En Passant

Got a request in comments to jot off a couple of notes about Frederic Malle’s En Passant.

The best way I can describe it, for me, is it is like lying on a pile of  freshly harvested wheat holding a little bouquet of lilacs. Or my mother in the kitchen baking bread, and I come in from outdoors with some lilacs in my hand. It just feels like home.  Those are memories of my youth.

The lilac note starts off pretty strong and sweet, but that really doesn’t last long, though the lilac note is there constantly, just gets joined with that yeasty smell. I don’t notice much of the other notes, the cucumber and something else, except they give it a sort of ephemeral feel, keeping it from being too strong, too real, so it just constantly feels like a nose memory of another time, just a little out of your reach.

This is an amazing spring/summer scent. I hadn’t paid any attention to it much over winter, but it really comes into its own when the weather starts warming.

I think maybe next week we’ll work on our favorite spring/summer scents. My mind is definitely turning to those now.

CW, if you love lilacs and you aren’t horrified by a little wheaty smell, you should adore En Passant.

buddysmall.jpgAnd here’s Buddy, the Wonder Dog. He’s the World’s most joyous dog, leaping and bounding like he was a kangaroo, but he is so sweet and lovable and just a rotten thief who steals everything, raids the trash can, snarfs along the countertop. He’s just rotten to the core, but I just adore him, he’s my best friend.

Cait, biopic? Naw, just a normal Kansas farm childhood, but there are moments of it that are just forever memories in my mind and and for smells. I’m still looking for the smell of stray and baby kittens. 🙂

  • Cait says:

P.S. Buddy the wonderdog is adorable 😡
I think he’d get along with Roquefort and Tallulah the Alaskan westies. They are jumping for springtime joy right now, which means they need lots of baths. It’s breakup here.

    Dear Patty,
The image of lying in a pile of freshly harvested wheat holding a little bouquet of lilacs has got to be one of the most lyrical images I’ve ever heard. The idea that you’ve really done that is even better. With that and the rat money I am thinking biopic on Peppermint Patty sounds like a great idea. Thank you. You’ve reawakened my desire to wear En Passant for new reasons.

En Passant is on my lemming list – a Holy Grail if you will, right up there with Carnal Flower. If I win the lottery, a large package from Frederic Malle will be winging my way…. 😡

  • Patty says:

CW, I do think you absolutely should try this. It will likely be in my sample giveaway for next week, so stay tuneD!

Buddy is a love. That was taken a few months ago, when he was younger and thinner. Too many biscuits are ruining his trim figger. 🙂 He’s hugging you back now– well, he’s mostly sleeping, but he’s thinking about it.:d

Marina, great idea! See, great minds do think alike. It’s 80 degrees here, and it feels like spring/summer scent time!

I’ll be working on mine over the weekend, but I don’t know when I’ll be done with them, maybe Wednesday.

Weird, I don’t find it melancholy like Apres L’Ondee. It’s an interesting perfume, for sure, and I agree it has to be on a top 20 list to be smelled.

Thank you for your replies! En Passant sounds like one to try for sure – especially this time of year.

The dog is sooo adorable! In addition to being a perfume junkie, I am a crazy dog lady (though I haven’t any of my own). I want to hug Buddy through my computer screen!

    Patty, March,
I am posting my Top 10 Scents This Spring on Monday, it would be fun if we all did that next week, not necessarily on the same day, just some time next week. What do you think?

  • March says:

I don’t have much to add to Patty’s description except to say I don’t think of En Passant as a lilac fragrance; it’s more a photograph of a place in time. I get rain, and wet fence, and the cucumber comes and goes. The other thing I will say is that I find it very melancholy (that is not a criticism BTW), but I have seen it described by many as joyful. I think if I had a Top 20 List of Fragrances Everyone Should Smell, this might be on it.
