Random Wednesday: Makeup

Hey, everyone.  Happy Wednesday.

Patty’s bummed not to be on here but she’s got her hands full with the pups, and I’m wondering – would you be interested in a makeup post?  We haven’t done one in awhile and I was thinking we could make it a semi-regular feature – Monthly Makeup?

I know at least some folks here love makeup, a pretty common overlap with perfume fans.  But I don’t want to foist this on you if you’re not interested.  Topics I thought of, waiting for the train:

  • A post on those monthly makeup boxes. I’m on my third month of the Ipsy Glam Plus and I’m still on the fence about it.  Do I like the element of surprise, and the bargain I get on the products, enough to offset the fact that I only like some of them?  (Coming soon on the Posse – my Ipsy fail giveaway, lol.)
  • Eyelashes! So, I lost my mind a few months ago and decided to test-drive some new-to-me eyelash options.  I’ve tried a bunch of new mascaras, multiple false strip lashes, plus the magnetic ones, and the cult fave Lashify, and I have my usual highly opinionated thoughts about all of them.
  • Fall makeup. I like to switch it up now that my face isn’t melting off in 95-degree humidity.

Your turn!  Any thoughts on the subject of makeup?  Questions?  Objections?

Yes to make-up and skin care, please!  As I’ve gotten older (early 60’s), I have little interest in the newest thing (I don’t want sparkly red eyeshadow.  or glitter…), I find that I have a more functional approach to makeup and a more complicated approach to skin care instead of vice versa.  My job as a college professor puts me in front of an audience most days, and I need to not scare them any more than I can help, except when I’m talking about research projects, at which point I WANT them scared.  Taking care of my skin and putting on makeup are important parts of my self-care rituals every day, and I love reading about these topics and sharing what I’ve found For example, I’m a mascara snob  (long, full, curly, totally invisisble eyelashes here) and loving Mary Kay Ultimate mascara.  Affordable, stays on, easy to remove, makes my lashes look great – what’s not to like?
    Looking forward to the discussion!

Alrighty then, this topic seems like a winner!  Yes, at this point I think we’re looking for quality and longevity?  Makeup is less about what to wear clubbing and more about what to wear to work for 10 hours and not morph into Edward Scissorhands.  I do feel like mascara is *the* hardest piece, at least for me.  My eyelashes literally touch my chipmunk cheeks, so mascara involves a lot of careful application.

Yes to makeup/skin care discussions/posts.  I, too, am in my early 50s (yikes, I have a hard time even writing it!!) and find that most discussions are written by very young 20 somethings that have nothing in common with me at this point in my life.  I don’t wear a lot of makeup, and I try to stay with “clean” lines.  I do LOVE mascara, and wear a bit of concealer and/or foundation to even out skin tone.  I do love RMS for my beauty oil and un-coverup.  I’m totally curious how you felt about the mascaras you tried.  I have fairly long lashes, so I want something that curls, lenthens and defines.  I think it’s hilarious how all the younger gals are wearing false lashes as some just look plain ridiculous.  Now I’m sounding old… LOL!

    • March says:

That was my issue with the falsies — they look so unnatural to me.  I think the people who wear them have gotten so used to the look, it doesn’t register as unnatural to them any more.  Other issue was I was constantly aware of them on my eyes.  For mascara, I’ve decided that you need to try a bunch until you find out what works for you.  The fiber mascaras can look great but the fibers can be an issue.  For me, one of those plastic wand tips with the short teeth works better than the traditional brush-looking thing (I too have very long lashes — I want more curl and definition, not length.)  Right now I’m loving Smashbox Super Fan and Buxom volumizing.  A BIG development for me was banishing the raccoon eye: whatever I put on, I top with Maybelline Lash Discovery in waterproof as a topcoat, and I powder carefully under my eyes with a powder that doesn’t show.

  • Musette says:

LOL!  I know I am the despair of your makeup-lovin’ self, with my adherence to YLLB, YNBB, YEVERYTHINGBB!  But I’m old, with a vaguely sallowish skin, I wear glasses and my hair is super-curly (and going grey).  Too much color and I end up looking like Krusty the Klown (or Sideshow Bob – I forget which one of them has that look)
But!!!  as I posted in the nails post, I fell madly in love with Pat McGrath’s new serum foundation, Skin Fetish.  Currently testing the darker one, since I still have vestiges of my summer skincolor.  It’s gorgeous, a little goes a LONG way – and best of all, I don’t get that urge to take a hot washcloth to my face 30 seconds after application.  The only other foundation that works like that for me is Prescriptives and it doesn’t give the coverage that Skin Fetish does.

Yes to makeup (and skincare) posts!  I’m late 50s and completely agree about the increasing amount of grooming it takes these days – ugh!  Also have many of the Ordinary products and love – their retinol, buffet antioxidant serum and the zinc and niacinamide.  Looking forward to makeup posts – especially anything relevant to us aging beauties?

    • March says:

LOVE the Ordinary — I have most of their stuff and use it regularly.  You aging beauty, how’s your sunscreen game?  So important.

  • Dina C. says:

Sure, I’d be happy to read about everyone’s thoughts on makeup. I still wear it almost every day.

  • Elizabeth Watson says:

I have always loved makeup and would really appreciate the occasional makeup/skincare post. I have scaled back on the amount of makeup I use, since I reached my 60s, but am always interested in the subject.

  • rosarita says:

Yep, I’m up for makeup/skincare/nails/how time consuming grooming is the older I get/etc. I got back into makeup in 2016 when I was caretaker for both my parents and my father first became seriously ill through his death in ’17. An Ulta store opened close to my house and it was so soothing to drift through there after an exhausting day and look at all the pretty things. I don’t subscribe to any monthly boxes because my daughter subscribes to several and I get her cast offs, it’s nice because we have completely different coloring and skincare needs.

    • Musette says:

I’m with you, A, on how soothing a drift through an Ulta or Sephora can be.  There’s a No Pressure vibe in those stores that you don’t get in regular retail and sometimes, after a hard-assed day, you just want to pretend that choosing the right color lipstick is the most pressing issue you have! ?

I’m definitely more into makeup and skin care since I turned 50.  I also get the Ipsy Glam Bag Plus (used to get Boxycharm) but am getting close to ending it; over time the product overload gets to you and I end up with a lot to swap or donate.

    • March says:

I think I’m starting to feel the same way.  It’s fun, but if I’m one of those people who only wants to have what I’m going to use (and apparently I am), it’s just one more housekeeping duty.

Thumbs up here for makeup/skincare posts. I’m less on the makeup at the moment (working from home — but a friend recently gifted me with a Lipstick Queen lippie that is the perfect every day red) and more on the skincare. Serums — seriously into serums and oils (got a titchy bottle of the Votary seed oil … oh, my, that stuff is good) … and retinol plus always on the lookout for a better tinted moisturiser.

    • March says:

lord I am the Quing of skincare….. I’m still doing elements of the K-beauty thing, plus a lot of the Ordinary, have you tried them?  I bet you have…. pretty amazing stuff.  Tinted moisturizers never make me as happy, I think because my face is already soooo moisturized?  I tend to just go for the foundation, veeery lightly applied.

      • cinnamon says:

yup on some Ordinary stuff. I guess I sort of do a mix of high/low end. hmmm on TM. i have so many steps i do but given one of them is high factor SPF maybe i should just shift my focus to good, lightweight non-SPF foundation. i have a bottle of the Glossier stuff (and their concealer) which I haven’t really played with much.

        • cinnamon says:

          ack. SPF

        • March says:

Yes, that’s what I do.  I have SPF as a whole separate routine, and eventually I figured out that for me, a good foundation lightly applied lasted longer and looked better than tinted moisturizer.  While we’re nattering about suncreen, I really love the Supergoop line.  I use their unseen sunscreen as primer, plus their moisturizer, plus the setting spray and/or powder lol.

I love makeup and skin care products, almost as much as perfume so I am game for any discussion. I feel we can all learn from each other. I just now opened my monthly Allure box and mostly love and use the products. I subscribed to Ipsy for over one year and found I didn’t live too many of the products so I cancelled. I also subscribe to Dermstore monthly box and Scentbird for perfume.
i really enjoy the element of surprise, like a gift every month!

      Yaaaaay makeup! And skincare…
Anyways, i do love this subject. I recently started wearing it a little more frequently after very occasional use since the last 15 yrs, and the thing I’m enjoying most is how many green beauty brands there are currently in existence.  Splurged on rituel de fille products and couldn’t be happier. Also, YouTube…there wasn’t any the last time i had any interest in makeup. I have those same reservations about cosmetics-centered subscription boxes, but my love for clean beauty skincare subscription boxes is ridiculous. I agree, like receiving presents in the mail.

      • March says:

HAHAHAHA the youtube rabbit hole.  I confessed to my eldest daughter somewhat shamefacedly about how much I loved watching them, including ones with looks I would never wear; she assured me it was completely normal #rolereversal

        • Kathleen says:

My favorite youtuber that is over 50, classy and intelligent regarding everything skincare and makeup is Angie from Hot and Flashy.  She does her research and is very knowledgeable and fun to listen to/watch.

Ok, sounds like we should definitely do a beauty box post with notes, tips, pros and cons….
