La Colonia by Oliver & Co

Hello Posse. Jin and I are far and away on our Honeymoon, up here in the late Northern Hemisphere spring. What better way to celebrate that than to sniff one of the most vibrant and interesting colognes available in the current market, La Colonia. I talked previously about another in the range Vaninger. You may not know but the Oliver & Co brand has been brought out of mainstream sellers and ONLY sells through the Oliver & CO site now. This way Oliver Valverde, perfumer and company director, can go his own way without the pressure and expectation of making super saleable scent. The fight is for artistic merit and I’d like to see him win. I also love that the whole range comes in 16ml Travel Size! Perfect.

Parfumo gives these featured accords:
Bergamot, Dill, Green pepper, Jasmine, Lily-of-the-valley, Ozone, Sandalwood, Cedarwood

La Colonia takes dill as its centrepiece. A lightly anise, green herb that is both zesty and mown grass/hay like. It is paired with a very lightly salted cool sea breeze and the wet zing of fresh cut capsicum. It sounds like a freshy, and it is refreshing, but La Colonia is infinitely more interesting than what most people see and smell as a freshy.

The flowers are merely backing but when I really put my nose to wrist I can detect the jasmine, a clean jasmine on the breeze. The woods are fresh hewn but only bit players, even though they are quite prominent they never make as big a show as the dill and ozonic/aquatic.

Unisex but leaning towards a mens gym locker room. Summer is coming and La Colonia could be a perfect heart beater. Long lasting and elegantly cooling. This is next generation fresh.

Next generation fresh….I like that! Sounds really good for hot weather.

  • March says:

Ooooh, that sounds interesting and perfect for summer!

  • Maya says:

There are a few things I don’t like in perfume. Dill is one of them. Though I enjoy a dill pickle now and again, when I smell dill in perfume, all I see in my mind is pickles. That’s why I had such an awful time finding a great – for me – sandalwood perfume. Many of them have a pervasive background smell that reads as dill. Just no. 🙂
But the name La Colonia reminded me about Rasei Fort Kolonya which I have already included on my next sample order list. I think I might really like this one and I have some friends who could potentially love it.

      Hey there Maya,
Currently in Russia and they use dill in so much of their food. I have a brand new appreciation of how delicious it is in food. Hopefully for the rest of my life the scent of dill will remind me of these wonderful weeks of our honeymoon.
Kolonya is bloody brilliant. I can’t wait to read what you think,

I was just thinning out my circular border, which is full of dill seedlings (it’s brutal like that) – what an aromatic way to spend a lovely Spring afternoon. As Hczerwiec said, though, I can’t imagine it in scent. Could be a winnah!

xoxoxo and enjoy your honeymoon. Though I suspect every day is a bit of a honeymoon for you two! 😉 Love you both.

  • hczerwiec says:

Dill! I can’t even imagine that as an organizing principle for a scent! That’s startling!

    • Portia says:

      Hi there hczerwiec,
It’s easier to love than you’d think. Having said that, all of the Oliver & Co fragrances are slightly left of centre and push my ideas of fragrance outwards.
