Vintage Miss Dior by J Carles + P Vacher for DIOR 1947

Hi Posse, I can’t stop myself spritzing my Vintage Miss Dior. My current bottle is an Eau de Toilette and it is rapidly diminishing. Even from the very first moment that it swooshes out of the natural spray I am filled with deep swelling happiness. As soon as it’s on I smile and breathe in luxuriantly. Not sure if it smells so good because I love it to bits (I do) or if it’s got an added sparkle because this Vintage Miss Dior is decades old and will never be produced so perfectly ever again. Then I ask myself, “Does it really matter?” and I go back to smiling goofily and enjoying the lovely fragrant ride.

Vintage Miss Dior by DIOR

Fragrantica gives these featured accords:
Top: Aldehydes, gardenia, galbanum, clary sage, bergamot
Heart: Carnation, iris, orris root, jasmine, neroli, lily-of-the-valley, rose, narcissus
Base: Labdanum, leather, sandalwood, amber, patchouli, oakmoss, vetiver

So this bottle had definitely been through the wars before it came to me. Basically the lid has been melted at some point and doesn’t go back on properly. The label has been dirtied so much that you need to find the exact right light or you can’t read it. Only 50ml but the juice inside is perfect. Pristine!

Personally I can’t pick the notes out of Vintage Miss Dior. Part of me worries that if I spend too much time doing that then the trick will be revealed and I will lose interest in its magical wafts. so lets just say that I can smell oakmoss and a bunch of gorgeousness that makes me smile.

    Hello Portia!
I’m devoted to my vintage Miss Dior so I of course I loved reading this. And, yes, I also have my stockpile of vintage Miss Dior in different formulations, but my EDT in the houndstooth-era atomizer, just like yours, might be my favorite. Just the right combination of sillage, depth, and longevity. I wore Miss Dior yesterday. It always feels elegant and subtle, but with just the right amount of bossiness.

  • Ann says:

Howdy, Portia! What a treat to read this (a little late, sorry)! But I can see how this makes you so blissfully happy. Enjoy every spritz of it and create some wonderful memories with it. P.S. I would die to have that gorgeous urn-shaped Dior bottle as I do adore classical themes of all stripes.

    • Portia says:

      Hey Ann,
      Glad to see you.
They are remaking those urns. I saw them in Harrods last year and they look incredible. Not as expensive as you’d think either.

I have a gorgeous little bottle of the ’60s vintage Miss Dior, and I love it. LOVE. IT. The scent is so chic, with a subversive whiff of funk at its base. The current version is nowhere near it. I’m also a huge fan of vintage Diorella and Diorling — I keep buying decants of the Diorling because I can never find a bottle of it online that I can afford or that doesn’t seem suspicious.

    • Portia says:

      Hey HeidiC,
Yeah, I too am Diorling-less. I do have a small old Diorella parfum that gets an airing every so often. To be honest though when I’m going for the vintage DIOR box in the cupboard it’s usually for Miss Dior.

  • Musette says:

I have a vintage Miss Dior (and a more contemporary version) but I confess to it not being My Jam, preferring Diors ella & issimo. But that doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate its beauty – I do! Particularly the leetle vintage scrab I have.

That bottle cap makes me giggle with delight! I totally get it, in the way that only a perfumista can!

    • Portia says:

      Hey Musette,
Yeah the bottle cap is a mess. Kind of annoying too because it falls off if I look at it wrong but it’s so charismatic that I can’t throw it away either.

I love the vintage Miss Dior and have quite a bit of it. I do have a decant of the current version and have to dig it out and try it again.

    • Portia says:

      Heya Eldarwen22,
Yes, we who love the old Miss Dior tend to stockpile it. I have an embarrassment of riches here.

  • Ren says:

I have a decant of the modern Miss Dior, and, while I enjoy that, as soon as I found out it’s nothing like the original and how good the original is supposed to smell, I knew it won’t be long before I get my hands on it.

Do you happen to know if the Miss Dior Original extrait de parfum and/or the Miss Dior eau de toilette originale Dior is currently selling are true to the vintages?

    • Portia says:

      Hey Ren,
The current Miss Dior in all iterations is quite different to the 20th century version. Most of them are very nice though, have yet to meet one I hate.

    • Sapphire says:

Hi Ren, you can get the original formula Miss Dior (though not going to be quite as good as vintage) from Saks Fifth Avenue. On their website you have to look for the one with the old-fashioned label for the edt. The extrait is called Miss Dior Original.

  • Tara says:

I ADORE my decant and vintage Miss Dior will forever remind me of you, Portia. I am already thinking about getting hold of a bottle.

    • Portia says:

      Hey Tara,
One day we will wear our Miss Dior together and waft harmoniously around Sydney. HOPEFULLY in 2018.

  • solanace says:

Very posh and no nonsense, as I remember it. My working class mom clearly got a lot of pleasure from her ‘pied de poule’ decorated bottle in the eighties, while sporting showerpads, colored scarpins matching the outfit and a big, fluffy hairdo. Hope you have lots of fun with your MD, as well. Happy to know the juice is fine, this bottle looks like it survived the end of Atlantis!

    • Portia says:

      Hey Solace,
Your Mum sounds like a slice of heaven.
Yeah it is pretty beat up, ha ha ha Atlantis! More like towering inferno.

  • Yes, I LOVE vintage Miss Dior! I got my little mini bottle of the pure perfume from someone on eBay. It’s from the 50’s or 60’s and it is gorgeous. It has so much attitude!! I read that the vintage had a bunch of castoreum in it; but you’re right, the whole is more than the sum of its parts. It’s a masterpiece.

    • Portia says:

      Hi there Michelle,
WOW! I bet your parfum smells amazing. I have a couple of the older ones too, very special.
