Spring break: Scents for shoulder season

spring break
Happy April, dear Posse folks! Hope you are all doing well. The first of April just so happens to coincide with my son’s spring break so I will be bopping in and out of town this week since we have the week off. (Not to mention a heavy round of spring cleaning — ughh.) And it just occurred to me that it is prime shoulder season.

I realize that this time of year, although quite pleasant temp-wise currently at my location, may be a bit of a crapshoot elsewhere, as Mother Nature often isn’t done with her cold-weather shenanigans in many other parts of the country or the world. And truth be told, we’ve had a few weather shockers come hurtling out of left field in Aprils past, so nothing is guaranteed.

For me, I’m enjoying a range of scents leading up to this spring break, such as Arquiste’s Ella, Byredo’s La Tulipe and Chanel 1932 for the 70-ish days. And I’ve donned Amouage’s Lilac Love (adore its floral to cozy vibe) in late afternoon, or Tom Ford’s Orchid Soleil, heading into the cooler nights. And as always, I’m not quite ready to pack anything away just yet, because as mentioned above: Mother Nature.

So in this frequently fickle time of year, what scents are keeping you happy? Are any of you who get it, on spring break this week, or have you had it or are looking forward to it? With Easter fast approaching, it’s amazing how quickly the time goes by. Anyhoo, hope your April is off to a beautiful start!

Oh dear! When you said, ‘shoulder season,’ for some reason I thought of those blouses with the shoulder cut out. Not the actual travel shoulder season.

I still can’t bring myself to go Full Spring and I’m still trying to squeak out a few more wearings of cozy winter scents because once it gets warm here it stays that way for too long.

    • jen says:

oh, same here. We are still having morning fires in Phoenix and I would like it to stay that way. It wont.

Currently I´m rotating the bitter green Chanel Cristalle EDT + light and musky Marc Jacobs Daisy Dream for the office, and alternating it with Frederic Malle En Passant (watery lilac) and Byredo Inflorescence (uncomplicated, happy lily of the valley). Spring in full bloom!

hi, sweetie! enjoy that week off! It’s still cold and rainy here – I am working the heck out of my beloved Violets & Rainwater (Liz Zorn’s masterpiece); I would wear Iris 39 and Mythique as well, but it’s just too chilly for those two. For now…

    Hi Ann,
Today I’m wearing VC&A Bois d’Iris, yesterday it was Guerlain Terracotta Voile d’Ete. I’ve been doing a lot of green florals, too, like Chamade, Gucci Envy, Le Labo Iris 39, YSL Paris Jardins Romantiques, Kai oil, and Sonia Kashuk Pink Innocencia. Our Virginia weather was summer-like in February, and went backwards in March getting cooler. Now April is acting more appropriately spring-like. Snuck in some Chanel Sycomore edt on a cool day which smelled great.

Hi Ann, enjoy your spring break! After working in schools for many years, I still feel that freedom the first of April.
Funny how this has turned into a fan club for Seville l’Aube! I just doused myself in it last evening and it smells so, so good. I like iris this time of year, Chanel 19 and Silences, and “cooler” incense – Nu, Messe di Minuit. Things that have a bit of quirk – En Voyage Zelda and new to me Zoologist Civet. Our weather in the seven day forecast goes from a high chance of measurable snow and temps below freezing to the low 70s over the weekend so quirky seems to fit 🙂

Another vote for Seville A l’Aube! Also Acqua Allegoria Pamplelune, vintage Vent Vert, Hiram Green Dilettante, and Parfum d’Therese, all in rotation. If I’m feeling a bit more sultry, then Neela Vermeire’s Ashoka or Papillon’s Salome.

    Happy Spring, everyone!

The past few days have been the first days that feel like spring here, and I spotted crocuses yesterday! In spite of some raw winds the sun has been warm and I’ve gone off the deep end with spring scents. I’ve been bringing out Le Temps dune Fete, Promenade des Anglais, Hummingbird, En Passant, Philosykos, and Diorissimo (mostly worn from samples). Although today I’m wearing vanillin patchouli Cristina by Hilde Soliani, simply because I was missing it.
I still need to try Ella and Lilac Love, they sound stunning!

  • RoseMacaroon says:

I’ve really been enjoying Moccasin Flower by Living Libations, it seems perfect for this warm-with-cold wind time of year – freshly green in a vaguely foresty/herbaceous way, floral with jasmine, and lightweight-cozy with a citrusy amber. So far that’s been the best but on a more dressed up occasion I’m gonna go for SIP’s Magazine Street, which has a similar fresh/sparkly/lightweight down-filled composition, and also have their Pisces from the Zodiac series coming in, which I think will be perfect in a similar way with a juicy effervescent lime, sensuous jasmine, and esthetically perfect outdoorsy vibe from the Cedar – been a while since I wore it, so that’s what I’d expect going from memory.
These all sound so good! I’m really loving occasional lilacs, and have learned that I’m unilaterally smitten with l’APs, so must try the Seville a l’Aube some time soon.

Romanza…my new ‘puter wants to spell for me

I’m in Sacramento and I just did the perfume rotation, Amouages and half the Lutens in the drawers below the Captains bed and pulling out my lighter scents including some Allegorias. The Chanel Boy is nice right about now, and I’m enjoying the Masque Romania and my new and beloved Arboles, along with the Lutens’ citronier. We’re not entirely into summer though, so I do have a couple incenses handy and keeping Montale’s incense close still. I do two to three rotations a year (it’s like the closet and wardrobe clearing. I want to try the Seville–that sounds lovely.

  • Tara C says:

Another vote for Séville à l’Aube, as well as Chamade and Micallef Rose Extreme. I’m having fun sampling the Jo Malone hyacinth scent from the Bloomsbury collection too.

I too have been wearing Arquiste’s Ella and finding it perfect for the shoulder season in L.A. – for the first hour or so. And then it fades to a faint nothing. Such a drag, because that first hour just moves me. I wore Rive Gauche and Dioressence as a teenager and Ella has that vibe, until it doesn’t. So disappointing.

Other things I wear this time of year are Diptyque’s Essences Insensées (2015 version), which is primarily jasmine, and Seville a l`Aube by L`Artisan. The Diptyque because the jasmine are blooming here and that reminds me to pull it out, and Seville a l`Aube because I find the beeswax aspect too dusty in warmer months but the orange blossom and incense straddle the sunny days/cool nights of Spring and Fall with aplomb.
