Olympic Orchids Devilscent Project Lil#1 Dev#2 by Ellen Covey + GIVEAWAY!!

HEY POSSE PEEPS! Portia in the Posse from AustralianPerfumeJunkies and super thrilled to be bringing you something so far out of my normal range of fragrance sniffing that I just had to bring it to your attention. Now I first heard about this Devilscent Project from my mate Sheila Eggenberger, who is the blogtress of TheAlembicatedGenie, because she has written a book called Quantum Demonology which has become a cult hit amongst the fragrance fraternity. This has inspired a slew of perfumers and today I get to write about one of my favourite niche perfumers, Ellen Covey from Olympic Orchids Artisan Perfumes because she has produced some incredibly confronting, intriguing, freaky, devilish fragrances that I have no frame of reference for comparison for this project. They are so far removed from what I expect from Olympic Orchids and I think you will be blown away by them too.

Olympic Orchids Devilscent Project Lil#1 Dev#2 by Ellen Covey

Olympic Orchids Lil#1

From Olympic Orchids: This is the fragrance of Lilith, the original Eve and former wife of the Devil in Sheila Eggenberger’s novel Quantum Demonology.… It is the enthralling scent of a woman with perfect confidence in her powers, a swirling, almost chameleon-like veil of fragrance that is ethereal and nearly transparent, but still vividly and unquestionably present and compelling…. This is the fragrance of a female warrior who not only fights and wins, but seduces everyone in her path.

Top: Davana (sweet fruit), kewda (balsamic floral), kaffir lime leaf
Heart: Passion-fruit, angel’s trumpet, lily-of-the-valley, geranium, cyclamen, rose
Base: Woody notes, cashmeran, musk, and patchouli

The featured accords look innocuous enough like any other fragrance and lead you to believe that this will be like many others. WOW! I have worn Lil 4 times now and find it mind blowingly unfamiliar, more unsettling that ELdO’s SM and also more compelling. It opens sweet and fruity, like a strong celebuscent, but there is an undertow of weird, and dissonant that gives me heart thuddingly, edge of your seat, repeated swallowing horror film chills. I know the flowers are beautiful and fragrant and the more I try to focus on them the less I can smell them and the more I get this freaky something that lasts the whole life of the fragrance. GHASTLY but also a wonderful fun look at perfume and what I consider beautiful and how just because I don’t love it doesn’t mean it’s not a masterpiece. It is art, in the sense that it has moved me through a set of emotions and changed my perspective, and it makes me think, every time. Applause to you Ellen Covey. At the same time gorgeous and disgusting on my skin.

Olympic Orchids Dev#2

From Olympic Orchids: Based on the novel Quantum Demonology, by Sheila Eggenberger, this smoky, dense, and rich composition is a big, insistent fragrance that represents the romantic phase when the tempestuous love affair between the protagonist and Dev is proceeding in all of its ups and downs. It’s the fundamental seductive scent of Dev, without the darkest and most sinister of the base notes, a spicy, woody, animalic scent that stuns the senses and renders the lover oblivious to any of the horrors and dangers that might lie in wait…. It combines the spiritual with the carnal in a rising plume of incense accompanied by the riff of a heavy metal bass played by an entity in a black leather jacket.

In one line: Three different kinds of labdanum, tolu balsam, black agar, woody base notes, musks, castoreum, civet, cistus oil, incense, immortelle absolute, cade, davana, leather, rose, clove, cardamom, cinnamon, cinnamon leaf

I have been too scared to try this on my skin before so you are getting a day of first impressions: NOTHING like I expected, in no way is this confrontational, it is inviting, deep, humus rich soil, dark places but not dank, there is almost a cannabus/bong water smell hiding in the background. Not feral at all, it reads all masculine and manly stereotypes, leathery, barn but not barnyard. This is so wearable and quite beautiful. I would love to smell this on a man and would probably follow this scent around a club till I found it.  If Ellen Covey was after a scent to seduce then she has hit the nail on the head. Olympic Orchids Dev#2 has all the depths of bitter dark chocolate and all the warm welcome of a mocha coffee with slightly burnt beans. I am ordering a bottle of this. AH MAY ZING!! It lasts for hours and hours going through to an acrid tannery smell that is surprisingly good over a sweetish resinous something.

Olympic Orchids Devilscent Project fragrances are running a terrific sample program 5 x 3ml Devilscents for $30 delivered to the world. 30ml EdP is only $45!!

OMG!! I got in touch with Ellen Covey to tell her I was reviewing the 2 fragrances and she shot me back an email in a twinkle and this is an edited version of what she said:

Hello lovely Portia,
I think this is just perfect for a late Halloween giveaway and special deal. I can do a drawing/giveaway of one 15 ml bottle of any Devil Scent, reader’s choice, so they’ll have to go to my website and read about them all to make a decision and leave a comment saying which one they’d prefer under your post.
I’ll also offer $5 off the Devil Scent spray sample packs (code word is DEVIL) and a free mini-pack of LIL and one DEV variation (3 ml spray samples) with purchase of any full bottle (15 ml or larger) from anywhere on the website (Code word is HALLOWEEN).
Hugs, Ellen

GO TO IT ALL. Leave a message in the comments about which of the Olympic Orchids Devilscent Project you would most like to own a 15ml bottle of and you will be in the draw. I’ll leave the draw open till Sunday 11pm Sydney, Australia time and I will put all names on pieces of paper and TSO Jin will draw a winner that will be announced on the Perfume Posse. The winner will have till Wednesday 11pm Sydney, Australia time to get in touch or I’ll give the prize to someone else. GET GOING!!

Sometimes fragrances come along that blow my how things should smell button right off the page. I think if you are interested in fragrance as art then these are 2 of the most interesting, boundary pushing ones I’ve come across. Over at AustralianPerfumeJunkies we are doing an Interview with Sheila Eggenberger if you’d like to learn more about the catalyst for these fragrances, so come on over and say HI.

Until next week I hope you have deliciously fragrant lives and HOPE YOU HAD A HAPPY HALLOWEEN,
Love, Love, Love,
Portia xx

  • Amer says:

DEV #3 would be my choice as I am always up for trying natural perfumes. Even more so when there is ambergris included

  • Brooke says:

What a fantastic draw! I tried a couple of these at the SF Fragrance salon and I was quite impressed. I somehow missed out on sampling Dev#4. I must rectify that and make it my choice.

  • Scottie says:

I had a difficult time settling on a fragrance as they seem-while related- so diverse, but I would choose #3 (as it is all natural, and I like the notes/concept). Thanks for the great draw, and the great reviews!

  • Diana says:

I haven’t experienced any of the Devilscent ‘fumes yet, but I have had the opportunity to try about 2/3 of the rest of her line. I really enjoy wearing the Olympic Orchids scents. To me, they seem rich without being cloying or too loud. Anyhow, I’d like to try all the Devilscents but if I had to choose just one, it would be #1.

  • Undina says:

I tried all of the perfumes for the project but my favorite one is Dev #2. Please enter me into the draw. 🙂

  • Merlin says:

Well I NEED to get the whole sample pack so I can read those gorgeous descriptions and sniff at the same time. And, which do I vote for? Well, the mood of Dev #3 appeals to me most. No, the mood of Dev #4. Ok, well look, its just inevitable – so I’ll go (ultimately) with Dev #3!

    • Portia says:

      HA HA HA Martin!
You are right, the whole sample pack is also on its way here to Sydney. they are extremely desirable, aren’t they?
      Portia xx

  • Heather says:

I am still hoping hard for Dev #1, but am increasingly intrigued by the “scary” buzz about Lil1, so will look for a chance to sniff it at some point. I have smelled raunchy and dank and acutely distasteful, but not scary, so it will be a first for me.

  • Harlan says:

Ellen Covey has a way with perfumes, and for quite reasonable prices. I have yet to try the Devilscent series, and being the lover of all things animalic that I am- I really really want to try the Dev #2! Thanks for the draw y’all!

  • may says:

would love to try Dev#2 😀

  • Hamber says:

And i’m glad reading your article. But wanna remark on some general things, The website style is perfect, the articles is really nice : D. Good job, cheers

  • TaffyJ says:

Lil Lil Lil Lil Lil Lil Lil Lil Lil Lil Lil!!!

    Ellen Covey is a genuis.

  • Lean S says:

This is great! Thank you for the opportunity! I would love to try Dev#4.

  • Ramona says:

Oh Oh Oh! Dev #2 ismakingme drool with anticipation while Lil #1 scares the bejaysus out ofme! I am a floral fan (much- and only in the right spot, on the sidelines, and playing a supporting role- NOT front and center) Thanks for the draw and now I amoff to the Olympic Orchid website- Slainte!

  • Poodle says:

These sound so interesting. I think I like the sounds of Dev #3. I’m going to have to get the sample pack and try them sometime soon. You’ve got me so curious about Lil too. I don’t think I’ve ever tried a “scary” fragrance.

  • Ellen Covey says:

I just want to let everyone know that the DEVIL discount isn’t working on my website checkout, and some payments are not going through. Maybe it’s after-effects of Sandy. The hosting company is working on trouble-shooting these issues. In any case, you can rest assured that you WILL receive your discount, even if I have to manually credit it back to your account. Whatever problems exist will be solved.

  • Heather says:

I would love to receive Dev#1. I’m intrigued to find out to what degree it foreshadows the others.

  • This has been such a delicious project to follow and participate in! Everyone has brought something different yet dangerous to the table.

It’s good stuff people!! You won’t be disappointed!

Please don’t enter me in the draw. 🙂

    Amanda

  • tammy says:

What a compelling review and very generous offers all around from Ms. Covey, thank you!.

I’m having a difficult time deciding between Lil, Dev2 and Dev3….because I absolutely want to smell like a seductive female warrior, naturally, but Dev 2 sounds drop-dead sexy and I am also a complete labdanum ho. Decisions, decisions….a sample pack is definitely in my future!

Guess I’ll go with Dev3; my husband and I are apart for the next 13 months, so there is no point in being seductive and Dev2 might remind me too much of him ( he has a kind of spicy, musky scent of his own) A scent that is about loneliness and resignation of Fate is perfect for me right now.

    • Oh Tammy!
I hope you are all good. At least you get to spread out in the bed.
Dev#3 is probably the one although Lil#1 is really fun and creepy, better enjoyed solo I think
      Portia xx

    • Oh Tammy!
      I hope all is good!
At least you get to spread out in the bed.
Great choice and Lil#1 would also be good for some solo time, I can’t imagine wearing it in company.
      Portia xx

      • tammy says:

Portia, you’re so kind…all is well; we own a home deep in the country next door to my mama, who is getting on a bit, and I need to be there to look after her and the house! My husband has to stay at his job another year for various reasons, so it’s just me and mama and the possums for awhile! (not to mention the groundhogs, armadillos, deer, fox, coons, coyotes, scorpions, copperheads, tarantulas, etc etc etc)

  • ElizabethC says:

Dev#2 sounds amazing, I love labdanum, tolu balsam, immortelle and cardamom! Also would enjoy trying out a perfumer from my local area 🙂

    • Hey ElizabethC,
you are right, Dev#2 is amazing. How wonderful that you are near Ellen Covey’s workshop. If you go and stalk her give Ellen a BIG hug from me. I am very jealous that you are so close.
      Good luck in the draw,
      Portia xx

  • PattyS says:

Leather, spices, animalics – sign me up for that! Dev#2 has everything that I like. Thank you Ellen for the draw!

  • Alica says:

Wow, both scents´ composition is very exotic. I think the No. 2 would attract me more. Many thanks!!!

  • FragrantWitch says:

I have been dying to try these and now the urge just got worse! Dev #3 sounds most interesting to me but at some point will sample them all. I’m already surfing over to her website….xx

  • rosiegreen says:

All of the scents sound amazing but if I have to choose just one it will be Dev # 1. Thanks for a great review and thanks to Doc Elly for the draw.

    • Hello Rosiegreen,
You are welcome and I just love Doc Elly’s work so I’m really glad to bring you more of it.
Dev#1? I’m so interested in all your choices and wonder why?
      Good luck in the draw,
      Portia xx

  • Claudia says:

I would love to try DEV #3. It sounds so intriguing! Thanks for the draw! 🙂

  • Joaquim says:

DEV#2 sounds sooooo heavy and I would love to try this!
Civet, castoreum, immortelle, davana, leather…wow, just wow!

    Thank you for the draw

  • Tarleisio says:

Considering that in a sense my own descent into the maelstrom of perfume brain began in the early days of this very blog, this is quite the thrill to have my project mentioned on the Posse! (FWIW – I LOVE YOU GUYS!) If you’re looking for something utterly removed from ‘ordinary’, the Devilscents are a great place to start – and Ellen created five perfumes unlike anything at all else – guaranteed! Please don’t enter me in the draw, obviously! 😉 But thank you from the bottom of my black and (very) depraved heart! xo

  • Irina says:

I think Dev#2 is the most interesting for me
thanks a lot for the draw

  • Dana says:

Dev #2 sounds like quite the scent experience and I would love to smell it! Thanks for the draw.

  • Eldarwen22 says:

The second one looks interesting but the first one looks scary because I don’t care for citrus notes.

    • Hey Ellarwen22,
It IS scary, but controlled scary. I have nearly gone through my 3 ml sample of it giving myself the heebeegeebees. I didn’t know you were a citrus phobic, that must make finding fragrance hard, are there any citrus you can stand?
      Portia xx

      • Eldarwen22 says:

When citrus is very well blended/well done, I don’t mind it. What turned me off to citrus was when I was getting rid of a stomach virus and I was wearing Frapin’s Espirit de Fleurs. Something about a powdery citrus like Espirit de Fleurs made my stomach churn and lose my lunch. Shalimar has a citrus dominant note that I can stand and if my mood is just right, I like it.

  • Masha says:

    Hi, Portia!
I’m so glad you reviewed these! No need to enter me in the drawing- I have them already. They are quite mind-blowing. Lil actually freaked me out on a deep level; it’s the most disturbing perfume I’ve ever worn. My favorite is actually Dev 4, the most minimalist of the batch, a very meditative and centering incense perfume. Ellen Covey really went to town with labdanum in this series, and it’s definitely worthy of sniffage. Great stuff and utterly unlike anything else out there. And Sheila’s novelette is a ton of wicked fun!

  • rosarita says:

Ah, I think Olympic Orchids is a wonderful line of perfumes, so of course I have to enter any draw that’s available! These sound fascinating. I am intrigued by all the descriptions; Dev#3 sounds best to me. Thanks!
