your hair at many lengths, so this is really just a personal preference thing. In other words, you look great, and I personally love the lipstick!
Thanks, Melissa! Longer hair tends to pull my face down. I might be able to get away with it now, and I just might give it a try! My hair is so thick and heavy and corae, we have to razor it to within an inch of its life to take the weight off of it, so longer is tricky!
I just wish I could wear red lipstick. You have nice full lips; mine are thin (and getting thinner, alas.) Red ages me about 10 years.
I would punch up the rest a little bit, though, brows — Revlon has recently come out with a product called “Colorstay” which is a wax-based tint — it actually colors the eyebrow hairs themselves — which I’m finding works well and looks natural (especially since I have a few gray hairs in my eyebrows, aaarrrugh!!) which is $8.99 at Walgreen’s. Maybe back-comb the hair a little, you know, just a little more impact to go with the red lips. God knows I’m no stylist, though!
I know I’m lucky with my lips. I wish they were a little fuller, but Juvaderm works wonders with keeping them from thinning more, which is the thing about aging that I hated the most.

I think the color is beautiful and looks lovely with your skin tone and eyes. However, I agree with some other posters in thinking you would look devastatingly beautiful if your eyebrows were just a bit more defined and your hair a little bit darker.
I’m older than you are so I have not attempted red lips in a very long time but I have always loved red lips with hair swept away from the face.
It is wonderful to know SL lasts a long time on lips because lipstick lasts about 10 minutes on me, too.

I think the trend is what you say, and I was already getting ready to do somethng a little darker, honeyed with my hair, and that seems like a good change that will fit with being able to wear a bolder lip.
I think the red looks good. I’ve had to give up bright/dark reds as in the last few years I’ve found them kind of ageing (I’m 10 years older than you). The subtlety of your eye makeup is perfect with the Wow! of the lip color (and your eyes themselves look beautiful!),
I did find a red that still looks lovely on me, btw, EL Autumn, a very soft browny, shimmery red that doesn’t make me look like Norma Desmond.
Hair: what about brushing the sides back off your face, maybe some waves? There. I’ve just channelled half of my high school teachers.
You know, you might have a point, it may be the bobbines of my hair that interferes, and if I just blow dry in back more and spray it, it will open up the face more so the lips don’t seem closed off. Must try this!

I think it looks lovely. You have the perfect amount of eye definition to bring out your green eyes without competing.
I wear red lips, although not everyday. I have days when I just feel the need for something bolder. I have found the secret of red lips (besides the liner and finding the perfect shade, etc.) and it’s confidence. You have to be comfortable with the idea that people will notice you. Stranger’s eyes will linger on your lips. It is a bold and very classic, ladylike choice. It’s a conscious statement: that you are a sensual woman. Your perfume may whisper or shout on a red day, but your lips make the statement!
I agree. Up until the last few weeks, I just thought I couldn’t wear it at all, so opening up my mind to the possibility, then finding some shades that did work, even if it’s not ever my best look, like some people just look amazing in red lips, and that will always be their best look. It’s just a good change for when you want to say something and not whisper
I agree with those who like how the lipstick looks but suggest a change regarding your hair. Have you considered going darker? I think you’d be a stunning brunette 😉 Your eyes would stand out more and perhaps the red lips would stand out less. I hope this helps.

People just don’t agree on red, do they? I’m tending to agree with the change of hair color, maybe to a more honeyed brown’ish and a little stronger eyebrows.

I think it is a great red on you! Much prettier than the gal whose photo you had the link to a couple days ago (I thought it too dark on her.) It does work beautifully with your eyes and skin. I like the thin line of liquid eyeliner, too– I like to rock that look myself, when a) my hand is steady enough or b) I have enough time to start over as often as necessary. And hey, it’s such a pretty red on you that I say rock it whenever you see fit! Live it up. All you need for lip liner is a nude that matches your natural lip color. Fill your lips in all the way with the liner, then apply the red over it. :)>-

A neutral liner will eliminate the need to find a perfect match, and will keep the red truer. Filling your lips in all the way will help prevent the inevitable ring-around-the-mouth.
When I do my red, I either keep it demi-matte and do nothing or apply a champagne-colored gloss over it.
There, you’ve gotten your advice from folks all over the board, so at this point I say to go with your gut. Or experiment. Wow, that was helpful wasn’t it? 😕

That’s why I always say go with what you like and screw everyone else;) But here’s my opinion, since you asked- I think that color looks great on you. And yes, some liner would make it look even better. And a wee bit of a darker brow. I like the length of your hair and think you would still look great with it maybe an inch or two longer. so, yes, yay on that red for you! I don’t think it’s too much at all. It’s fun to be able to wear red when you’re in the mood!
Patty dear, I have to agree with Cheryl here, the hair and the lips just don’t jive and that gorgeous red looks distracting. It’s a beautiful color,it just doesn’t work with the rest of your look.
I think a lighter red or something rosy and more natural would “open up” and light up your pretty face, this red is way too dark.

But what color hair do you t hink would make it more cohesive? I change my hair color umpteen times a year, though I’ve been stuck in a blonder mode for the last two or three sessions.
Eyebrows, dahlink, eyebrows! They need a touch of definition to balance the gorgeous lips (ooo, so kissable!)
I always feel so clownish with too much eyebrow! Maybe I’ll have my talented waxing person take a stab at it. Last time I did it by someone else, it was just tooooo much, and I cringed for a week looking in the mirror.
Eyebrows: my eyebrows have a pretty nice shape naturally, but are fairly light in color and have one or two little bare spots. I never thought I could wear eyebrow pencil because it would give me Frankenstein brow,but then I discovered the concept of the lightest color possible so you don’t look like Faye Dunaway in Mommie Dearest. Aim for something between skin tone and hair tone and it should look great. The “Colorstay” mentioned by Olfacta is indeed a good product.
But I DO use a pencil or powder on my eyebrows just in that color, and this is all I get! 😮
I’m going to second (third? tenth?) the eyebrow suggestion to balance out that fabulous red. You have dark enough undertones in your hair that you could go a smidgen darker with the brows; not Joan Crawford, mind you, but a bit more than what you’ve got now. Then again, I’m a brow freak — even if I don’t put a stitch of other makeup on, I can’t live without my brow pencil (I like Sonia Kashuk’s brow pencil and Benefit’s Brow-zing kit).
You know, I think you can carry the red lip look, but I can’t help but think its either 1.not really YOU, or, 2.not your best look.
I am not phobic about red (loved Joni Mitchell in her gorgeous red lips phase),and actually enjoy makeup very much, but at the end of the day, I have to ask – is it enhancing or distracting? As a somewhat dramatic redhead with good bones and good genes, I have dabbled in the red lip look myself. I have to admit that while I thought I carried it off well, I did feel I was being stared at to an uncomfortable degree…reminiscent of the time I had a makeover at a Lancome counter a few years back. Though the stylists were gushing over my new look, a quick glance in a mirror ten minutes later revealed the face of an incredibly dazzling transvestite.
So,to be honest with you, love, I have to say no, not so fabulous. Stick with a rosy peach.

Well, I absolutely agree it’s not my best look, and I have a great red gloss from Chanel that works amazing, but I just wanted to find “the shade” that if I were inclined to do a red lip, that I could. Normally, my lips always are a rosy peach or nudey pink – well, for as long as it stays on, which is the 10 minutes I mention.
But do you think, as others have sugggested, that a stronger brow, liner and maybe a little different, warmer or cooler hair cooler might make it work better?
Well, to quote my favorite red lipstick maven, there’s a red for everyone. And I think this red suits you well. It’s surely a punch of color, but I like that you’re only wearing a bit of eye makeup with it. I do think it could use a good liner, and am not convinced that you couldn’t find a very close match in a less costly line-Smashbox Legend, maybe.

I had a perfect red liner that I bought in Paris that went missing in the bag with the other lipsticks. It was an Armani one, and I need to go get another one, it definitely needs that, but I had to just go as is. 🙂
If you don’t feel like springing for an Armani liner, MAC has a wonderful range in neutrals and a couple of good reds-Red Enriched goes well with a strong red lippie.
I have several nude liners. It never occurred to me that I could use that instead of a red that matched, so I think I’m golden!!!

Am I the first to add a comment? This is regarding the lipstick. I think the lipstick works BUT. At first I thought it was too much. Then I looked just at the lipstick and thought…it’s pretty good. Here is the reservation: I think the hair coloring is throwing me off. The lipstick seems to work with your eyes! (good) and skin tone but defeats the hair tones. This is my amateur opinion. But I know you will have that lipstick despite the crazy price…but for full value…to really knock it out of the park the hair has to be in better harmony (???)
Most people quake at opening themselves up to this sort of critique, but I like it. I don’t think he red is my best look, but I wanted to be able to wear it.
But I agree absolutely about the hair, and I’m due for a change. What do you think I should do, go more of a mix of honey, and some lighter browns? What WOULD make this work do you think? It doesn’t need to be my best look, but I’d really like to pull it off without feeling horribly self-conscious of comical
