Mona di Orio Nuit Noire – Best Perfume for?

Mona di Orio Nuit Noire – part skank and part lady.

Who does it remind me of?  A perky little cheerleader dressed in cashmere twinsets who keeps flipping up her skirt at the boys to get them to go behind the bleachers with her when she thinks the teachers and her parents aren’t paying attention, that’s Mona di Orio’s Nuit Noire. I knew that girl, and just about the time I thought I nailed it down that she was a slut and stealing boyfriends, she’d smooth her skirt down, smile pretty and take homemade chocolate chip cookies to the Long Term Care Unit before morning mass. Yeah, that’s right, that girl. As much as I wanted to dislike her, I just couldn’t — could only admire her panache in carrying off that duality. Nuit Noire doesn’t change as she sits on the skin, but she just has two faces — just when I think she’s a fairly innocent thing, she just gets nasssssty. Notes of orange flower, cardamom, ginger, orange guinee, olibian, cinnamon, tuberose, sandalwood, clove, cedarwood, amber, leather, musk and tonka bean… and the smut note is a bonus. Mona di Orio Nuit Noire has been discontinued and is no longer available.

Best Perfume for – Always a lady, soft and kind, reminds you of Miss Melanie from Gone With the Wind, but if you poke her a little, she turns around with her glowing red eyes, fangs bared and hisses at you… that’s JAR Jarling. Elegant, beautiful, slightly evil — I forgot just how much. This thing is so gorgeous, it needs its own planet to live on so the other fragrances don’t bother it. Now, I realize not everyone feels that way, but it’s probably the most comforting almond smell I’ve run across, but there is that slightly malevolent undercurrent that I find in most of the JARs, and I don’t mean that as a bad thing, that gives it more, um, spark! It doesn’t change as much as the other JARs do in the drydown. The reviews I ran across on MUA and POL called it all sorts of bad names, like baby lotion drydown and soap but most of the JARs react strongly to the person, so I think what I love, and so does Luca (throwing out his name so y’all don’t think I’m just completely balmy in my love for this), may turn into something disgustingly powdery on someone else. Now, powder is Kryptonite to me, so I’m totally not getting the powder — I get a lot more almond and something spicy, a little licoricey and then there’s some floral later on, some people have said Lilac, and that sounds about right, it does have a little bit of an En Passanty feel to it. Available from Bergdorf Goodman for an astronomical sum plus a dollar.

What is superfun is having these two on at the same time – Mona di Orio Nuit Noire and JAR Jarling. I don’t know whether to polish my halo or chug some Green Jesus Juice* and ditch my panties and dignity.

Draw me a picture, draw me a beeline to win! One of these days I have to try JAR — only problem, I don’t think they’re sold at all in Miami, just NYC, right? Maybe Paris? Bah, humbug!

  • CindyN says:

    Patty,
Everclear! Just brought me back to high school/college days, which BTW is why we used the everclear–designed not to remember. LOL

Wow, it’s 4:30 am, the gingersnaps were callin’ after a resless night and I am behind in commentville! Powder=evil yuck, yes. Green Juice I seem to recall on moonlit evenings in Boulder on the roof of my dorm….
Please sigh me up! I love putting different things on each arm and seeing how they get along (or not…)

  • hausvonstone says:

yikes, what a flashback. everclear n’ koolaid. i recall purple/black. and i can never go within 100 feet of Peach Schnapps again. Then there was Bartles n’ Jaymes wine coolers. And Kaluha dumped nto Arby’s Milkshakes. Ah, high school. please enter me in the drawing…thanks! also, on this ‘hung-over’ note, I wonder if you could do a post sometime on WAKE UP!!!! scents. Things you can put on in the morning to clear your brain. The only one I have in this category is L’Occitane Verbena – it’s like a green slap in the nostrils…

  • Steve H says:

    Happy (almost) Holidays to All,

Please enter me into the drawing as well.

  • Cheezwiz says:

    Hi Patty!

Please include me in your draw – ESPECIALLY if the adorable Buddy chooses. Give Buddy a smooch on the forehead for me regardless. (Do you make him wear antlers for Christmas?)

I laughed at your description of the “Cocktail” specialty of your youth. Ours were made up of the dregs of whatever we could find in the parents’ liquor cabinet. Bleccch :-&

  • Lucy says:

Can’t seem to summon the nerve to experience the experience of the JARs. At least, not yet. Malevelolent . . . AND comforting? Hmmmm.

Please include me in your drawing! Thanks!

  • patchamour says:

    Hi Patty,

LOL at this post. Hadn’t thought about spolioli in years and years. I think it’s mentioned in an old Doo-Wop song, but can’t remember which one. Lost some brain cells on that.

Please enter me in the drawing. Thank you.

  • minette says:

so now i have to go back and find my nuit noire sample and sniff it again, cuz i don’t remember it getting naaaassty in any way on my skin. would’ve liked that very much. maybe it will cooperate this time.

please enter me in your drawing, too! thank you!

  • Madelyn E says:

I will check out Jars at Bergdorf’s when I return to NY this W-E. tried the Golconda -(Marie-Helene de Rothschild’s favorite )Very heavy on the carnation – elegant and sophiticated . Hello to all !

  • Skye H. says:

    Hi Patty,

Green Jesus Juice & Hunch Punch usually equal amnesia for me too, whether that’s the everclear or just my desire not to remember what insane thing I did while flying high is up for debate 😉

Please enter me in the drawing!

    Skye

  • Camilla says:

    Patty,
Just getting back to your response after a loooong day. I’m disappointed in the whole Profumum line. I hate to say it but they strike me as kind of … tacky, maybe? The best of my new trove of samples from Lucky Scent were all from Parfumerie Generale. Especially Aomassai. And the Musc Maori, like buttah…:)

  • Elle says:

Dusan’s comments had me lmao! Such memories of college.
Patty, I’ve never tried to make an edp w/ one of my Yosh scents. Since I’m a low sillage sl*t, they work for me as oils. I bet you could, though.
And I’m going to have to spend some time thinking about what girl Diamond Waters would be.

  • sariah says:

Hi Patty – please enter me in the drawing. Still have yet to sniff a JAR, silly me.

  • Dana says:

Please enter me in the drawing. Thanks!

  • Lauren says:

I loved the reviews of Nuit Noire and Jarling.

Please have a chug of Green Jesus Juice and enter me in the drawing!

    Thanks!

  • gingele says:

Oh yes, do sign me up, please!

And can you fill up this to-go cup with some of that there Jesus Juice. Thanks.

  • Karen says:

HA HA! I see that another Karen has entered the drawing. Well, if there’s any confusion, I’m the Karen who used to wear Army combat boots and run around the woods near Lampertheim, Germany, playing war games!! Please enter me in the drawing. And I have tried Jagermeister! There was one soft drink in Germany called “Lift” that was horrid, but actually grew on you. It tasted like really strong lemonade with a healthy dose of baking soda added to it. At the end of my tour of duty, I actually liked it.
I, too, love Miss Melanie. She was a true lady. Scarlett always “planned to be a lady” but always put it off because it was too inconvenient. She idolized her mother who was a lady. She always wanted to be like her mom.
Catholic girls as sluts? Oh dear. But I was really surprised by my husband’s story how several couples at Heelan Catholic High School in Sioux City, Iowa rented (individual) hotel rooms after the Senior Prom. I had to put in about “individual” (each couple had their own room) because I didn’t want any dear readers to blow a gasket, and think “orgy” or “group sex”.

  • carmencanada says:

Mine was ouzo, straight from the bottle, brought back from Greece by a friend.
Still feel a bit iffy about licorice 28 years later.
Please enter me in the draw, I’ve been a real good girl, pretty close to a bloody saint actually, in a Betty Boop meets Joan of Arc kind of a way. I deserve all the goodies I can get my hands on!

  • Rachel says:

Oh, a pack of christmas goodies !! Please include me in the drawing? Would love to sample stuff from your stash!
    Thanks so much!

  • cinnamontoast says:

Please enter me in the drawing (I’m in London — does that matter?).

Nuit Noire is pure ivory soap on me but I love your description of the girl who is true to herself.

  • yellowcedar says:

Except for the powder, the red-eyed Jarling sounds very intriguing. Please enter me in the drawing, tia.

  • evilpeony says:

LOL at the slut in twinsets… heck, most of the girls at the catholic high school i went to were just like that…

please sign me up for the special xmas drawing! thanks and hugs!

  • Patty says:

Josey and Mmarie — Nuit Noire is normally not something I would love, but it really is a lovely dirty little thing.

  • Patty says:

Tom — who Else? Luscious Cargo. I had the name in when I first posted cuz I was madder’n hell when I went to bed last night, but pulled it this morning because it seemed too self-indulgent.

I’m just irritated that she actually agreed to do the right thing, and then just won’t do it, and now won’t respond to phone calls or e-mails at all. It’s taken too much time to deal with, and every day I have to get up and think about it, I get mad all over again because now I have to call my credit card company and start a chargeback and call L’Artisan just because I’m reallly irritated at what she’s doing.

and … and…and I could go on it’s a long story, e-mail me if you want details or have your own bad story.

  • Patty says:

MC — put you in the drawing.

    Dusan! :d

  • Ina says:

I tried Jarling at Bergdorf’s at the Sniffa, and I was instantly smitten by its soft, powdery effect. However, the drydown turned completely vile, and for the life of me would not come off. Diamong Waters and Golconda still top the list for me.

  • Patty says:

Karen and Gaia, I put you in the drawing.

Gaia, I still haven’t come up with a girl for Diamond Water yet. 🙂

  • Patty says:

ABsolutely, Justine. I’m still so glad you went and had a great experiences. I’m shocked about Close Your Eyes being the one! 🙂

  • Patty says:

    Will do, Tigs.

Blue lagoon and chocolate cake…. oh,lord!

  • Patty says:

Oh, Kuri, you must go! They really are nice at the JAR in Bergdorf Goodman and so welcoming, and even if they weren’t, I would brave any snootiness just to sniff.

  • Patty says:

Maria, the only two almondy scents that I’m fond of are RAhat and Castelbajac and Jarling, and that’s pretty much it!

  • Patty says:

S — JAR is for Joel Arthur Rosenthal. He’s a very ritzy jeweler that created these fragrances

  • Patty says:

Rachael, I put you in the draw, and Merry Christmas to you!!

  • Patty says:

Jamie, Eliza and Terri, I put you all in the draw, thanks!!!

  • Patty says:

Julia, bad customer service is horrible, yes, especially when they agree to do the right thing and then just simply fail to follow through. I’m still just so torched about it! 🙂

I’ll put you in the draw!

  • Josey says:

    Ooo please enter me! :d

Normally I wouldn’t have given Nuit Noire a second thought, but your analogy is irresistable! 😕

  • Patty says:

Will do, Jill! All the JARs must be sniffed!

  • violetnoir says:

    I love this post.

    That is all!

    Hugs!

  • Patty says:

Marina, if it hadn’t been for Melanie keeping Ashley away from Scarlett, I would have hated her more! 🙂

  • Dusan says:

Erin – LOL at the antithesis to a perfume blog! My buddies, on the other hand, were off their heads most of the time so I doubt they even remember what I did for them. I certainly won’t!

  • Patty says:

Anna — grape? Wow, you guys were so bold! Loss of memory is a blessing for teenagers. 🙂

    Put you in the drawing!

  • mmariecrys says:

    Off to stalk Nuit Noir…

please enter me in the drawing as well. Thanks!

  • Patty says:

Sharon — yes, going commando has to be done from time to time. Entered you in the drawing!

  • Patty says:

Dusan — well, I was never one to sneak off under the bleachers either, though I did do my share of macking at keg parties on the river. 🙂

  • Patty says:

BB – I think you’d like the Nuit Noire. I like my skank served up with a mask on top. 🙂

Red? Oh, we did that a couple of times and then switched to green. Much easier to disguise the stains on the carpet from the parents.

  • Patty says:

Christine, yes, powder is the kiss of death for a perfume for me, too. I find it a lot more almondy than powdery, though almond has a powdery component to it, just one that I don’t really think of as powdery. I think what I just said make no sense. 🙂

I’ll enter you in the draw.

  • Tigs says:

Dusan: Not sure whether to applaud or chastize that last post – it’s kind of the antithesis perfume blog post. I totally get where you’re coming from, though. In my case, clean-up and nursing duties were good practice for motherhood. I’m sure, in your case, they just earned you the everlasting gratitude of your buddies – they certainly should!

  • LarissaH says:

Love your posts – please enter me in the drawing as well!

  • Deborah says:

Patty, Please sign me up for the drawing.

  • tmp00 says:

So where did you get the lousy service?

And yes, please enter me in the drawing..

  • Dusan says:

Erin – I know the feeling all too well. Usually it was me at the parties who cleaned up after other people’s mess. Your chocolate cake & blue lagoon mix sounds heavenly compared to my efforts to clean up a barfed-up bath tub, what with huge chunks of half-digested food that just refused to go through the grate! 🙁
Actually, I’m a solid drinker too, proud that I always manage to keep the drinks down. There was, however, this one time when I was twelve, visiting relatives in a small Croatian town – I can’t remember how (well, I can actually :-)) ), but I ended up in a ditch just beside the railroad, in deep snow with pants around my ankles and a blissful smile on my face…
Okay, this has got to be theee most revealing and gross-out comment I’ve ever written =))

  • M.C. says:

I would like to enter the drawing!

  • Eliza J says:

I finally had my first JAR experience. I ordered a decant of the Diamond Water from a seller on Ebay and I almost wish that I hadn’t. It is so intoxicating and when I am wearing it I can’t seem to stop smelling my wrist. Actually, I was at a stop light yesterday and I had it on and was sniffing away. Hand to nose. I am sure that the person next to me thought I was a bit crazy. So, I am excited to try Jarling. Not to get too off topic but I always wondered if Diamond Water was named at all after the whole paradox of Diamond-Water. Not to get too philisophical but it is interesting to think of it in that sense. We all absolutely need water to live and it costs virtually nothing where as diamonds, we don’t necessarly need at all and the cost is so high.

  • I wonder what kind of girl is my beloved Diamond Water. Whoever she is, I want to be her.

And, I’d love to be in the drawing.

  • Karen G says:

I have not tried Jarling, but my favourite almond scent is Montale Amandes Orientale. Lots of vanilla in there too. Actually more foody than I usually like, but i find it comforting.

I would love to be included in the Christmas draw. Thanks much!

  • Justine says:

The boutique (and Robert, really, he was the bomb) was a highlight of my NY trip and I never would have done it without your blog Patty, so thank you!

Lets see, it was the “Close Your Eyes” that smelled just breathtaking on me, another JAR that most people tend to not sing the praises of, but on me it was both earthy and slightly floral and it just unfolded as it sat on my skin. Aftwards, Robert brought out the tray of clip on flower petal earrings and I tried on several pairs of those. The whole experience was too wonderful for words. Really.

I’d love to be included in the drawing!

  • Tigs says:

Please include me in the drawing, Patty. Pretty please? The worst clean-up I ever had – I’m actually a pretty solid drinker for someone so small, so I was always the person who got called in to save someone from dying in their own fluids – was blue lagoon and chocolate cake. Not recommended.

  • kuri says:

I’d love to be included in the drawing. I’m off to NY at the end of this month. Perhaps I shall brave the JAR boutique.

  • Maria B. says:

I’m so out of it that I had to Google JAR. Joel Arthur Rosenthal I can understand, even if he doesn’t like it. :d

Are there other good almond fragrances I should check out? Almond is one of the most comforting scents. A friend of mine gets lost in a Burt’s Bees hand cream.

Please enter me in the holiday drawing–and thank you, Patty, for offering it.

  • S says:

Is JAR Jarling a play on words on Darjeeling? Or Jaja binks? 😕

  • rachael says:

    I love Miss Melanie.
As for the drawing, can’t say no to an offer like that! I’d love to be included. Merry Christmas to you, and Happy Holidays to everyone.

  • Terri Stoddard says:

I would love to be entered in the drawing. Your site is honey to me, the bee.

    Terri

  • Eliza J says:

I would also love to be included in the drawing. Thank you!

  • Jamie says:

Please include me in your drawing.

    Thanx!

  • Julia says:

Bad customer service is just bad business. Weird that some companies still doesn’t get that and keep gnarling about minor issues that they could easily resolve without much work.

Can I be included in the christmas drawing please? *enter santa-smiley here*

    /Julia

  • jill says:

    Must try JARLING somewhere sometime.
In the meantime, please enter me in your drawing, thanks!

  • Marina says:

I am going to have nightmares tonight about the sweet looking lady with red eyes. I actually always hated the Melanie b*tch. Such a goody two shoes. :d

  • Anna says:

I seem to recall Grape Kool-Aid, but my memory may be a bit hazy…
So happy to hear of great customer service. It sometimes feels like a minefield out there!
If you would please enter me in the drawing, I would very much appreciate it.

  • Sharon says:

    Hello Patty,

Sometimes ditching your panties can be a good thing! Loved your review today.

Please enter me in the drawing!

  • Dusan says:

    Sometimes…
I wish we had cheerleaders in my time… Naw, I probably wouldn’t have been the type who sneaks off with them under the bleechers… how pathetic am I?

  • BBliss says:

That Nuit Noire sounds intriguing – duality is not a bad thing in perfumes – actually, I prefer some movement in what they do – just like people, keeps things interesting!

Please throw my name in for the Special Surprise Draw – sounds fun!

PS Our “Jesus Juice” was just called “Trash Can Punch” – clever, huh? – was always red – a REAL mistake for those that drank it all night. Disgusting clean-up:-&

  • Christine says:

Jarling sounds fantastic…I wonder if I would get the dreaded powder. Ah the wonders of skin chemistry.

Also, please enter me in the drawing. Hooray drawing!

  • Patty says:

Thanks, Camilla. Have you liked any of the Profumums yet? I liked several, but the price point on them is just staggering for what they are. They strike me as more like the Heeley… fine scents, but totally not worth the stratospheric price.

If you ever get near NYC, you must sniff the JARs. I always worry about them, because I think most of them aren’t that buyable for wearing, but, Lord, I love to sniff all of them.

I do need to snag Golconda one of these days. Poivre really fills my carnation slot, so I’ve never been in a hurry to get it, but it really is beautiful and probably the most wearable of all of them.

  • Patty says:

Emily, I’m delighted to put you in the drawing, thanks!!

  • Patty says:

L — I tried the Lux and Carnation first and really hated them, so I was surprised that I really, really like Nuit Noire, and it is addictive.

got White Flowers, which is wonderful. I still wnat to get Ginger Ciao and Sotille too. I think with those three,I’d be happy. So have you ever tried to cut them and make an EDP with perfumer’s alcohol? I’m going to get my chemistry set going in the next week or so with a teeny amount and see what I can do.

    [-x

  • Camilla says:

Patty, you are so funny. Your post made me smile, which is no small feat at this time of the morning. I love your description of Jar’s Jarling. Speaking of almond, I just received my sample of Profumum’s Confetto yesterday. Almond, anise, vanilla … from the description at LS I thought I’d love it, but so far it hasn’t impressed. Jarling sounds much more intriguing. Sadly, we don’t have much in the way of niche fragrance houses ’round these parts and I won’t likely get the chance to smell it anytime soon. So glad we have you do the dirty work for us. Another Jar I’m dying to sample is Golconda.
    Have a wonderful day.

  • Patty says:

March — Spolioli? How did you manage to say that when you were AFU?

Never had Harvey’s Bristol, but the one I can’t drink anymore is Schnapps, Peppermint, Peach, Cinnamon, doesn’t matter.

And Tequila… I love Tequila, but it hates me with a passion

  • Patty says:

You bet, Kathy. One of my best friends in high school made this one drink when she was totally ass out drunk, she put some sloe gin (kind of cherry’ish flavored?) in a can of beer. Back then my maiden name was White, so everyone just called me White. She was hunting me down, Hey, White, you have to try this, it’s a slooooooeeeeee beer.

I took one sip and heaved. OMG, nothing worse in the world.

  • Patty says:

You bet, Chaya! My favorite movie is “Arsenic and Old Lace.” I need to figure out what those wicked ladies would have worn, but one of them might have worn Jarling. Anyway, it’s the duality of the movie of their flawless manners and kindness while poisoning their guests. Just cracks me up every time I watch it.

  • Patty says:

    Absolutely, Jo!

  • Patty says:

D — Oh, you took a pass on JAR? Oh, even if you don’t find one to love, they really are just so interesting to smell. If you get anywhere close to one again, insist on going, knock people over if you have to. 🙂

  • Patty says:

    Alica, you’re in the drawing.

Lee — I live to flash you, and if there are visits to D.C. and England, I’ll be just tossed if I can’t go (practicing made-up British words) 🙂

  • Leopoldo says:

Would love to console you over your coffee – heck, i could even buy you one. Edinburgh in May – perfect.

My politesse is a bit unpolished I’m afraid – I’m a little too low-bred and déclassé to achieve it with any real effect…

  • Emily says:

I’d love to be entered in the drawing, thanks!! 🙂

  • Elle says:

Nuit Noire has become one of my fav scents of all time. I could mainline the stuff. It smells of Central American bodegas to me. And, yep, great smut note. 🙂
I definitely get licorice in Jarling, but it’s a minty licorice. W/out doubt, the most interesting almond scent I’ve ever smelled. *Love* the comparison to Miss Melanie.
You got another Yosh? Which one? *Adore* Yosh scents and Yosh herself if wonderful.

  • March says:

P — we called it Spoly-oli (not sure of the spelling), I think it was a gallon of Everclear plus whatever. Makes Jagermeister look like Dom Perignon … but I think my worst drunk was Harvey Bristol Cream. (Shudder.)

That is just the PERFECT description of that slutty NN.

Leopoldo — I’m hoping to be in London for a few days next May (I’m wending my way down from Edinburgh, did I spell that right?), maybe we could hook up — in a non-American sense — and you could demonstrate the cruel/polite thing and console me while I sob into my $12USD coffee about the brutal exchange rate…

  • Kathy says:

    Hi,

I’d love to be included in the drawing. Our Jesus Juice was always purple, but I’m a bit hazy on the details too.

    Thanks!

  • chayaruchama says:

    :d
Patty, my dear- add my name ,if you would !
[Miss Melanie, of all things, lol…]

Leo, I’m quite familiar with that frosty politesse you Brits have perfected, masquerading as courtesy [aka, thinly veiled contempt !]- my sister-in-law has her degree in it, I think. But maybe, hers is simply rabid anti-Semitism…

    I love the duality scents,too.
    Girly with fangs !
    Gingham with stliettos !
    Lace ‘n’ leather…

    Fan me, someone, please…

  • Jo says:

Oh please include me in your drawing! What a nice Christmas suprise that would be.
    J\

  • dinazad says:

I *never* could resist a surprise package offer, so please enter me in the drawing. As for the scents: drat! I just knew I should’ve insisted on going to the JAR boutique last time I had the chance. I gave in to the majority, and where did that leave me? Clueless as to their fragrances. Sighhh…. I SO love naughty-nice scents.

  • Leopoldo says:

Please include me in your draws, but don’t feel you need to flash your drawers at me. Well, you can if you want, sex kitten. Hell, I’ve changed my mind; you must!

Marchy, if you’re reading this, hell only knows when I might be in DC, but I know I’d love a sniff adventure with you. I’d do the VERY British thing with your SAs – we have a special way with rudeness where it can come off, to those not in the know, as extreme politeness.

Maybe we can have Euro adventures sometime? I know you gad about a little.

  • Alica says:

Ehm, I would be very pleased to be included in the drawing for CHristmas surprise 🙂
