Guerlain Aqua Allegoria Mandarine Basilic

(Early post today as car is misbehaving yet again and neighbour is going to look at it soon.)

Deep breathing. Son returning to uni today for final push (ie, last couple of essays and dissertation). Then, he’ll see. In any case, I’m fine when he’s here and when he’s there. It’s this in-between-leaving-again tiny bit which makes me twitchy. So, while waiting to take him to train I cleaned out a drawer in dresser to find two pairs of trousers I like but forgot about (really, no new clothes!) and sorted the stuff in the wooden tray on the kitchen table (which has been a repository since I moved back into the house 1.5 years ago – see before and after pics — while it may not look like a significant change, it is!).

(Before)

(After)

Most of the past week was glorious weather-wise – and the bits that weren’t glorious were at the very least fine. It was such a relief.

I planted two giant sunflowers out (of course, they aren’t giant yet …) and walked each day between things. Noted that the garden is looking a lot happier than it did last year at this time. Maybe it has recovered from what the builders did to it.

Got my hair coloured and cut. It’s now in a sweet spot of quite short but not lawn-mowered. The colour … well, as the hair is now too short for highlights, we’re into semi-permanent tints (which she had to paint on and which stained everything – ie, even my sheets overnight). My hair has moved into that salt and pepper stage during which it refuses to really go one way or the other (there was a woman getting her hair cut who was entirely silver and it was beautiful). So, we discussed, and I ended up with a blue wash – like a mid ocean blue. The salt hair picks that up and it is sort of subtle but not totally (like I’ve got blue silver highlights, which ain’t bad). I imagine people look at my hair and decide they can’t say anything because they’re not sure what would be fine and what would be mean (“did something happen to your hair?” – see pic of back of head; recent pics of me from the front have not been pleasing).

Anyway, haircut day was one of the beautiful warm days. I’d been testing Guerlain Mandarine Basilic (one of the samples in my Shalimar parfum order) and thought that would fit. I wasn’t having an ‘I need armour’ or ‘I need chic’ day. I just felt sort of fine (must have been the weather).

I don’t think I’ve sampled many AAs. I’m sure I’ve done some in the past but no memory.

Really enjoying this. Like really. It’s a perfect warmer weather fragrance for those of us who aren’t that partial to colognes.

Launched in 2007, notes include clementine, bitter orange, orange blossom, green tea, ivy, mandarin, basil, chamomile, sandalwood and amber.

The opening into the middle are my favourite parts of this and I’ve ended up re-spraying to make that last. This is a big, juicy fruity thing. A way to have citrus for those of us who can no longer eat oranges and grapefruit. In the opening I get orange, orange peel (that pith smell), basil and perhaps the green of ivy. It’s really really good – like bathing in it good.

As it opens up the basil comes to the fore but clearly it’s still a citrus scent. Maybe I smell a bit of chamomile.

The drydown is soft orange – more like orange creamsicle as the sharpness of the citrus is gone – underlaid by the sandalwood. It’s still quite nice but nothing near that top of juicy luxuriant fruit.

Not on the buy list but I’ll really enjoy my sample for however long it lasts.

that hair color is giving me LIFE! That is GORGEOUS!

  • Kathleen says:

I love your hair color! Lucky duckie to have healthy and thick hair! I agree with your review of Mandarine Basilic, I’ve sniffed it in the past and enjoyed it but not enough of my style for FB. The only AA I own is the Ylang Vanille from the past, now savoring the remains in the bottle. I also had Pamplelune in the past and loved it.

    • cinnamon says:

Will put Ylang Vanilla on the list for sniffing (Pampelune is already on it). Tx on hair colour. It’s very nice for spring 🙂

  • Dina C. says:

Cinnamon, I like the little sprinkles of blue throughout your hair. Those fantasy colors can be really fun. I think the Guerlain AAs are well done. I haven’t sniffed MB, but the note list sounds great! My favorite is Rosa Pop, which is roses, peonies, and red berries.

    • cinnamon says:

I have a peony. Will have to smell it this year when it blooms. Yes, the pops of something different can make us a lot more cheerful.

    Hey Cinnamon,
LOVE the Guerlain AA line and have quite a few bottle from the years gone by. The most modern one I own is Teazzura but Lys Soleia is by far my favourite.
That blue is fun, I love my pure white beard and am waiting for the rest to fall in line. Not that there’s so much of it anymore. Yours still looks thick and so healthy.
    Portia xx

I have another AA to sample. What I really need is another trip to a real city to go through a number of them at one go.

    • Alityke says:

Lys Soleia was so beautiful it should have been a main line or even high end exclusive line release!
Why did the d/c? I’ve collected a few preloved bottles & treat it like gold dust

  • Tom says:

I love the hair! I’ve gotten quite grey and kind of like it. And if I didn’t, tant pis, because I don’t have the time or money to keep up a dye job.

Feeling you on the car. They are bores when they go wrong..

I haven’t tried this one; I do love orange in perfumes so I may need to.

Looks like it might be a Guerlain week at the Posse: I’m doing 3 on Wednesday..

    • cinnamon says:

Tx on hair. It gets dyed every once in a while. I’m not huge on maintenance. This sort of thing grows out gracefully. Wonderful on more Guerlain. Look forward to it.

  • March says:

I love silver hair. Gray hair. Salt and pepper. All of it. I started going gray in college and colored it for decades, only stopped because I was tired of the upkeep and the dye on my pillows. My timing was perfect — it was when all the “cool kids” were dyeing their hair gray a decade or so ago, then I had people ask me where I was getting it colored! It’s kind of an ombre, still darker underneath and bright silver on top. I am toying with the idea of doing one fun streak in it, like magenta. Yours is beautiful.

    • cinnamon says:

The woman I saw at the salon had perfect silver hair in a chic bob. I am simply not that chic and my hair doesn’t seem like it’s going to be a uniform colour for a while. Yeah, I noticed that going grey with colour trend. Found it a bit confusing. A magenta streak sounds lovely.

    • Dina C. says:

      March,
My story is similar. I used to have dark brown hair. I started going grey when I was a teen. Started coloring when I was 21, and kept it up until 5 years ago. When I stopped my hair was pure silver. The transition took a couple years cause my hair is long. What a huge relief to no longer be constantly touching up my roots! Magenta would be fun.

    • Tom says:

I think I mentioned that my ex was a colorist and used me as his living dummy (no comments. please..) I was everything from black to platinum until I finally had him bring me to my dark ash blond (according to clairol) on his way out the door. I can get roots by the time I get home so keeping up something “natural” was too much: now that I am firmly silver I’ve been tossing around the idea of some blue or green streaks. In dyes that wash out. Don’t want to commit.

  • Alityke says:

I love that hair colour! I bet it brings out your eye colour.
I’m a big fan of a few AAs. Mandarin Basilic is one I had a 75ml bottle of but didn’t replace. From the citrus AAs my regular is Pamplelune. Gloriously sour grapefruit & cassis leaf. Guerlain have just hiked the AA prices & launched refillable bottles & refills as well as a refillable travel sizes. Perfect for summer refreshing on the go. None of the AAs have interesting dry downs. All the tiny budget goes on the opening & the mid notes

    • cinnamon says:

Hmmm, I have very dark brown eyes. I think I did see something about the refillable systems. Sort of helpful if there’s something you adore. I will need to try the Pamplelune.

  • AnnieA says:

This is a friend’s favourite “freshie”, as she calls it. It’s far too fleeting on me, but I have better milage with AA Limone Verde, which I was able to get in a swap. Liking the salty blue bit in the hair!

    • cinnamon says:

It’s more ‘juicy’ on me than fresh. Interestingly, as well, it is very long lived. Tx on hair. Am curious regarding how long the semi-permanent colour will last…
