Last gasp of (my) summer

Chanel last gaspWell, it’s almost October and it’s still in the upper 80s, with a day in the 90s forecast for later this week. So in the spirit of making the best of it, we went to our local pool for its final weekend being open, basically our last gasp of summer.

The pool complex was being renovated into early in the summer, so they decided it was only fair to keep it open a little longer, past their usual Labor Day weekend closing. And it was so nice to be out there without it being an oven. They’ve expanded the one pool and made it rather resort-like, with great landscaping, cabana areas, an expanded snack bar with huge pitchers of lime and lemon water out front, a ping-pong table, foosball and more. And then created a new kids’ pool with a waterslide, a water cannon and those water mushroom things. Such fun to see the kiddies laughing and splashing and having a ball!

It was such a pleasant experience that it even made me a little bittersweet, even though I dearly love autumn. So even though it may be already fall where you are, it really did feel like my last gasp of summer, and as such, I’m struggling with what to wear, perfume-wise.

So on a visit to Nordstrom a day or two ago, I had the kind SA make me up a sample of Chanel Cristalle. And I think it’s doing the trick to get me over this hump; crisp enough to cut the heat but not overwhelmingly summer-y either. I’d forgotten how much I liked it, since I began wearing it since its launch back in 19?? And I think I’m going to pull out the Annick Goutal Les Nuits d’Hadrien as well to get me through the next week or so.

Anyhoo, what are your scents for your last gasp of summer? Or if you’ve passed your last gasp, what are you wearing and loving now?

It’s been pretty hot in Dallas, as it often is through September, but we’re getting to the “highs in the 80’s, lows in the 60’s” point. When it gets to “highs in the 70’s, lows in the 50’s point, we’ll turn off the ac, open the windows, and I’ll bring out Bulgari Jasmin Noir L’Essence and my vanilla-y scents again!

Just going into summer now Ann, things are warming up down here and I’ve already had my first swim of the season.
I keep spritzing Penhaligon’s newest Savoy Steam. It’s so weird it could be a CdG but I am totally loving it.

Today I am wearing Blue & Shay Dandelion Fig. The tiny bit of bitterness makes it autumnal, I think.

    • Ann says:

Ooh, I have not tried that one but it sounds great. A little bitterness can be such a nice contrast in a scent, and give it depth and interest. Enjoy!!

In Minneapolis, it was in the high 80s all last week. We had a big storm last night that I think broke the heat — it’s supposed to be cool & cloudy this week. But I made it through last week with a bottle of Silences that I bought at a serious discount ($10, I think?), thanks to Portia’s column a couple weeks ago. I am so in love with it — never smelled it before, but the best blind purchase ever.

    • Ann says:

Heidi, I sure hope the weather has broken for you. It’s just seems so wrong for you guys up there to have high 80s and it’s practically October! Congrats on the Silences — it’s a great scent, isn’t it? Now I have to go dig up my sample. 🙂

Here in Northern Virginia, we’re also having a very hot, almost July-like late September, Ann. I wore Cristalle eau Verte just yesterday, one of my very most favorite summer scents. Today it’s Bobbi Brown Beach. So I’m getting way more weeks of use out of the summer scents this year. Your community pool sounds really delightful. We have a pool, too, but I didn’t go to it a single time this year. Now that my kids and older and no longer do swim team, I just get caught up in my life centered around home and forget to go. I’m looking forward to cooler temps next weekend! 🙂

    • Ann says:

Dina, you guys are having identical weather to us. Love the CEV and the BB Beach, too! It is hard to get to the pool most of the time, but we just had to go to enjoy it one last time. Fall temps will be very welcome here as well!

My scent today is Sonoma Scent Studio Jour Ensoleille. Over the last few days, though, I have been sticking to various colognes due to the heat. Hoping this one doesn’t overwhelm me as it heats up today. Fall temps on Thursday!

    • Ann says:

Oh, lucky you to be able to wear a SSS scent!! Her creations are lovely, but there is something in the base of many of them that just does not agree with my skin. Yes, colognes are great right now. Hoping for a little cooler spell by the weekend here.

Denver went from summer to fall instantly. It has been cold and rainy. I brought out my beloved Arpege. More of a winter scent for me; however, this sudden cold spell left me longing for a vintage cozy vibe.

    • Ann says:

The weather changes so fast out that way, doesn’t it? But glad it gave you a chance to wear a beloved favorite. Enjoy!

  • Tara C says:

It is beastly hot and humid in Montreal, I am gasping myself, but it seems the heat wave will end Wednesday and things will drop closer to normal. Today I wore Verte Violette. Tomorrow I’m thinking L’Ombre dans l’Eau or Bulgari Thé Bleu.

    • Ann says:

Tara, sorry to hear it’s uncomfortable up your way, too. Come on, fall!! Nice scent choices, and I especially like the Bulgari. They make a lovely moist towelette in that scent that is so refreshing.
