A Wing and A Prayer – BARGAIN!! $10 Mini Sampler Package

Hey Bargain Hunting Fumies,
Woo Hoo! HAPPY NEW YEAR!! Portia here from AustralianPerfumeJunkies to welcome you to the new year and wish you only the most delightful fragrant adventures throughout 2013. Sometimes I love to troll around Etsy. There are fabulous things from all over the world that otherwise I would never come across. A while ago I found a small perfume/fragrance company that does perfume, home fragrance and body satins (they look like oils) for incredibly reasonable prices and the scents are excellent too. Since 2008 A Wing and A Prayer Perfumes has been founded and run by Jane Cate and her daughter Sarah using natural ingredients. They talk about natural but I think these scents stack up to anything else in the market for depth, interest, story and longevity; 4-6 hours in the full heat of summer is good on my skin. I started with a super great $10 Mini Sampler Pack.

These lovely approximately 4ml atomisers are perfect for really getting to know if a fragrance is suitable for you. Also a wonderful size for us ridiculous perfumistas who feel the need to own a few ml of EVERY perfume ever created! Which 3 did I choose?

Berkeley

Ylang-Ylang, Jasmine, and Frankincense are the notes given and there is a warm, slightly indolic resinousness to Berkeley. I like it very much. Berkeley brings to mind the sensual delights of a straight mans fantasy of a seraglio. All sexy, naked girls waxing, washing and generally touching each other. Fleshy, breathy and pretty. I feel like there is some citrus zest and spice here too. Of the three Berkeley is the A Wing and A Prayer I reach for most often because it is such a great casual wear that maintains interest without taking my mind of the work at hand.

Carmel

Oakmoss and Juniper Berry create a delicious contrast in fragrance with the high, fluting Juniper a sharp twinkle above the green darkness of the oakmoss. Interesting that I get a very gourmand sweetness here too like buttery passionfruit cake icing. If you like the current trend of sweet fruity fragrances then this would be a logical next step down the perfume wormhole. If you are a die hard perfumista already this will surprise and delight you with its cheeky flirt of juniper and its hefty base of oakmoss. Extremely wearable and unusual.

Sunday

Nutmeg and Vanilla essential oils make up Sunday and I find it the most natural smelling of the set. Not that it smells like nutmeg or vanilla much but it does have that glorious darkness that modern perfumery has completely done away with. This could very easily have been one of the Devilscent Project fragrances because it is at once alluring and dangerous when you are very close. At a steps distance the 2 combine to create a very enticing non edible gourmand. All you up in cool climes currently would find this very cuddly and after an hour the gourmand comes to the fore and vanilla rules supreme only mildly tempered by the nutmeg.

After a brief shipping snafu, I got a VERY elaborate package from them. I ordered Berkeley, Tallulah B., and Notorious. I tried Notorious first and…It was a SCRUB-BER. Ouch. Urinous hope chest. At least this brand appears to have no trouble with its products’ tenacity.

Easily the worst-smelling perf I’ve encountered in my two years’ perfing.

  • Gertie says:

Thank you for posting this, Portia! I ended up ordering Autumn Breeze, Soiree and Muse. Can’t wait to sniff them. 🙂

I got the samples in the mail today. They included two extra very generous samples and the way they had wrapped them up was gorgeous! I felt like I was opening a birthday present. What a great company. Thanks again for turning me onto them. I love this blog. 🙂

I can always count on you to guide me to my next cheap perfume thrill. 🙂

      Oh yes Poodle,
It’s nice to have a couple of affordable splurge sites up your sleeve for mini retail therapy sessions.

Thank you so much for such a wonderful article about us and our perfumes. Your article had increased our business today, as well as interest in our perfumes.
    You’re the best.

Just bought a sample pack…thanks, Portia! I got Berkeley, Notoriety and Haight & Ashbury,

I found Wing and a Prayer perfumes several years back when they participated in the Mystery of Musk project, and was delighted at their generous sample program. My faves at the time were Bella, Flower, San Francisco Mist, Ginger Spice and Sabra CoCo, but I obviously need to order again, as they’ve got a bunch of new frags; I’ve heard great things about Haight & Ashbury.

    • Portia says:

      Hey Dionne!
I wonder if Ginger Spice smelled like a Spice Girl? When I get through my current crop I will try Haight & Ashbury, even the name is wonderful.

I’m always on the lookout for inexpensive perfumes that are actually good. Not just okay, they have to be good. Looks like I am gonna have to get the sampler pack.

  • Suzy Q says:

Portia, I love A Wing & A Prayer! It’s so good to see it and Jane Cate getting attention here. I got Haight & Ashbury in Swapmania last spring and fell in love with it. Donna wrote about it in her review of the Summer of Patchouli Love project on Perfume Smellin’ Things. To me Haight & Ashbury is more rose and sandalwood than patchouli. It’s definitely not a head shop patchouli scent. You can wear it to work. I like it best in the spring and fall.

I also tried Tallulah B with Jasmine which I liked very much. H&A is on my short list of bottles to buy in 2013.

    • Portia says:

      YAY! SuzyQ,
Did you know that SuzieQ is a famous Australian Burlesque performer? She is uber gorgeous and won Miss Nude World I think.
A Wing & A Prayer frags have seriously rocked my world. Everyone is getting little 4ml spray bottles from me at the moment, and so affordable too.

4-6 hours in the heat of an Australian summer sounds like some hefty longevity to me! And Carmel is one of my favorite places (btw – that is what I get for skimming the post headlines – at first glance I saw ‘caramel’ and was all ‘ewww’. LOL!
