Perfume Polls!

So my day got crazy, and I want to try out this new Poll thing. I’ll confess, my perfume wearing during the pandemic has been hit or miss – some days it is ridiculous, I stink to high heaven with everything I’ve tried, and then I got a few days with almost nothing.  I then have a couple of days with some old fave comfort scents. You?  So vote and then tell me what you are wearing most or what you are looking forward to most.

Also, this came up a couple of weeks ago, and with the economic challenges, price on perfume may be facing some adapting. I know I saw a lovely new release coming out, and I thought, that sounds interesting.  A line I’ve never heard of, and they are at $280 a bottle.  :::gulp:::  Okay, that’s my no.  I may pay something stupid for a perfumer or line I know their work, but yikes, 280.  I haven’t ordered samples to try yet because I’m thinking I don’t want to really support this entry level $280 a bottle direction.

So another poll on Price

I’m wearing at least two, sometimes three fragrances a day. I have a ridiculous amount of samples to work through so I’m using this time off work to douse myself. I’m writing notes too, otherwise I won’t remember the details. I’ll wear the first one all day if it’s good. Otherwise I wash it off and try again.

Agree with everyone here wishing there were smaller bottles or travel sets available. I already spend more than I should on samples and decants, but honestly, I’d buy a LOT more if 15 mls were readily available. Fingers crossed more companies will do this is the future.

  • Musette says:

I’ve been very much hit or miss but when I do ‘hit’ it’s almost.. perverse! I’ve been wearing the most luxe scents to do the filthiest garden jobs – a No22 perfume(!) to move a squickton of compost, Dia extrait to weed and set up a potato bed… it’s almost as if I’m in Bizarro World, Garden Edition!

  • Dina C. says:

I’ve been wearing a combination of Spring favorites (green florals), easy comfort scents (Clair de Musc, various NR scents), and trying out some samples that are lying around (nothing earth shaking). Mostly sticking with the tried and true.

  • Tara C says:

I am spraying and layering multiple times per day! As for buying, very little, as I already have a ridiculous amount of perfume. I try to keep the per bottle price down around 150€ or less. I love 30ml or 15ml bottles as decants evaporate, so I stopped buying them.

  • rosarita313 says:

I wear a lot of perfume daily – one in the morning, another around 4-5:00 ish and another one to sleep in, and that hasn’t changed. As far as prices go, it’s ridiculous. I’ve always valued independent perfumers who offer travel sizes because I, too, don’t want 100ml of anything ever. The cost per ml thing can be infuriating as well; ie 10 Corso Como has been on my wishlist for ages but it’s $90/50ml on Luckyscent (where it’s been oos for a long time) and $120/100ml. C’mon! That’s why I have so many decants.

  • Eldarwen22 says:

Perfume sizes and prices have gotten ridiculous. Years ago, the Chanel Les Exclusifs line was 6.8 ounces for $200. That was a great deal. Even before the pandemic, prices for perfume got a little hard to swallow. Channel seems to be the biggest offender with raising prices. I wish more houses had travel sets for reasonable prices. I have enough perfume to last at the act 4 lifetimes.

  • Queen-Cupcake says:

I am newly retired, so I have to watch expenses, especially now that we are in the midst of a pandemic and great economic uncertainty. Fortunately, I have more full bottles, partials, and sample vials to last me several lifetimes! Unfortunately, my husband is not a big fan of perfumes in general, and I have nowhere to go because we are in self isolation. I like the poll idea, btw, even though my category isn’t represented on the first one: I wear perfume perhaps once or twice a week. On the second: I will probably not spend more than $50 a time on perfume, and only for a few samples at that.

  • MMKinPA says:

I am wearing the same number of perfumes but going ham with the sprays. I’m a teacher so I have always been conservative but now I’m truly fragrant, wafting everywhere. As for price point, I can’t bring myself to spend more than $150 for a bottle. Of course, I have spent more per ml on smaller bottles and decants, but I have always had a mental block on expensive purchases (same with clothes, shoes and bags). And at this point I have so much in my closet that I am not willing to put a significant amount of money into a single purchase. I wish every brand would offer travel sizes, tbh- decants tend to evaporate faster than manufactured travel sprays for me and I like the small amount – enough to really enjoy but not so much to seem wasteful.

    • Patty says:

Same!!!! I’m not sure why offering 15 ml sizes is so hard or why the ones that do – with a couple of exceptions – have to be so much more pricey. Creed is the worst offender here. Their 30 ml bottle price is obscene!

  • Cinnamon says:

Hiya, I am wearing more perfume currently and actually paying more attention to what I wear. As to what I would pay for a bottle, I’m with Bee that I’d prefer smaller bottles (I love the Frederic Malle travel sizes — still thinking about one of Carnal Flower). I just can’t get my head round forking out huge amounts of money for huge amounts of fragrance that I know it will take me literally years to get through. Something would have to be absolutely sublime for that to happen right now.

    • Patty says:

Yeah. I still remember when Chanel debuted those 200 ml bottles, we all gasped, then started splitting them. The price point was excellent, but I keep thinking they could have done cute little discovery sets – like Hermes does – for 4 for $ 120 or something, and probably sold a lot more perfume. Now the 500 ml bottle is out there all the time on some brands, and they have to know nobody is wearing all that – they are either splitting or decanting. It’s crazy.

  • Portia says:

    Hey Patty,
LOVE this poll thing. So fun.
Although I’m spritzing several times a day, that’s kinda normal around here so both could apply.
On the cost poll. Perfume is now expensive. Seriously expensive. I don’t think your numbers go high enough on the poll for 100ml. I start to gulp at around $400 and have crossed that line on many occasions.Obviously, I also treasure the ones that didn’t cost so much and wear them with exactly the same joy and enthusiasm.

    Keep doing POLLS please.
    Portia xx

    • Patty says:

The poll thing is in there if you want to make them! They are easy – just make the poll, save it, copy the EMBED code, paste it into your post. I love it! I’m thinking of putting up a weekly poll over on the side there. Yeah? We should come up with a list. I though most people would say over $250 is too much. Not that they won’t spend it, but if you are rational and if it isn’t a lovely JAR parfum, it’s just ridiculousl Not that I won’t or haven’t spent it, but I still think it is way, way, way too much. One of my big faves is that little vanilla number Giselle. I love it, and i think I spent $20 for the bottle, then bought 4 more because I figured it would disappear eventually. I also went shopping for Borsari Violetta, and it must be discontinued. Used to pick up a big 10 ounce bottle for like $90, now 100 ml bottles are that much. Crazy.

I’ve been retired for many years so I’m on a very limited budget. I can’t afford the epensive perfumes and have to rely on sniffing them in Dept Stores. Then again they are usually mainstream perfumes. I agree that there are now so many flooding the market it can be very overwhelming. I do enjoy reading about all the perfumes that have been purchased and written about on here and other blogs.

    • Patty says:

There are really a lot of lovely mainstream perfumes, some of my favorites are the cheapest! Like Versace Dreamer and Dior Dune. There are still some wonderful gems there!

  • Bee says:

For me the problem is that although £/$2 per mil. sounds perfectly reasonable I just don’t want or need 100ml of anything. I’d really prefer to pay a bit over the odds per mil for a 20ml bottle. Less out lay from me, less packaging in the world – it’s a win/win if only the houses I love would play along 🙂

  • filomena813 says:

There are a lot of perfumes I want to try but if the price point is ridiculous, I don’t even bother to sample for fear that I would want it. Even $200 is a lot of money for perfume. I have a large collection as I have been into perfume for many many decades. However, now there are too many new houses, too high prices and mostly (with exceptions) nothing much that is any different than any others. I still love perfume but years ago, there were not that many perfume houses and when they had a new release it was an exciting thing. Now there are a ridiculous amount of perfume houses, with new one popping every day, so it is more overwhelming than exciting. Plus, they now start off with 5 to 10 perfumes and when they do something new, it is alway a collection and not a singular perfume. So the mystery and excitement of perfume has dwindled somewhat for me, although I will still wear perfume every day until my dying day (and hopefully I will die having already sprayed some fragrance on myself).

    • Patty says:

I have a suspicion that with the economic pullback, there are some perfume companies in those higher price ranges that will be gone. There seem to have been five more to take their place as that happened, like some kind of perfume hydra, but I just think it’s going to be a tougher market at the higher price points. Maybe we’ll see flight to affordability in perfume. That would be nice to get a lot of great perfumes that are sub-$100!

    • Patty says:

I agree. I know I would not pay that much very often if I didn’t have a business related to it. There are more doing small bottles, but sometimes they price they put on them are jaw dropping. So $200 for the 100 mls and 90 for 15 mls. Huh? I mean, I buy perfume bottles, it is NOT that much more. So it should be like $45-50 for that 15 mls. Hermes actually does the best job there, which surprises me. It’s like $250 or maybe more now for their 100 mls, but they have the discovery sets 4 for like $160. It’s a bargain! More of those.

  • March says:

Ha! I am solidly in the largest (and certainly most fragrant) group in each question…

    • Patty says:

Same! Okay, the poll thingie was fun. If you ever want to do one, let me know, I spent a small blog fortune to get the software to do it – it wont’ do Instagram, though, but it will make polls!! and surveys!
