We are Perfume Posse

Perfume “experts” here at the Posse?

If you had called us that in 2006 when we started reviewing perfume, we would have laughed.  Now?   Well, yeah, maybe.  Perfume Posse is a perfume review website dedicated to reviewing perfume, making fun of perfume, laughing at our obsession with perfume – and YOURS – and pretty much talking about it about every day.

We have been featured in:

We put perfume in the context of life.  It has no vocabulary because there is no language for the sense of smell.  Smell is emotion and memory, connected in the very base of your brain where you first feel.  When you smell something, you will ‘feel’ it before you will think anything.

For us to understand a perfume, we have to see if it brings up a memory, a wish, a dream, a desire, an emotion.  Without a narrative, it either smells good or smells bad or smells okay.  If you came in Googling a perfume you read about or used to love, look around, see if there are others that might resonate.

How do you know if you’re a Posse person?

  • You don’t mind the occasional more often than our moms would like swear word
  •  Referring to a perfume as skanky, even if you don’t know quite what that means, sounds like fun.
  • You think arguing with us about the perfumes we like and don’t like is entertaining.  We think it is too!
  • You don’t take this too seriously.  There’s a lot of things in life we need to take seriously – poverty, hunger, sex slavery, war, global warming.  Perfume?  Not one of them.  Don’t misunderstand!  We love perfume.  We also have perspective on how frivolous it is when so many in the world have nothing.
  • You don’t get terribly excited if we every now and then use a big font or a different font than Times New Roman… and sometimes in the same sentence. I know, it’s a radical concept on the internets, but we found out that Google Fonts lets us reach out beyond the 6 fonts we’ve been allowed for the last 8 years we’ve been writing this blog. We promise, the new will wear off and we’ll probably  —- naw, fonts help express a feeling, and we are feeeeeeeeeling people.   I’m lying, I have no idea when we’ll get over it or if we will.
  • You don’t get offended if one of us talks about travel, makeup, something we bought or ! gasp ! a cosmetic procedure we had.   Don’t ask, I had no idea people actually find something like that offensive, but apparently they do.   If you do, this blog may  not be the right fit for you.  Doesn’t mean you aren’t welcome – you are – but don’t expect us to change.  We ‘yam what we yam’!
  • You have your own opinion about fragrance and what you like. If you love Pink Sugar or Old Spice? You don’t give a fig if we diss it, you just keep on loving it and tell us we are perfume neanderthals with no appreciation for fragrance classics and should try it again.  And you know what?  We just might!

Our Authors

Patty White owns and is Managing Editor of Perfume Posse and lives in the Rocky Mountains.  She was born and raised in Kansas and works for a company involved in the television industry.  Her perfume exploits stretch around the world,  looking for the next niche product (which she frequently gets her hands on before almost anyone else!) as well as exploring fragrances that are locally available.   She is also a founding partner in Surrender to Chance, a perfume sample and decant business (formerly a partner in The Perfumed Court).  Surrender to Chance and Patty’s personal, huge perfume collection is the source of almost all of the fabulous giveaways we do, and we do try to note that in the posts as full disclosure for readers.

March Moore lives in the Washington, D.C. area, and her perfume interests are pretty broad — from downmarket stuff (check out our Drugstore Cowgirls post!) to impossible-to-find vintage extraits.  She smells it so you don’t have to.  If you don’t want to.  But if you want to, honey, just get your credit card out and get busy, because what’s a better waste of time than perfume?

Anita Berlanga is really a  benevolent despot from Jupiter, though she now exists as the owner of a  Midwestern manufacturing company as well as continuing her marketing/event planning business for the luxury goods industries.  She has a heart and attitude as big as an ocean to match her love of vintage Guerlain Mitsouko and Dior Diorling.  Equal parts siren and earth mother, starting your day talking about perfume (or handbags – she loves handbags)  with Anita is a treat.

Tom Pease writes about cars and perfume and lives in the “industrial triangle” area of Beverly Hills, CA.

Ann is a former newspaper editor and fashion writer who has been a fragrance lover since she was young, but stumbled into the rabbithole in a big way in 2007 and has been happily falling farther down ever since. Tea and lipstick are her other passions. She loves chatting and connecting with other fragrance fans because perfume people are simply the best: smart, funny, kind and generous.

Portia Turbo is the Australian born and bred Hostess and Producer of AustralianPerfumeJunkies with no perfume credibility except a deep obsession and years of collecting, aside from some” squirt bitch work in my youth”. Fragrance writer for GayExpressNZ and Guest Poster on Perfume Posse. Just quietly she’s a filthy great Drag Queen and loving it.  You can also Catch Portia in the original movie ….Priscilla Queen of the Desert!!!!”

Free Stuff Disclosure

Hey, we like stuff!!  We’re happy to have you send us stuff in the hopes we’ll review it.

In support of the FTC ruling on disclosures about free product, this is our policy on free stuff –   We get some perfume samples sent to us by perfume companies and their public relations departments.   We promise no review – either good or bad, if any at all – no matter how we came by product.

We do try to remember to disclose the provenance of a sample if we can remember where it came from.  Usually we have had a perfume for a while because we bought a bottle of it, or we swapped with someone else to get it, or we bought the sample or begged a friend to send us something.  Mostly we want disclose if we got the sample from the manufacturer or their public relations company.

If you are a perfume company, we are happy to have you send us samples, but the above policy is ironclad. Just click on the Drop Us a Note to get information on where to send things.

We also have the occasional link in our text (usually Amazon) that includes referral fees paid to us if you wind up buying something after clicking on the link, which is normally about 4-6% of the sale.

We also run some advertising on the right side of the blog that also only gives us any money if you click on them and then later buy something. We always appreciate our readers hitting those links to Amazon and other online perfume stores when you are already planning to buy something because it helps support our website.

Advertisers

If you are an advertiser, we do take advertising if space is available and your ad is a good fit for our blog – beauty, perfume or luxury goods related.  Please click on the Drop Us a Line on the Navigation bar (up there) to get a rate card.  Our daily readership numbers in the thousands, is highly educated and dedicated to perfume and beauty.

We do not accept sponsored posts, but we will consider original content guest posts from other perfume, beauty or fashion bloggers with established blogs.

ISIPCA puts online the second version of its MOOC, in English version, on November 17th: “From the art to smell to the sensory marketing”

A MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) is an on-line course, free and open to all. It is a new intelligent way and collaborative to develop its knowledge, while being connected. More than 5,500 people had joined the first one, in French language. This course addresses the professionals of the sectors of the perfume, the marketing, the luxury but also the young people, the high school students and the students in chemistry, in pharmacy, in food-processing industry, in biology… in fact, to the people who want to learn and to discover our practices.

The perfume is a part of the memory of yesterday and today
For centuries, the perfume occupies a favored place in civilizations, sometimes connected with the sacred rites, the symbol of membership in a social class, a remedy against the problems of the body or the soul or still the sensual finery, it crossed ages. But what hides behind this seeming simplicity? The perfume is at the heart of our society, where the sensory universe is more and more exploited. The sense of smell which is our most innate sense, delicately makes a way.
This MOOC suggests to the learners widening their knowledge, discovering what are the actors and the factors which are taken into account in the olfactive dimension. It will be suggested to the learners experimenting the processes of creation of a flavor through various exercises and estimating their own knowledge and skills in olfaction.

    What is its program?
We speak olfaction, science, perfume, knowledge, aroma, luxury, marketing, .. and many other subjects so fascinating there. The registration is opened from September 15th. He is structured in 4 sequences, on a duration of 4 weeks, from November 17th till December 15th, 2017, with 4 evaluations. In the term of this MOOC, it is proposed to the interested participants, the online paying certificate attributed at the end of a questionnaire. This test (realized in a limited time) will be watched online, by a specialized examiner, beside of whom the participants will have to book an appointment between December 18th, 2017 and January 12th, 2018.

At the end of the MOOC, the best learner will be the winner in a free participation in the Summer School ISIPCA 2018: link towards the platform https://www.fun-mooc.fr/

Hello,I couldn’t find your drop us a note link for your address to send samples for review.

I am the creator of NadiaZ, and am contacting you as I believe we share the same love for natural niche perfumes, luxury and art. I would be very glad to send you samples for your reviews on my artworks.I am already listed on fragrantica http://www.fragrantica.com/designers/Nadia-Z.html and soon will be on beauty almanach.
NadiaZ is the first natural Haute parfumerie and Cosmetics brand made in Switzerland with indigenous plants and unique sculpture pieces, each piece is unique, customizable and in limited edition of about 300 per year. They are at the intersection of Art, Perfume and Therapy. Please have a look at my website http://www.nadiaz.ch
My cosmetics also focus on people who place their health and wellbeing first, having sensitive skins requiring trustable natural ingredients.

NadiaZ goal is to elevate perfume into the world of Art while promoting indigenous knowledge and plants, to enable the communities to protect biodiversity and their environment while getting economic opportunities. After more than a decade of humanitarian missions, I built a strong network of communities all over the world, which is why for example I designed the bottles using Shona Stone Sculptures from Zimbabwe.

I am a physicist and humanitarian worker and I am building my company without external investors and I mainly rely on appreciation and online medias for the visibility of my brand without any of the marketing budget commercial companies have.
My workshop is near Lausanne in Switzerland where I store rare indigenous plants and it is open to visitors.
I am looking forward to hear from you. Best regards

was the shop on Geary? I believe that I was there about 4-5- years ago.

      • Terrie says:

The Shop closed in 2011 I believe.
Henry Jacques Parfum house in France, which has made … Henri Baumann, 210 Post St., Suite 511, San Francisco. This shop specialized in one on one consulting although it may have had many creations you might be able to purchase. I was personally never there the bottles I have were a gift from a very dear friend that passed away years ago.

        Thank you for your reply

I have just bougt mouchoir de monsieur edt from guerlain, a really nice fresh fragrance, but i’m reading some comments stating that it is better to use it during winter times. Can i have your kind and professional recommendation about that please?

I am one of those people who get
sneezing from just one whiff of fragrance that is too strong , but I also want
to wear a fragrance . I know some others might have the same issue , and
wondered if you could recommend some perfumes with a /subtle/low
sillage , inoffensive pleasant , fresh scent – Thanks Marco

    • Jen C. says:

Marco, the only advice I have, I have some allergies too, and cannot predict which fragrances will trigger them, is plan your first try of any new fragrance about a half hour before your shower. You might end up washing off something really good the first time you try it, but if it triggers you you can just move your shower up and get rid of it. For me, it’s usually the top notes that give me trouble, I will know immediately if I’m going to have a problem.

I forget sometimes, and try something new in the car, but no, have patience!

That being said, I think you should start with high end perfumes, the drugstore perfumes tend to be a little heavier-handed with the chemicals.

And a really safe thing to do would be start with something like Maroma Attar of Roses, or another Maroma oil-based fragrance, if you have a Whole Foods near you. You won’t get perfume-like endurance, but that’s what I retreat to when the Spring Allergies hit – something quiet just for me.

Google all-natural perfumes there are many, like Roxana Illuminated Perfume, My Daughter natural fragrances, Aftelier, Tsi-Lang – they can be expensive, but if you’re trying to avoid allergic reactions, expensive is good, IMHO.

      Luck!

Hi, I was just reading ‘A Week of Tauer Perfumes’ written by Hester and found that there was no place for new comments. I particularly enjoyed the article as I am also from S.Africa and enjoyed the familiar references! I don’t know of any local perfume blogs so it was great to hear from a Tauer enthusiast living in the same country I do.

  • Priscilla says:

I discovered your interesting and exciting site while feverishly searching for information on Jungle Gardenia by Tuvache. I first used it when I was 16 yrs. old, and having just turned 61 yrs. young, I crave the smell and feeling this perfume gave me so many years ago. Yes, I must be traveling back in time, in my head, but it’s become an obsession for me to smell and wear this perfume again. If anyone knows a reputable person, store, site to buy the ” original” or obtain even a sample of Tuvache Jungle Gardenia I would be most appreciative.

    • Musette says:

Priscilla – I just saw this comment! Go over to Surrender to Chance (www.surrendertochance.com) – last time I looked (which was a few weeks ago) they had vintage Tuvache! It has been reintroduced as well – and is very close to the original.

Does anyone know where can i get Les Bains Du Marais MUSC BLANC Huile de soin Beauty fine oil? I have been trying to find this for a couple of years. They still have different fragrances but not MUSC BLANC. I bought a couple of bottles several years ago but cannot seem to locate it anywhere. I love the clean and fresh fragrance.
