Week End by Parfums de Nicolaï 2009

Helloooooooo Posseeeee! Portia from Australian Perfume Junkies with a new to me favourite that I grabbed in a collectors clear out. We are in Summer down under but the weather really can’t decide what it wants to do. Yesterday was 36 degrees celcius (97F)in Sydney and today around the 19 mark (66F) and rainy. So choosing a fragrance that lasts more than five hours can be a chancy thing, unless you find something that changes its whole personality through the lifespan of the scent like Week End.

Week End by Parfums de Nicolaï 2009

Fragrantica gives these featured accords:
Top: Peppermint, sweet basil, tarragon
Heart: Lily of the valley, jasmine, ylang-ylang, galbanum, green apple, cardamom, helional & calone molecules
Base: Leather, cedar, white musk

Week End’s tart green opening is herbal and fun, fresh without being generic and clean without a hint of laundry. Week-End seems the perfect name for this lovely frolic through a kitchen garden in cool sunlight, I can even imagine hordes of little insects being caught in the light and looking for all the world like fairies sparkling. Just the name evokes lazy sun filled afternoons laughing with friends around a table groaning under the weight of food, wines, china, crystal and elbows. Even through the heart when the bouquet arrives Week End is tempered by green-ness though it is a sweeter, softer and less twangy green. A green that has been relaxed considerably by lilyOTV/jasmine/ylang and a slight seaside breeze, not fishy but ever so subtly marine.

There is a cool resinous wash that flows through during this lovely heart, it dances through and around the flowers and leads us down the meandering garden path to meet a romantic tryst dressed in a very old, well loved leather jacket.

Week-End is excellent, it goes from cool, to resinous/salty/floral and then musky leather. There is no appreciable warming of the fragrance through its life but the mood does change significantly. From snappy green to pretty beach house bouquet and then into lived in lover. A great ride especially good for changeable days.

If you want more frag chatter then come on over to Australian Perfume Junkies, we’d love to see you there too. Before you jump over there though, join the conversation here. I love to read what you think on this or any frag related subject.

Have you tried Week End? What were your thoughts? Would you wear Week End only on the week-End? My answer is no, I would wear it anytime.
See you soon,
Portia xx

  • The original limited edition version of “Weekend a Deauville” was my HG but the new Week-end is a totally different fragrance. Very sad— I loved the floral warmth of the first.

I haven’t found “my” PdN yet, but perhaps I should give this a try. If for no other reason than our weather here: high of 77 F on Wednesday; “high” of 35 on Thursday (and that was early morning) and freezing rain and sleet. High was 28 today, and the ice storm has schools and businesses closed. I need something that can roll with the changes!

    • Portia says:

      Hey there MaggieCat,
You sound like a cooler version of Sydney right now. Maybe Week End could be the one?
I love changeable weather as long as I have clothing options where I am.

I was smiling at the visual of the sunny summer table in the garden with the dog and the elbows. Weekend sounds delish! PdN isn’t a house that usually works for me,alas. Something in the base. But you make this sound so lovely…. I’ll try again!!!xoxo A

    • Portia says:

      Heya Musette,
I love the moment in a party when everyone relaxes enough to put their elbows down and get really involved in the conversation or game. It’s the moment when I can exhale and know that the night is a success, and it doesn’t always happen.
If you have trouble with the PdN base then this is probably not going to be a winner for you either Musette.
I hope your back is getting better.

I’m all for the Tryst – looks like my husband did when we met 20+ years ago! ;-)!

    • Portia says:

Yummy, your husband was a hottie then. MMMMM This boy is third generation Bollywood Royalty. I think he is charming and not too handsome. You are a lucky girl.

I think this is the same scent as Weekend a Deauville but they had to change the name for some reason. Anyway, I have Weekend and it’s a great perfume. Perfect for those changeable spring and summer days. I also love this line because they have great scents and good prices.

    • Portia says:

      Hey Poodle,
I wonder how someone can offer this outstanding product so reasonably? It always takes me by surprise how affordable this range is. It’s a bit like the original L’Artisan line. Great frags well priced. I am a fan of both of the lines.

  • Ann says:

Howdy, dear Portia! When I first saw this, I thought of Week-end a Deauville as well, as did Mals. I might have a sample of that around somewhere. At any rate, you make it sound wonderful. I do love a scent that takes you on an ever-changing trip, so sign me up — thanks!

    • Portia says:

YAY!! Nice to see you Ann.
I think this is the reform. Do go check out your sample and tell me how you liked it. It feelsa like it could very easily become a Go-To frag.

I’m with FeralJasmine as I don’t know very much about this line. I used your link to Parfum1 and was surprised by the number of fragrances they had. I’ll have to explore more some time. Thanks for your review!

    • Portia says:

      Hi there Sandy,
I also love that they do 30ml bottles that are reasonable priced. For the price of a regular niche perfume nowadays you can grab 4 x 30ml Parfum de Nicolai. That is a good deal.

  • FeralJasmine says:

I’m surprisingly unacquainted with this house. This may be a pleasant place to start expanding my knowledge of it.

    • Portia says:

      Hey there FeralJasmine,
They have some lovely fragrances, Patricia de Nicolai is very subtle and does soft, intimate elegance extremely well. You won’t shout but you will purr in her fragrances.

Haven’t tried this – is it a version of Week-end a Deauville? I remember that name.

    Love my leather jacket. 🙂

    • Portia says:

      Hey there Malsnano86,
My bottle is without Deauville and I think (maybe) that’s how you tell the difference between old & new. Maybe the 1oz only had room for Week End. The dry down is so pretty, I’m wearing it now and spritzed about 4 hours ago and the resinous green is weaving enchantingly through the leather and musk.
I think you might like this, very pretty and extremely wearable.
