My internets hates me

It’s one of those technical questions that seem to have no answer. When our website was going down last week, I tried to log onto it from two different computers, and they eventually sent me all sorts of error messages. Since then, I get the same error message. Every other computer in my house will hit our website but those two. I’m assuming it’s some sort of cookie or something, though I’ve deleted cookies and still no success. I’ve tried dropping to a cmd prompt and typing in ipconfig /dnsflush or maybe it was flushdns. Whichever one, it didn’t work. I have a hunch that in a couple of weeks it will miraculously resolve as whatever stored page I have somewhere flushes out.

If any genius out there has some ideas for me, I’m all ears and fingers to try it. So it leaves me able to log in behind a proxy on the very same computer that won’t go straight in, but the proxies (because it has to hit a different address or there’s some java scripting) won’t let me play in comments. So until I can figure this out, ya’ll will have to amuse yourself in comments. Not that that’s terribly different from normal because much of the time other work really insists I do it instead of playing with all of you.

Hmm. It also seems to be giving my posts to me in html as well, which will make it even more interesting.  I may just use another computer and write my posts and upload it from there.  So for today, let’s talk about your favorite date fragrances.  I’m working on mine in my head.

Favorite fragrance for a first date?

Favorite fragrance for a hot, steamy first time naked date?

Favorite fragrance for a platonic date that says “not yet and maybe not ever”?

Favorite fragrance for a young girl to wear on a date (under 18)

Favorite fragrance for a young woman to wear on a date (18-25)

Favorite fragrance for a man to wear on a date (18-30)?

Favorite fragrance for a man to wear on a date (30 and up)?

Feel free to make up some categories, and I’ll include a bunch of these in a future post!

  • Madea says:

    First date?

Habanita–it’s inviting but not overtly sexual. Also, if he can’t hack something relatively easy like ‘Habanita’ the really outre stuff might give him a heart attack.

    Naked first date?

Tabu–on me, it’s a warm, resinous skin scent.

    Platonic date?

Florida Water–it’s redolent of cloves, warm but not sexual

    Under 18?

Eyptian Musk from a street vendor

    Women 18-25?

Arpege, vintage perfume strength–show him what he’s dealing with.

    Men 18-30

Sun by Madini–Fresh, sweet lavendar and ceder, with herbs and green notes

    Men over 30?

Something a little adventurous–one of the benefits of age is being a mite eccentric, right?:d

  • donanicola says:

EEEEK! This is so funny – I had a first date Sunday afternoon/evening and thought about Attrape Coeur then decided I didn’t want to translate when asked what I was wearing – seemed presumptous so I wore Bulgari Black hahhhaaaa. And it went down very well………I’m thinking Jubilation 25 or vintage Femme for the next one. I’d love him to wear Invasion Barbare (oh dear these names). We are both over forty.

    • Joe says:

Oooh, Invasion Barbare is a good one. Like Angela on NST said: I’d follow anyone around all day (or night!) if they were wearing that.

  • mariekel says:

Favorite fragrance for a first date?

My signature fragrance, Montale White Aoud. Memorable, classy, unusual and hot as hell.

Favorite fragrance for a hot, steamy first time naked date?

    Delrae Amoureuse. Sparingly.

Favorite fragrance for a platonic date that says “not yet and maybe not ever”?

PG Querelle. This says “I am as sharp as Katherine Hepburn’s cheekbones, unconventional, and likely to shoot you withering glances if you say something stupid.” Alternatively, Osmanthe Yunnan. Lovely, refined and utterly unsexy.

Favorite fragrance for a young girl to wear on a date (under 18)

Tatiana or the old formulation of Lauren, since that is what I wore at that age. Well, that and Rive Gauche. but then, I was born 30.

Favorite fragrance for a young woman to wear on a date (18-25)

Miller Harris Jasmin Vert or Rose en Noir.

Favorite fragrance for a man to wear on a date (18-30)?

    soap and shampoo. Mmmmmm….fresh…

Favorite fragrance for a man to wear on a date (30 and up)?

Hermes Bel-Ami or Serge Lutens Un Bois Sepia.

  • AnnieA says:

Hmm, do people wear perfume to bed then? When not sleeping, I mean. It was my understanding that, er, tasting perfume on skin isn’t very enjoyable, so that one would have to apply a scent where one *didn’t* want to be kissed.

    I did notice there’s a blushing emoticon…

  • Disteza says:

You can be married and still date–there’s nothing wrong with a little wooing of the SO! That being said, here’s my picks:

Favorite fragrance for a first date–Spiriteuse Double Vanille layered with some Coze. That’s right–lean in closer….

Favorite fragrance for a hot, steamy first time naked date–By Killian Pure Oud. That stuff is dangerous to wear near me.

Favorite fragrance for a platonic date that says “not yet and maybe not ever”?–MetB Quiet Morning. I may smell pretty, but I’m too zen for the likes of you.

Favorite fragrance for a young girl to wear on a date (under 18)–Memoire Liquide Nymphea. Embrace your inner Lolita, dahlings.

Favorite fragrance for a young woman to wear on a date (18-25)–This one may depend on the type of person you’re trying to snag, but it would be hard to go awry with PdE Cuir Ottoman or Guerlain’s Cuir Beluga.

Favorite fragrance for a man to wear on a date (I’m combining the ages)–Pure Oud (again, I know, it’s like I’m obsessed), AG Duel, Cartier 13th hour (I won’t attempt the French spelling), Black Tourmaline, and Cumming.

Personal category: favorite fragrance to wear out to eat–This may seem odd, but if you’re a fan of the skankier ‘fumes, you may well be aware that there are some scents that simply do not go with food. Here’s a couple that won’t put you off your pate: L’A Tea for Two, SL 5 o’clock Au Gingimbre, Iris Ganache, PdG Un Crime Exotique, and Vero Kern Kiki.

  • maggiecat says:

I’m recently married, so I’ll have to ponder this a bit.

First date: Cnanel Eau Premiere (it used to be Allure for me, until Eau Premiere came out)
First hot date: Used to be Lovely or Allure Sensuelle, now for my “cozy evening at home that will likely get more interesting” it’s often Vanille Sauvage de Madagascar. Or something equally yummy. Also Bois des Iles, since DH is fond of sandalwood.
Platonic date: Eaux de cologne work well here, and “clean” scents
    On him: Anything Hermes!
For a young girl: Hanae Mori has some lovely scents. Ralph Lauren Blue if she likes fresh notes over florals
For the more mature: Can’t go wrong with a Chanel…any Chanel.
For either: Stella or Stella Nude
On my own: Philosophy Inner Grace, assorted eaux de cologne, Body Shop’s Moroccan Rose

These are fun to read – and hope the computer gremlins soon cease to haunt you!

  • janh says:

Its funny, I love perfume and a nice-smelling man, but my first date with the loml–neither one of us wore perfume and it was the hottest ever.

    • Musette says:

The smell of Man (the ‘right’ man, I mean)…..ooooh, baby!

      There was this……oh, never mind…

      xo >-)

  • Nava says:

Geez, haven’t been on a first date in ages!

It’s funny that you posted this today because I found out yesterday that the 18 year old daughter of a friend now has her first serious boyfriend. He’s 21 and a film/philosophy major in school.

I’ll have to ask her these questions as I am not, at this time, qualified to answer them! :d

  • Shelley says:

Okay, I’m going to propose some other categories. We’re awfully dating heavy here. Not that there’s anything wrong with dating… ;;)

    * Cozy night at home with familiar and beloved companion

    * OMG we have a night out let’s blend the best of first naked date AND I know you so much better than that

    * Alone, happily so, exploring and taking in the world

    * You WISH you were dating me

Potential candidates for each category (though you know I could yammer about each):
    * PG L’Ombre Fauve
    * Magie Noire
    * Heeley Sel Marin
    * Amouage Gold

  • Rappleyea says:

I haven’t had a date since the first time Mitsouko was reformulated! :((

  • Tiara says:

Poor Patty….hope the issue is resolved QUICKLY!

Since I didn’t wear perfume when dating and only got into perfume about 4+ years ago, I have no idea how to answer these questions! We just recently celebrated our 34th anniversary and his idea of a great perfume is usually something with vanilla. Or perhaps along the lines of the old Johnson’s Baby Magic–he was a sucker for that when our boys were little.

I am especially interested in the answers for the under 18 girls since I only have sons. For her birthday last year, I gave my niece the Crescent Row sampler and she loved it. Her friends all thought it was fun to try all three and she’s already told me she can’t wait to see what I come up with this year. Was thinking a bunch of different samples so this poll will be most helpful!

  • Fernando says:

Dates? Yuck! I was done with those 32 years ago, and good riddance. Being married is pretty close to heaven on earth.

  • Marsi says:

    First date: NR for Her.

Naked date: Whatever I’d worn previously and gotten a response to.

Platonic date: Shalimar, and I’m not sure if it’s because it smells so divine to me or because it might invoke thoughts of Grandma in him (ergo, hands off, buster!).

Under-18 woman’s first date: Bal a Versailles, only because that’s what I was wearing at that age. Being a teenager is NO excuse to smell like a piece of candy. (Take that, Aqualina!)

18-25 young woman: Coco, Aromatics Elixir, L’Heure Bleu … something old school to make her smell more sophisticated than her peers.

Men: Ambre Sultan, at every age. Nom nom nom!

    • Rappleyea says:

“Being a teenager is NO excuse to smell like a piece of candy.”

      Good for you Marsi! (*)

      • mals86 says:

        Preach it, sister.

      • carter says:

You betcha! My first perfume as a teen was Jolie Madame and let me tell you, I had the hottest guy in my high school as my boyfriend when I was just a sophomore and he was a senior, and I swear that JM had more than a little bit to do with it.

In my early-20s I wore Tea Rose extrait (yes, extrait) and never in my life have I had more men crawling at my feet, panting. I was literally chased down the street — chased down the street! — because of that perfume, and the guy I was dating at the time was like one of Pavlov’s dogs every time he smelled it.

So based on my personal experience of fumes for the younger set, I say go sophisticated, go sexy, and forget the tutti-fruity, cake and laundry crap.

        • carter says:

Oh, and that hot high school boyfriend (think Jon Hamm with auburn hair and green and gold eyes) He wore nothing but soap and cedar. His family had a huge cedar closet and his winter shirts and sweaters were stored there and in the fall I just wanted to crawl into his pocket and live there forever.

    • Ari says:

It’s always fun when I tell girls my age that I wear Coco. “You mean Coco Mademoiselle, right?” Noo…

  • March says:

Wow, thinking about this has, in fact, made my 20+ years of marriage just that much more appealing. I confine my opposite-sex adventures these days to being hit on by inebriated men at parties.

    • Ari says:

March, these are also my opposite-sex adventures. But without the comfort of knowing you have a 20+ year marriage waiting when you go home 🙁

    • Lee says:

Like you March, am relieved that I don’t have to date. Sheesh. I wouldn’t know how or where to start.

      • March says:

Well, don’t start with the inebriated men at parties. They’re mostly married, anyway.

        • Musette says:

But as long as it’s just ‘giggle and wink’ hitting-on I think it’s kinda nice. C’mon – nobody wants ONLY to flirt with the one they love. A coquettish glance or some casual, flirty remark can be sparkifyin’! It’s what you do with those sparks that makes a difference.

I like watching my friends look at El O and go ……..:-? . He cleans up kinda nice for a big ol’ biker and he can be extremely charming when he chooses.

But I’m not letting him anywhere near my li’l bit o’ Habit Rouge.

          xo >-)

        • Lee says:

I simply love to flirt. Scoot on over M and let’s bat eyelids at each other.

  • Aidan says:

“Favorite fragrance for a first date?”

Something subtle and oriental – Penhaglion’s Elixir is just about right. If I’m spending other people’s money in imagination land, Kilian’s Pure Oud or Clive Christian X For Men.

“Favorite fragrance for a hot, steamy first time naked date?”

On a date of this variety I once wore Comme des Garcons Eau de Parfum layered with an Arabic oud-rose oil. I thought it might be a little much, but my focus group of one said “Mmm, spicy!”

“Favorite fragrance for a platonic date that says “not yet and maybe not ever”?

If it’s the friend zone and I’m genuinely sorry – En Passant, all tears and flowers in a spritz. If it’s bye, never is too soon – Stephen Jones; cool, sophisticated, dry, and a little remote.

“Favorite fragrance for a “hey, let’s give this another try” date?”

Something warm and comforting. I’m thinking Caron’s Poivre ( sexy, but still bakes you an apple pie ).

I had fun with this one. 🙂

  • Jared says:

My first date fragrance is, by default, Mitsouko, especially if there’s wine involved. As for that first naked date, maybe something delightful in rubber like Black? (unless of course the sheets are already made of rubber :-ss) I suppose when it comes to dates, I resort to the classics. For ladies, and my expereince is limited here, but I’d still like smelling No. 5 coming my way over the dinner table. Probably any of those Exclusifs will do, but no Beige, please. Guys seem to get stuck in “woody” territory, but still, Rose 31 would do nicely for a young man. As for myself, being 30, I guess I get the best of both worlds. Those “older genteleman” fragrances scare the hell out of me, and I don’t think I’d ever want to cross into that genre. That being said, Habit Rouge? If it must be so, I’d go with that. Although here I am spouting off the classic Guerlains and Chanels.

    • Lee says:

Rubber sheets? you kinky so and so!:x

      • Jared says:

I was surprised to find some on a bed once. They’re out there.

        • March says:

It doesn’t sound cosy. OTOH maybe the hose-down aspect comes in handy … 😕

If I ever climbed into bed and discovered the guy had satin sheets I’d bust out laughing. Then I’d put my clothes back on and leave.

          • Lee says:

Remind me to bin my satin and rubber sheets.

Fwiw, we’re only Egyptian cotton in this house.

          • maidenbliss says:

Wish they made an Egyptian perfume to match my Egyptian sheets.:((
I remember when rubbers were watcha wore for safe sex:d

          • March says:

            How about that Papyrus thingy?

As an Egyptian perfume, not a safe-sex adjunct.

          • maidenbliss says:

lol – safe-sex adjunct. I’ll check out the Papyrus thingy. Wish you could relate the story
that isn’t fit for us little people here. The one concerning zee chef-i want to hear about
            it:(( it sounds so juicy:x

          • Shelley says:

Ah, an Egyptian jingoist on the sheet issue?

          • maidenbliss says:

            :d/

          • carter says:

The round bed is usually the tip-off.

          • Flora says:

Saw one once – unfortunately I was not an invitee at the time. :d

          • Musette says:

I once dated a guy who had this gorgeous apt – his second bathroom had a clawfoot tub filled with silk pillows…

            xo >-)

          • mary says:

I also saw a round bed once– at a party in SF– the bed was made up with a tiger striped fake fur spread and pillows, and there was a video cam trained on it–one of my “kinda get the feeling we’re not in Kansas” moments, back in the day . . .:)>-

          • Lee says:

Your experiences are all a bit rich for my blood, though I could tell you about the party I attended as a postgrad student where one of my professors descended the stairs in nipple clamps and some restraint wear.

I finished my drink quickly. And left, may I add.

    • Ari says:

I said Black too! No 5 is a great date perfume- I once walked around a mall with No 5 on one wrist and Coco Mademoiselle on the other and asked a bunch of guys which one they preferred, and the vast majority said No 5.

    • Joe says:

Jared: I remember a comment of yours awhile back where you said your policy about Mitsouko was something like, “Dating me = Smelling this.”

It’s a good litmus test!! Kind of like asking, “What’s the last book you read?” (or “Your favorite book?”) and getting a reply of :-\” or crickets. Chances for a second date are slim. b-(

  • cinnamon says:

Good wishes on the computer stuff. Might be a silly question, but have you turned them all the way off recently rather than just logging off?

Favorite fragrance for a first date?
    **Prob Mitsouko perfume

Favorite fragrance for a hot, steamy first time naked date?
**Tiny bit of TF Scent behind the knees

Favorite fragrance for a platonic date that says “not yet and maybe not ever”?
    **Le Labo Patchouli 24

Favorite fragrance for a young girl to wear on a date (under 18)
**If she’s not a perfumista, Miss Dior Cherie
**If she is a perfumista, L’Artisan Vanilia

Favorite fragrance for a young woman to wear on a date (18-25)
    **Guerlain Vol de Nuit

Favorite fragrance for a man to wear on a date (18-30)?
**Dior Eau Sauvage or Dior Homme

Favorite fragrance for a man to wear on a date (30 and up)?
**Tauer Lonestar Memories, Chanel Pour Monsieur, SMN Patchouli

  • carter says:

    Ha Ha Ha :-j

    • Marsha says:

C’mon Carter – give up your secret Chanel!:-$

      • carter says:

Nevah! I keep hoping that one day some clueless eBay seller will put it up with a BIN price of $20. Unfortunately, even the $75 offerings are as scarce as hen’s teeth — I bet I haven’t seen it listed at all in the past three years or so — but hey, it could happen [-o<

        • carter says:

But the laughter up there in my initial comment was because I have no point of reference (read: I can’t remember) with which to frame a response. I don’t know where my keys are at the moment. Asking me to remember dating stuff is like asking me to remember being born.

  • Joe says:

Sorry about the computer problems. Hmm. Maybe clear cookies and history again and then reboot the things twice? I’m just guessing here.

As for the poll… am I allowed to borrow the “Kill.Me.Now.” phrase?

How about best fragrance for a “40-something-ish-guy-who-has-turned-into-a-cat-lady-before-his-time-but-has-plenty-o’-perfumes-to-keep-him-warm-at-night” — for going on a date with the Dell Inspiron on a blogsurfing adventure?

Hey, at least I hardly ever make myself scrunch up my own nose.

    • Lee says:

I’m sure there’s plenty of folks who’d love the chance to scrunch up their nose in your company – in a charming way, of course. Just they ain’t stumbled your way recently, the fools!

    • Flora says:

Joe, are you living MY life now?? :d

      • Musette says:

Okay, you two. Cut it out.

You’re both fabulous. You aren’t dating because you aren’t crazy.

        xo >-)

        • Joe says:

          Oh, I’m crazy, baby. 8-}

Just not crazy enough to want to deal with that particular piranha tank. b-(

  • Flora says:

What ees thees “date” you speak of? Oh, wait, now I remember what that was like now…:((

First date: Women: Ines de la Fressange, 1999 version. Men: John Varvatos Artisan

First hot naked date: Women: Too many possibilities to list and don’t even get me started on vintage, but let’s go with Caron Parfum Sacre’, especially if it’s really serious. Men: Caron Yatagan – trust me, it works. If that’s too much to handle, Montale Greyland is infallible in that department.

Platonic date: Miss Balmain, current formula, will KEEP it platonic, unless your date has a schoolmarm fetish. If you lean more toward the “maybe I will” side, go with DSH Perfumes Quinacridone Violet, abstract, disturbing and strangely compelling.

Young girl’s first date perfume: Creed Spring Flower

Young woman 18-30: She could get away with just about any popular mainstream perfume, but let’s put her in something interesting and unexpected yet inexpensive like Gres Cabaret.

Woman over 30: Annick Goutal Un Matin d’Orage, or Jean-Louis Scherrer original fragrance if she is not a white flower person.

    Man 18-30: John Varvatos Vintage

Man over 30: Tauer Perfumes L’Air du Desert Marocain, mostly so I can sniff it.

    Now my own made-up category:

Woman over 40 who has not been on a real date since the Clinton years and who wants to get lucky sooner rather than later: Lucien Lelong pour Femme :d

    • Ari says:

Don’t worry Flora! No dating sounds all-too-familiar to me too, and I am 18! I don’t think dating really even exists anymore, it’s like unicorns and Hogwarts. As my friends and I say, hanging out sober is the new dating. Nevertheless…

Favorite fragrance for a first date?
Always, always Lolita Lempicka- it’s sweet, guys seem to respond to it well.
Favorite fragrance for a hot, steamy first time naked date?
Oh goodness! Well I just got Bvlgari Black yesterday and adore it, so I’m gonna go with that. It subtly hints “I keep leather whips in the closet”, lol!
Favorite fragrance for a platonic date that says “not yet and maybe not ever”?
L’Heure Bleue EDT! I love it, but nobody else does!
Favorite fragrance for a young girl to wear on a date (under 18)
28 La Pausa. Beautiful, delicate, miles away from her Pink Sugar saturated high school
Favorite fragrance for a young woman to wear on a date (18-25)
Kenzo Amour, for the cuddly factor.
Favorite fragrance for a man to wear on a date (18-30)?
If I found a guy who wore Musc Ravageur (or any Malle, really), I would NEVER let him go.
Favorite fragrance for a man to wear on a date (30 and up)?
I should probably be staying away from these men, lol!

      • dea says:

Wow. Ari’s comment was really educational *and* adorable!
and “hanging out sober” is hilarious!

        • Ari says:

Thank you dea!! 😡 Unfortunately it is more hilarious in theory than in practice 🙁

          • Aparatchick says:

            Unicorns and Hogwarts. =))

So we’ve established that “dates” are few and far between whether you’re 18 like Ari or 52 like me. However, once in a blue moon I try to convince Mr. Aparatchick to take me out to dinner to a place without $2, $4, $6, and $8 specials. [-o< My go-to fragrance at those times is PdN's Sacrebleu.

          • Ari says:

AHA, so there is a Mr. Aparatchick! In that case I don’t think you need to stress much about dates, my dear! That is a lovely date night choice. I love, love my big brassy orientals, but am always afraid of scaring those skittish college boys off… They seem to prefer “eau de shampoo” or some silliness like that.

          • Musette says:

hate to sound all ‘old lady’ on you but you’ll be stunned, as you get older, just how much more interesting and hilarious people can be when they’re not drunk.

            Sexy,too!

            xo >-)

          • Ari says:

Oh no Musette!! I think there is almost nothing more unsexy than drunk people… the sloppiness, the holding of the hair back, etc. I only meant to lament the fact that “dates” seem to have been replaced by much more casual hanging out/hooking up. It makes it much harder to know where you stand! We are both on the same page… the “old lady” page apparently…

          • Musette says:

            ^:)^

            xoxox >-)

      • Flora says:

LOL, I like that definition of dating – that’s a great list!!! 🙂

        • Ari says:

Thank you Flora!! You picked some great ones- I just tried Parfum Sacre and liked it a lot. Sadly I’ve never gotten to try this Lelong pour femme that’s driving you and Mals wild!

      • mary says:

        I’m also lovin’ on the LHB edt . . . it’s yummy!:)>-

    • mals86 says:

LELONG POUR FEMME! Just bought a bottle to split with a coupla friends. I blame you.

I admit that it seems less “hawt and sexxxy” to me than really, really feminine. Which can, of course, be sexy.

      • Flora says:

C – Happy to take the blame for that one, I am nothing if not a Lelong evangelist. And since you love it too, it’s obviously not for just older ladies like moi. :d

        • Musette says:

That stuff drives men 8-} (I think this is the moticon I’m looking for – hope so)….anyway, that thing is da bomb!

So is Ines (new version) – again, we’re talking what GUYS like.

If I had my way (and dating were an option), I would date wearing a breastplate, vintage Mitsouko ….and a titanium sword.

          Just sayin’
