Opus Oils M’Eau Joe No 3

It’s not much of a secret that I am a fan of Opus Oils. Several of their scents are in rotation in my collection and I adore their richness and beauty.

On October 3rd of this year they’re debuting their “Hollywood Whiskey Fragrance” which was “inspired by Rock ‘n Roll, the Blues and Perfume” (samples are available now on their site). The project was a collaboration of writer Michelle Krell Kydd and perfumer Kedra Hart (the duo responsible for Eau Pair Tingle) and meant to somewhat approximate a “sipping whiskey”.

It does have smell of some of the slightly burnt, woody facet that is a big part of the taste of fine whiskey. Listed in the base notes is tobacco, which is also something I taste in whiskey. I get the tobacco all the way through: rich. sweet and uncured. The saffron softens it while the slightly boozy aspects along with the honey and bare touch of smoky, bitter chocolate adds a deliciously playful note.

My exposure to rock and roll and clubs and musicians is of course nil at this point. But what this scent reminds me of is vintage Tabac Blond. Not the sad, watered-down thing that’s being pedaled these days, but the rich and gorgeous one that I used to love so. It’s not an exact copy, mind you. It’s its own triumph. But I think it’s in the same vein, and it’s so beautifully done and so lovely that the house of Caron should be sitting in the corner nervously lighting up another gauloise..

They call it “Unisexy” I can’t put it any better..

Wow, anything that approaches the HG of HGs, vintage Tabac Blond, is worth sniffing!

  • Musette says:

sippin’ whiskey is what keeps me out of the pokey! This sounds wonderful, like “The Most Interesting Man in the World” drinking whiskey rather than XX.

I’ve never tried the Opus oils. I’m afraid to try them because I am saving my pennies for Amouage Lyric and gunning for the 3.4 ounce because I adore it so.

I love Opus Oils. they are the Cool Kids of niche to me.

Unisexy, I love it! I have been getting into the more recent things from Kedra, she’s getting more and more interesting to me. Those two strawberry/green and cream things she recently did were so good too. She has a way of incorporating that charming edge of naughtiness.

Oh, now this sounds wonderful. My drink of choice (when I drink, that is) is bourbon and I adore the scent of the cork and the aroma that greets me when I tip my glass so a perfume in homage to that is a good thing! And the hat tip to Jim Morrison, a shall we say, AVID whisky drinker, makes it even more irresistible, Doors fan that I am. At least, I am assuming that the ‘M’eau Joe’ is referencing Morrison’s ‘alter ego’ ‘Mr Mojo Risin’ (which is an anagram of his name) . Thank you for the heads up, Tom!

I didn’t know that about the Jim Morrison anagram; how cool! The things I learn from the Posse are endless 🙂
