Jeke by Slumberhouse 2008

Posse Peeps!

Portia from AustralianPerfumeJunkies in the Posse for a Thursday extravaganza. YaY! I hope you are all happy and well, sorry if you are not but shit days pass, hopefully this review will give you a smile because I have found a new niche crew and I am in love! Really different, directional, deep fragrances that make me question how so much pap even gets to market shelves when there is genius out there waiting to be discovered. I offer you today,

Jeke by Slumberhouse 2008

Sometimes I am caught utterly unawares by the great stuff that is still being created in the world and Jeke by Slumberhouse is a winner. The Slumberhouse crew describe themselves thus;
Slumberhouse is a boutique cologne label in the heart of Portland, OR; created and inspired by urban and street culture, art, film and music – especially the new school of hiphop and graffiti artists. We are a group of young gents who march to our own beat, embracing an absolute disregard for other brands, trends and marketing cliches. Slumberhouse represents an unequivocal love for the art of fragrance making.

Recently on AustralianPerfumeJunkies we reviewed Pear + Olive by Slumberhouse and Josh from Slumberhouse hunted me down and here is an extract from his eMail:
Also, I came across your review via twitter and can’t tell you how much I appreciate reading your sentiments on the fragrance. Your words are the kind of thing I thrive on and I find instances like this to be very meaningful so thank you very much.
WOW!!! I felt like a rock star had eMailed me because the juices Slumberhouse are purveying are world domination stuff.

Fragrantica gives these featured accords in one line:
Cade, tobacco, patchouli, benzoin, labdanum.

So learning new things every day, Cade Oil is extracted from a European/Middle eastern native Juniper that has been used in natural medicine forever! Who knew? That explains the fresh, brisk and slightly reminiscent of medicine/booze opening that really gets your attention and tells you to buckle up because this ride we are about to embark on is going to be a Roller Coaster! After the initial blast my skin begins to warm the benzoin resin and the labdanum giving a creamy sweet vanilla and slight sea water undercurrent to the woody, green, herbaceous main theme of Jeke by Slumberhouse. There are times when the tobacco goes really smokey and smells like the first whiff of someone lighting a cigarette nearby. YUMMM. I find Jeke by Slumberhouse to be reminiscent of camping, there’s even a correlation to our eucalyptus forests, all earthy, humus rich, smokey, sharp freshness. After reading the SmellyThoughts review I can’t get cloves out of my head, there is a very spicy citrus note I’m presuming comes from the cade that reminds me of that lovely burst of ZING that cloves can give, and it weaves through the fragrance for hours. The dry down is sweet spicy amber. The note list is so short but the story is HUGE. I recommend you try at least a sample because Jeke has blown my mind.

This is take no prisoners perfume, not suitable for close office work but cool if you have your own office or work outdoors, if wearing to dinner give Jeke an hour to settle before you eat or it may interfere with your palette. Excellent sillage and a decent scent bubble the lasting power is also wonderful and you will be still enjoying the story 7-9 hours later depending on variables.

SmellyThoughts reviews a bunch of the Slumberhouse range without a note list, great reading.

Slumberhouse HQ has an eShop, blog and some background info
IndieScents has the range
Parfum1 has the range
SurrenderToChance has a full range of samples

I hope you have enjoyed meeting Jeke by Slumberhouse as much as I have enjoyed bringing it to you. If you’ve enjoyed this you may like to trip across and see what madness is going on over at AustralianPerfumeJunkies too.
Have you met the Slumberhouse range yet? Do you know what Josh looks like? Do you love fresh green mentholated fragrances? Is there another I should try? Please join the conversation in the comments below, we love to chat and banter.

Till next week, Love, Love, Love,
Portia xx

    Another great review!
This house holds a lot of promise but they ought to have a cheaper (or redeemable) sample program in order to get known. Taking a look at their site today it seems that they discontinued several of their perfumes (like Eki that was a favorite of mine) and they stopped offering the 15ml bottles that were very nice looking and quite affordable. From their most recent creations I think Sova really speaks to me (whispers corrupting promises of debauchery in my ears…mmmmm).

  • SMELLYTHOUGHTS says:

Hi! Thanks for the heads up 🙂 It made me revisit my reviews and realised how much they need updating – I gave my sample set away though D: Haha, ahh well, I hope someone out there is enjoying them! I am still craving Vikt and Grev which I will have to buy soon. Slumberhouse seem to have reformulated all of their fragrances (for the better) and the these raving reviews have me salivating. I tried an update of Grev and it was outstanding in comparison to the old formula. Lovely write up, think I’m gonna be broke soon 🙁

I love Slumberhouse! I own Jeke,Norne,Vikt,Sova, Baque, and Pear+Olive. They’re all very unique and bring something different to the table. It’s refreshing to see a line that’s not shackled to the market driven conventional perfume industry.I love Jeke.It really does give a rustic outdoorsy autumnal vibe.I like the image of the night air with a forest fire in the distance. Baque is a great tobacco perfume and Sova is what I woud call a clover and tobacco scent. Most of them seem to have a house note or theme but Pear+Olive is as unique a scent as I’ve ever come across-still trying to wrap my head around it.I look forwards to all their new releases.I’m gonna go spritz some Jeke right now! Great review!

    • RVB!! One Of Us!
I’m so glad you are loving the Slumberhouse range. Josh is quite an artist isn’t he. I am slowly making my way through them all but have FB Jeke and P+O, which is astounding and I love it,
Are there other niche brands you love?

I’m exploring the scents of Olfactive studio with my favorites being Lumiere Blanche,a sublime scent of cardamom, milky notes and creamy sandalwood, and Chambre Noire-a dark plum and leather spice scent(a lighter version of Histories de Parfums 1740)I’m also enjoying the scents of Juan the Exotic Island Perfumer, especially Flor Azteca a unique tuberose scent with a note of Mexican cocoa

        • So I adore Olfactive Studio’s Chamber Noir and am yet to try Lumier Blanche, there is a lot of blog love surrounding it though.
Thanks for Juan the Exotic Island Perfumer I shall go hunting.

  • Michelle says:

Ah Portia, you vixen, you! I just had to go to the website & purchase the sample pack. Your review was irresistible & the sample packs they have are very affordable. Thank you!

    • Hey Michelle,
I hope you love them. Come back and tell me which is your fave once they arrive. I can’t wait to hear.
So affordable, it’s a refreshing change,

  • Martha says:

I’m fascinated by this perfume house, and I’m especially intrigued by Pear & Olive. Now, if only I could smell one (or more) of the fragrances. Looks like I need to get some samples soon.

    • Hello Martha,
Josh runs a very interesting fragrance house. All the ones I’ve tried have been definite boundary pushers and beautiful. Let me know how you go.

  • Poodle says:

I love Slumberhouse. I have had this on my list to try for a while and this review might just push me to get some.

    • Go to it Poodle,
Please come and tell me how you love it. That would be awesome, Have you tried others? I can’t remember.

      Portia xx

      • Poodle says:

I’ve tried a few, Baque, Grev, and one other which I can’t remember the name of at the moment. I loved Baque and want a bottle if luckyscent gets it back in stock. Jeke sounds like it might have a similar feel to it. I want to try Pear & Olive and actually came close to blind buying a bottle after your review of it on APJ.

  • Patty White says:

I haven’t tried this yet, and I need to. I’ve heard such great things about the line! Thanks, Portia! xoxo

  • ElizabethC says:

You are a bad influence introducing me to all of these great Pacific Northwest perfumers 🙂 A store that carries these perfumes is about a mile from our house – guess where I’m going today!

    • Hiya ElizabethC
Drive, ride, walk or crawl but get there. Enjoy your spritz fest, come back and tell me how you went please

      • ElizabethC says:

Went and checked out the perfumes! Jeke was beautiful, but unfortunately, it might not play nice with my overly picky sinuses. However, Pear and Olive – wow – that pear opening note is really something amazing! Right now my arm smells like it is back from a picnic where it ate fresh ripe pears and greens, dressed simply in a good olive oil, and enjoyed being in a garden full of drying, slightly dusty herbs and grasses. That’s one lucky arm! 🙂

    • Das says:

Hi Elizabeth! Are you referring to Sweet Anthem? I live a few blocks from there and it’s where I picked up Pear & Olive.

      • ElizabethC says:

Yes! I found out that they are not open today but will definitely be dropping by there tomorrow! I’m glad to hear that they carry the Pear and Olive because that is one of the ones that I was interested in! Nice to have them in the neighborhood!!

  • Akimon says:

This is my kind of take no prisoners perfume house. I got a set of samples recently and following up on that, I just got a full bottle of Norne. It’s like a bonfire in the middle of magic forest. I have to now go back to my sample of Jeke, but I can feel my wallet tremble in its casing..

  • tammy says:

Darn you anyway, you’re getting to be every bit as bad as Tom…capable of talking me in to trying things I know I probably won’t like, at a time when my husband and I are tying to get by on one income!

This sounds amazing, and of course I am off to get a sample…..thank you!

  • Musette says:

Hi, doll! YOU ARE A ROCKSTAR! Deal with it! LOL! And I am your Number One Fangirl! I have been wanting to try this line and …well, I just haven’t yet. Your review makes me want to get on it, pdq. This one doesn’t sound so much ‘me’ – then again, re-reading your response to the notes as they unfold…maybe…

    • Right back at you Musette! Thank you for taking me into your heart, it’s warm and fun here.
Maybe you will and maybe you won’t but you’ll never know till you try and I am LOVING the Slumberhouse range. I like it when people take a chance on their dreams and the payoff is magic.

  • Heather Wood says:

Thanks, Portia, this sounds like something I have to sample. Very few people in my area smoke, but once in a while I catch a distant whiff of someone lighting a cigarette and am surprised how much I like that scent in the fall and winter (as long as it ends at a distant whiff.) Sounds like this might offer a bit of the same guilty pleasure! See you next Thursday.

    • Hello lovely Heather,
The Significant Other smokes and I love the smell, so movie starrish and old fashioned. If you do try the Slumberhouse range please come back and tell me how you went.
