Fig Tree by Laurie Ericsson for Sonoma Scent Studio 2011

Hi there Perfume Posse! Fig Tree! Where have you been all my life? I quite like fig in fragrance. There was a moment a couple of years ago when it seemed EVERY new scent had some figgy inclusions. I wanted to do a post called Getting Figgy With It but even my loyal and loving partner Jin pooh poohed it. I already have a few fig frags but this one is so different.

Fig Tree by Laurie Ericsson for Sonoma Scent Studio 2011Fragrantica

Fragrantica gives these featured accords:
Green fig, fig tree, fig leaf, vanilla, Virginia cedar, patchouli, tonka, musk

Interestingly Fig Tree opens with a fig and choc/patchouli. While I am smelling the fruit and tree of the fig it’s the fruit that stands front and centre. I’ve never had a chocolate covered fig but now I feel as if I have. It’s interesting, different and happily surprising.

The effect lasts only minutes but it’s a fabulous welcome to the fig groves. The heart is far more woodsy and lightly salted. Like the Greek islands where fig groves are so abundant. I did spend a week on a Greek island but the twisted old trunks of olives were its main fare so I’m having to improvise in my olfactory imagination what the figs would have brought.

The hot sunlight and dusty air, you sit beneath the fig trees and maybe you’re shredding a leaf as you watch the sea traffic down the hill slowly going about their day. It will be siesta time soon so everyone is heading home and there’s already a feeling of overheated lassitude about the world. You’re hot but shaded and the earth is warm and lightly moist from last nights rain but not wet, its steamed itself out through the morning. Soon there’ll only be scorpions and fools out. You eat your figs and sweet fruit cheese and are ready for a snooze. This is the smell of Fig Tree. Bravo Laurie Ericsson, it’s magnificent.

Laurie Ericsson says: Many fig scents have strong coconut notes from the creamy lactones that are often used in fig accords. In Fig Tree, I chose to minimize the coconut rather than to accentuate it. I envisioned a perfume that would evoke the various aspects of a fig tree in summer, with green, fruity, creamy, and woodsy notes.

How apropos, I am wearing a fig fragrance today! 🙂 I am one of those people who love the coconut duo, though. I am wearing L’Artisan Premier Figuier today and layered CSP Coco Extreme over it. Bringing a tropical vibe to a dreary day where I live!

    • Portia says:

      Hey Otamum,
LOVE a tropical vibe on a dreary day. L’Artisan Premier Figuier is so bloody good, you must smell beautiful.

I generally like fig scents, but never really stopped to think what a fig tree smells like. My neighbor has two recently planted fig trees in their front yard. I guess I need to go knock on their door and ask if I can stick my nose in their trees and maybe rub some of the leaves to release the scent. Not sure the trees have born enough fruit yet to ask if I can buy some figs off of them. Figs are in season right now here in northern CA. Think I’ll buy a small basket today on my way home.

    • Portia says:

      How lucky are you Tatiana,
A fig tree next door. I wonder if they grow well here in Sydney?

      • Tatiana says:

Unless I’m mistaken about how mild your winters are, I don’t see why not. Figs like warm weather. So unless you have continuous weather below freezing in the winter I think they would do well. Over time fig trees can grow to be very large, but I’m guessing that is decades in the making and depends on which cultivar is planted.

OMG please do a post called Gettin’ Figgy With It!!!! This SSS scent sounds intriguing — I like the idea of suppressing the coconut note that’s common in fig perfumes, but I’m also not a fan of patchouli. I love me some fig scents — my faves are at opposite ends of the spectrum: L’Artisan’s Premier Figuer, which is very plush and creamy (and coconutty), and Neela Vermeire’s Ashoka, which is very dry and green.

    • Portia says:

      Oh HeidiC,
You’ve picked two of my favourite figs. BOTH of which I have FBs. L’Artisan’s Premier Figuer, was bought in Budapest on Jin and my first big trip together, and Neela Vermeire’s Ashoka I got to try some mods of before it was released. Both incredibly special scents for me.

    • Kandice says:

Heidi, I’m rather patchouli adverse and I can’t smell that in this scent at all. I would definitely recommend trying a sample!

  • Kathleen Smith says:

I’ve sampled the amber noir and fireside from Sonoma Studio. They were both cozy well-made scents, and I love they are natural. They weren’t how I wanted to smell but I loved experiencing the fragrances.
I don’t think I’ve ever sampled a fig fragrance and can’t imagine it.

    • Portia says:

      Hey Kathleen,
I think you might really love to try some fig. Above you can see March’s Figmania 1 & 2. There have been a hoarse of new ones released since then but I think it’s always nice to start at the beginning.

I have a travel spray but will obtain the small bottle of this (love that Laurie offers the small ones!). My favorite fig, but I am a huge fan of Laurie’s work. Also have small bottles of Champagne des Bois and Equestrian. Great great longevity, too- I haven’t tried any other figs that lasted on my skin.

    • Portia says:

      Hey there Mmkinpa,
Yes, I also love the multiple sizes many of the Indie houses offer. Who needs 100ml of almost anything?

  • Kate says:

I have Incense Pure but need to be careful when I wear it; if I get overheated I fry the (sigh) white-musky base and it goes sour on me. I’ve been interested in some of the other ones and I love fig fragrances (although Kandice’s comment above suggests this one is also loaded with Damn Musk). I seem to remember their Canadian shipping was prohibitive even as these things go, but it’s been awhile.

  • March says:

LOL I just noticed the fig posts show up right above comments in the “Related” post section…

  • March says:

Hah! I love fig and I need to try this one. I sort of burned myself out? Also a few years ago I did TWO posts on here, I believe — Figmania 1 and 2? Your name is much better! I’m ready for the Return of the Fig.

    • Portia says:

WOW! Two fig posts is a big deal.
I remember buying a Fig-centric Sample Set very early on in my blogging life and falling madly in love with ALL of them.
Return of the FIG! is a wonderful title.

  • Kandice says:

I just ordered some samples from there since I had never tried them. Fig Tree was definitely my favorite. On me it skews more of a soapy, clean scent. But there is something addictive about it. The first time I wore it, I kept huffing my wrist all day. I will definitely be getting some in the future. And you know what prompted me to buy the sample of it? A mention you had of it in one of your postings over on APJ. Thanks for the recommendation, Portia!

    • Portia says:

      Hey Kandice,
Interesting how our bodies can change the way a fragrance smells. It’s a great sample deal that SSS has too.
YAY!! So glad to have enabled you to something you love.

“Getting Figgy With It” tickled my funny bone. I haven’t tried any Sonoma scents but this sounds very intriguing. I do enjoy your posts, Portia.

I haven’t tried the Scent Studio line, I am trying to work my way through the huge pile of decants to be reviewed. When I get some space, I will check them out.
