It has rained – and rained HARD – for the past week.  In between the torrential downpours the sun pops out and temps soar into the mid 90s, causing plants to leap up with Jurassic aplomb.   The overnight rains, with stunning lightning and thunder (that terrify the dog) create a fantasyworld of fog and mist for my 6a wake up.  I live in the middle of nowhere, at the Back of Beyond, East of the Sun and West of the Moon.  No real traffic, no ‘civilization’ noise, not even ‘in town’ (3p on a Tuesday you can fire an ICBM down the main street and not hit a soul).  Nature is very much right. in. my. face.  And the whole world around me is greener and wetter than it has any right to be in August.  Everywhere I look there are puddles and ponds and dripping treelines and dripping bushes and ferns and grey and Green.  Green & black hummingbirds flit amongst my sodden plum bushes, guarding their food sources.   The sun is currently behind the next incoming rain cloud – and now is a perfect time to talk about Bracken Man.

Bracken Man (named in honor of Christopher Chong’s beloved dog) is a fascinating aromatic fougere that I shouldn’t like because it’s woody, green, lemony-clove-y.  But I do.  Because it’s woody, green, lemony-clove-y done very, very well.    Let’s start with the lemony-clove-y part:  no one could’ve told me that I would like those two notes together – then again, I didn’t think lemon and dark chocolate were an appropriate pairing, either.  Until I tried it. (thanks, J, for sending me that chocolate bar all those years ago!).    Luckily I didn’t have the notes so I was unable to form an opinion prior to spritzing.  First spritz, the citrus & woods leap out, like the sun…and I was all ‘oh, okay.  It’s woody’.  Then before I can even get that opinion formed in my head there’s a hint of clove, patchouli & a hint of  cypress (which, to my nose, always has that chiaroscuro sunny/sour smell) – not enough to overwhelm the citrus, just enough to tip it a little off-balance, to keep it from becoming a run-of-the-mill masculine fougere.   About 10 minutes into the spritz, the clove does a little tippy tap dance on my skin…juuust a leeetle.  Clove is one of those OMG notes – there are a couple of scents unabashedly clove (L’Origan, I’m looking at you, girl) but unless it’s paired deftly it can be way overwhelming, like getting stuck in the oven with the ham.   This is not that.  You have to get really close in, get your nose way up in there, to identify the clove note.  Without it, though, it wouldn’t be nearly as interesting a scent.

It’s labeled ‘Man’ but it’s soft and elegant enough that I don’t feel like I’m wearing my dad’s Polo (if you came of age in the 80s you know whereof I speak – omg.  SO MUCH POLO!)  This can be worn by anyone – and beautifully so.  I wore it when I went out yesterday and all 3 places I visited, people asked ‘wow.  you smell GREAT! what are you wearing?’

I was not expecting to like it as much as I do, since I’m not a huge fan of fougeres in general.  But I really, really LIKE this!  And I want to share with you, to see if you like it, too!  If you love fougere, drop me a comment telling me your faves.  If you dislove fourgere :-D, drop me a comment telling me your least-faves.  I’ll pull two commenters for the two Amouages carded samples that were sent to me.

I’m intrigued! I don’t like clove or fougeres, but I really want to try this.

Would love to try this! Thanks so much for the draw (I’m in the US). I am a big fougere fan, and having a bit of a “fougere-Renaissance” as the summer winds down and I gear up to waft delightful coumarinic clouds in the fall. Favorites include Invasion Barbare, Rive Gauche PH (in each, I love the fougere accord crossed with spice–cardamom and anise, respectively–and like the sound of clove in this), Or Black (which smells to me like a metrosexual-Le Male fougere mixed with the nice leather bits of Derby), Kouros, Jicky, and I love the “fougere-ish” accents to the big old Oriental Amber that is Chergui–the aromatics and hay in that scent are what make it a winner for me, and it definitely feels like a “genre crossover” scent. Thanks again!

  • Dear PERFUME POSSE <3 first let me start by telling I love to read what you write the way you manage to put it all in perspective, really beautifully written! but yes, I like the smell of this beautiful perfume. but my favorite scent is "Zarko PERFUME" scents I'm not so crazy about is "Elizabeth Taylor Diamonds and Rubies & Elizabeth Arden Red Door & DKNY Be Delicious" but I want with all my heart to win this beautiful fragrance from you <3 fight hugs & thoughts from RIBE in Denmark <3

Sounds great and I love the description of your Jurassic landscape too. Hummingbirds! I’m in the UK so don’t enter me for the draw.

  • Neva says:

I’m not the fougere type..the recent disappointment was Chanel’s Boy. It was beautifully citrusy and green at the beginning, but it turned into a bitter lavender on my skin. Such a shame. On the other hand, I love Amouage and there’s hardly something I did not like so far, so maybe…
    Thanks for the giveaway!

  • Pam says:

Love fougeres! Jicky, yes! But many masculines. Le Troisieme Homme, Azzaro, Caron Pour un Homme. I would love to try this. And it is raining here too. Part of that storm.

  • Grizzlesnort says:

Please enter me in your draw! (It’s the cloves and cypress I’m really after, heh, heh.) Also, I have never tried Amouage before and there does seem to be a lot of fuss made here and elsewhere about their scents and about their off-putting costs. Intrigued.

  • Maureen says:

I like some fougeres, but rarely wear them because I’m such a girl, I love lemon anything, so I would love to try this and expand my horizons. Thank you.

  • AnnieA says:

Fougeres = Dudes so I have never tried them. However I would love to love an Amouage.

  • Queen Cupcake says:

I’m not too familiar, personally, with fougeres but I did score some vintage Jicky (if that counts) a few years ago, and I like that a lot. I wish that my husband liked wearing scent so that between us, there would be more “real estate” to try these things out.

  • Claudia S says:

I don’t think I’ve tried a fougere fragrance yet. But your review made me want to get some clove gum! Thanks!

  • HeidiC says:

Oh my god — SO MUCH POLO. And Drakkar Noir — remember that? They were the Axe body sprays of the ’80s. Why can’t teen guys find better scents to cover up their pubescent stank? I’m generally not a huge fan of fougeres — would Alfred Sung’s Paradise count as one? And yet I do like lavender in men’s scents and am sad you don’t see it so much anymore.

  • Nemo says:

I love woody, but don’t have much experience with fougeres. This one sounds like it might make a tasty cocktail, too! Thanks 🙂

  • Em says:

As a woman, I wear colognes sometimes, but I still haven’t tried a great many. I LOVE Le Male and Kouros, but strangely, I hate Polo. I do want to try this one because I love spicy lemon fragrances, like Voyage d’Hermes. They’re reminiscent of the mystery-brand fragrances sold in Istanbul, and they brings back good travel memories.

  • MikasMinion says:

I like fougeres but am rarely tempted to wear them. I can’t think of one in my collection, to be perfectly honest. I don’t even know if I have a sample. I used to love Aspen for men and I have always had a soft spot for Brut (don’t judge), but lavender is tough for me and usually a big part of the genre.
I admit to wanting to try all the Amouages because I always end up liking the least likely of them, but in this case it’s partially because that bottle is gorgeous and I want it.

  • Rina says:

Polo gives me High School PTSD! Can’t smell it without thinking of What’s-His-Name, but Bracken sounds lovely!

  • Catherine says:

This sounds amazing!! I like fougeres, particularly aromatic fougeres of which this sounds a stunning example. Jicky is my favorite. Thanks for the giveaway!

  • LaDona says:

Glorious sounding! Ian an Oriental/incense/tobacco girl…but I want to try this!

  • Ellen M says:

I don’t have a favorite, but I am SO intrigued by this. I love clove, lemon, woods, and patchouli. I’m thinking this will be an awesome combination. My fingers are crossed. Thanks for the giveaway.
