See, what had happened was…and other excuses…and WINNERS!

I am SUCH a liar.  I told you we were going to discuss ‘lagenlook’ today – and I. Wuz. WRONG!  Because This Stuff:

  1. Construction (as in Home stuff, not my job).  In the weird way that construction/reno is, it has gone from ‘oh, let’s just get that 2nd bathroom done’ to full-scale ‘stuff’, like having to rip out the French doors, repair them, re-install them correctly and, while we were at that particular place in gathering lemons, El O decided to make lemonade with the transom (which exists because the wood above the wrongly-installed French doors had rotted out).  So.  I ain’t mad.

my visuals are weird – tilt your head left 😉

  2. It was going to happen anyway but BOY! am I glad it’s happening now.  Utility closet.  This is the most closet-free home in the USofA, sweatergawd!  El O is slowly-but-surely changing that so again, Ain’t Mad.   It’s nice to have a place to put mops/brooms/vacuums, etc.  He wants to be The God of the Shelving Within – I’mo let him because it seems like such a weird hill to die on, doesn’t it?  And I couldn’t care less – if I can shove the vacuums in there and shut the door, I’m happy.  It is odd, though.  I mean, it’s not as if he does any cleaning.  He was the same way with the laundry cabinet – again, hokay!  He actually wanted to tell me where to put the bleach!  I’ll tell you where to put the bleach, doll! lol!  Whatever.  Just get the damb thing done!  Is he the only Weird Man? Why would he care?  I don’t care how he organizes his power tools! (hint:  he doesn’t.  this is NOT a Lean setup!  The garage looks like Lowe’s threw up in it!). But if I challenge him on the shelves he’ll just stop Doing – and we want More Doing, don’t we?  Durn tootin’!
  3. dunno why. tilt left, again 😉

  4. sudden freeze.  Tuesday, I broiled.  89F.  Thursday night I was putting tender plants in the greenhouse and spraying the remaining plants to keep from freezing (they are all fine).  A 50o drop in temps in less than 3 days.  I got your ‘lagenlook’ rightchere!  It’s called a turtleneck sweater under a fleece shirt and an oiled canvas jacket. ( Statement necklace not included). I blame Michael.  And velociraptors.  I found a cold-stunned dragonfly on the sidewalk, brought it back to the greenhouse to see if it could warm up – not looking great but hey, ya nebber know.  Now I’ve got Zoologist on my mind!  (UPDATE!  Dragonfly was sluggishly alive this am and when I went into the greenhouse around 2p, I couldn’t find him!  So.  He’s either gone to Glory or gone South!  Either way, at least he didn’t die on that sidewalk.

    cold dragon

    4.  Caramel.  It’s that time of year.  So I’ve been baking.  Just a little bit and mostly so I can play with caramel and do (in my best Paul Hollywood imitation) ‘shugawuck’ !   In addition to being tasty as hell, caramel just smells so damb good.  I tend to like a slightly burnt taste to my own, so take it almost as far as Michael Recchiuti (not quite, as I’m still a bit skeered of burning the house down)  – whenever I make caramel I always wonder about perfumes with caramel notes.  Turns out Fragrantica has a fascinating article on that! What’s interesting to me is, as much as I love the scent of cooking caramel, I don’t like any of the perfumes listed in the article, save the Fresh Tobacco Caramel – and I suspect my liking of it is because it comes close to that smoky, ‘burnt’ taste/smell I love so much.

Sherry Yard Master Caramel for all the ‘shugawuck’ 😉

  5. (yeah, I know – okay, 4A, how’s that?) – I promise, this is the last one.  It’s PATHS!  Y’all, this right here?  THIS IS MY OPUS!!!  I have actually cleared paths in the two biggest borders (I’m going to do a controlled burn in the kitchen garden in the spring because it’s either that or napalm).  Clearing is one thing – I clear all the time.  Actually putting down barriers is another.  And I rarely do it.  Because I am a bonehead.  But this year?  I DID IT!!!    Leftover tar paper and all those cardboard boxes!  Bless ’em, every one!  Come April, I should have a limited amount of weeding to do.  I can lay the straw and be done!  This makes me SO happy!!!so!  that’s my thang.  What’s yours?  Oh, you wannaknowhowon?  Oh.  Okay!

I’m admiring those gloves! It’s now just about cold enough to have broken out the big fuzzy fake fur leopard spots, and I’m liking striding about in that while the days are bright and dry. And I am still not so grown up I am not taking absolute delight in kicking through crunchy leaves…

  • Jennifer S says:

Arghh. We are stuck in remodeling limbo here. After taking up all the carpet to put down laminate which we had measured for, picked out and payed for…day of install comes only to be told the floors weren’t level and would cost more to fix than what we payed for the laminate! Why they didn’t tell us that when they took measurements I don’t know unless they thought we’d actually pay the extra to fix it on install day!
Sooo….shlepping 37 boxes of laminate back to the store until this gets figured out was oh so much fun and I am NOT going back to carpet and am actually getting used to the plywood sub flooring, squeaks and all. So there!
And now that my vacuum has died I no longer care that I never had a closet to put it in. Bahaha!
And…mid fifties here and sunny. Nice!

  • hczerwiec says:

We keep bouncing around in Minneapolis — 30s and snowing on Sunday, 50s and a gorgeously sunny fall day today. But the garden’s all been put to bed for the season, so I can just ignore it, except for the repeated rakings of leaves. At least I can pull out all my Cuirs!

    • Musette says:

I’m in Cuir de Lancôme as we speak – and I can’t put my garden to bed quite yet. Still bees & some butterflies – yes, even in this chilly time! So everything stays put until it goes black & slimy. xoxoxo

  • maggiecat says:

It’s cold (low 40s) here in Dallas and has been raining since Friday. And will be raining through this Friday. I’m pretty sure we used to have a season in between Summer and Winter…think it was called “Fall,” and I liked it. Hope it comes back.
And all men are weird. I say that even though I am very fond of them as a rule, especially ones like my husband and son. But they are weird. Mine complains about the makeup and perfume containers on the counter (granted, there are more than a few of these but they’re all on “my side.”) yet consistently leaves his clothes – clean, dirty, in-between – on the bed. He does not see sleeping with his wardrobe as a problem. But that perfume bottle on the counter….
    Sigh.

    • Musette says:

omg. SO ‘yes’! and I laughed like a lima bean at the ‘sleeping with his wardrobe’. Ew! I can barely sleep if I have clean, FOLDED clothes sitting on my dresser! I’d have nightmares if they were actually on the bed! xoxox

  • TeaInTheGarden says:

I’m near Chicago, so your weather and mine, at least for the last week? Same. Garden-wise, I’m down to two pots of annuals. They aren’t quite done, but it’s coming. Divided and moved an iris, in spite of a Foot With Issues And It Needs to Calm Down. My garden goals are modest.

Food: I’m almost curbing the impulse to buy lots of fall-themed desserty things. (Trader Joe’s anyone?) Also, excessively thrilled over finding nice mandarines at the grocery!

Scent: looking forward to an order of a few Root Candles votives. I haven’t yet given in to the urge to buy expensive candles, but trust me, I believe everyone who says they are absolutely worth it! I also just ordered a few DSH samples. I have stuff for fall and winter, but the fact is, I’m kind of in it for the novelty. I used to be perplexed by folks who declared they didn’t need 100ml of anything. At this point, it seems unlikely that I will empty 30ml…

Remodeling projects: A friend of mine talked about Might-As-Well-Hell. You start with a humble goal, and the next thing you know, it’s utter chaos, because, hey!, while you are at it… (Also, my ManAboutTheHouse also has developed Previously Undetected Areas of ‘Expertise’. Like floor cleaning. Seriously, dude? We’ve been married 30 years. Had no clue. 😉

    • Musette says:

omg! that made me LOL! Years ago, when I was mopping the kitchen floor, El O suddenly reached out, grabbed the mop and said ‘here. let me show you how to do that’. Sweatergawd. Sometimes ya just gotta wonder… xoxoxo

  • AnnieA says:

Tara, a friend is going to San Diego in a couple of weeks for the first time. Any suggestions?

Vancouver has autumn leaves! They’re usually brown mush by now.

    • Tara C says:

What kind of suggestions are you looking for? There isn’t much in the way of perfume shopping, just dept. store stuff. There are lots of good restaurants, although I rarely eat out. Balboa Park is nice and has museums. Plenty of sports activities, a zoo, a wild animal park, Sea World, etc.

      • AnnieA says:

Thanks for the suggestions – the friend is more of an Ulta gal so no worries about perfume places. Maybe a restaurant suggestion or two?

  • Kathleen says:

It was straight from summer to winter in Colorado. Fall is my favorite and where did it go? Weird hot 90’s in September, then suddenly cold and snow. Only good thing is pulling out my winter loving fragrances and surrounded by gorgeous ambers.

  • March says:

September was a total fail — might as well have been August. Now like Dina said it’s gloriously fall-feeling! First day of that was Saturday. Which of course meant that’s when I discovered the heat wouldn’t kick on (sound familiar?) ANYWAY. They’re supposed to be here this morning to take a gander at it. I need to dig my warm stuff out of the back closet.

    • March says:

Oh, and in celebration of colder weather I put on some Teo Cabanel Alahine!

      • Musette says:

omg. are you SERIOUS? I’m a fan of a cool house – but on my own terms. Hope that gets fixed pronto!!!

and I know how you likes yo’ Alahiiiiiine! xoxoxo

  • bevfred says:

It’s getting cold here in Canada and this morning for the first time in ages I put Aromatics Elixir on. It’s a cool weather scent to me although sometimes I’ll wear it in the summer just to be perverse!

    • Musette says:

as I do with Amouage Tribute Attar! Wear it when you want – I’ll bet it smells glorious in the heat! Just like Tribute Attar. xoxo

  • Brigitte says:

It’s very cold now in my neck of the woods! After we had unseasonably warm weather last week.

    • Musette says:

feelin’ yer paiiin! we had a killing frost last night – all the tomatoes and nasturtiums are gone. Dahlia foliage, too, though the flowers survived. xoxo

  • Dina C. says:

Here in Virginia we also did that dramatic drop in temps from the 90s down into the 60s. So all of a sudden it finally feels fallish. But I really want it to go down some more cause if I turn the heat on in the house then it gets stuffy. We just replaced the front door of our house which was worn out from 30+ years of kids slamming it, and it hung skewgee. So nice to have a door that works properly now. I’ve had a chance to wear some fall scents like Bois des Iles and Cuir de Russie and even a bit of Mitsouko, so perfume life is good. Thanks Musette Anita for your wonderful posts!

    • Musette says:

lol – sisters from another Mother (Nature) – drives my bestie in-SANE that I keep my house so cool. Right now it’s perking along at a toasty 57F! Gas forced-air is gross – and I do whatever I can to minimize it. And I’ve been in CdR – a LOT. The vintage parfum. Divine! Mitsouko as well. Are you sure we’re not the same person? 😉 xoxo

  • Libby says:

In Seattle we have had a glorious autumn, simply because it is not rainin’ yet… So all the beautiful leaves don’t got battered into the concrete…. However we had a dry summer, so I’m kinda waiting for the rain ,but kinda not looking forward to really gray days . Oh well, it will what it will.
And oh my goodness, I think i won ! This is sweet as lately all I won is a broken point toe, all the way thru .. So having a new scent to lift me up and keep my limping lightly will be wonderful. Thank you for the generous drawing, I will email you!

    • Musette says:

OW! and be careful! and congratulations! I love Seattle in the rain – except when it’s raining! lol! I remember walking down the street and BOOM! it just deluged! Y’all are weird – but the roses LOVE it! xoxoxo

  • Michelle J Little says:

It did this really hot thing in Buffalo last week and now it’s cold and very much Autumn. Kind of Romantic though with blustering winds and blowing dark clouds and dancing leaves. I’m feeling it. Nice to have a break from the heat but I miss my warm late night walks. AS always I love your posts Musette. Thanks for being you.

    • Musette says:

those blustery days are romantic AF, aren’t they? I used to have that ‘romance on the heath’ thing going, except I was 16, with braces and spots – but a girl could dream! xoxo

and thank you for that lovely sentiment! <3

  • RoseMacaroon says:

Oh bless you, Musette, I keep getting too preoccupied to comment OR enter any draws, so this feels like a sweet second chance. OK, I’m in the SF bay area, and it’s been warmer lately than at any point this past summer, and just a bit peculiar at times with semi-tropically warm high winds, one evening of rain, but really not much to report. It was depressingly cold all summer (depressingly, I say, as a person who should qualify as being severely allergic to cold weather except that that’s not a thing), and of course was unable to complain about it as that would have been seriously dickish given the problematically hot weather that ruled over absolutely every other place. So now I’m just quietly resigning myself to a couple seasons worth of discomfort while figuring out which part of the world it would make the most strategic sense to move to. I loved your post just as always! Husbands are the funniest. Which is very much a good thing. And thanks again for the draw!

    • Musette says:

it is SO a ‘thing’. Yes. It. Is. I suffer from it, myself. Living in IL I LOL! at the notion of you thinking the Bay area is cold. As do my peeps, who live in places like The Boundary Waters (waay up North) laugh at me. 😉

  • Tara C says:

Gorgeous and sunny in San Diego, enjoying new puppy antics and cuddles.

  • Janet in California says:

It was 80 today in beautiful Santa Cruz, CA. No rain yet this month though and fires are on all our minds. Scary dry.
We are in the middle of a remodel here too. Horrible and exciting!
