Granville by Francois Demachy for Dior 2010

Hi hi hi Posse! Portia from AustralianPerfumeJunkies with one of the lovely Dior Collection Privée line, Granville. A masculine made for women, a fresh burst of scent that is rarely looked at nowadays. I think it is still an adventurous fragrance that pushes thew marketing teams gender boundaries in new directions. A smooth and rich cologne in EdT built by Francois Demachy to be both an interesting twist on an old trope and a new, fun, pretty masculine for perfumistas of both sex.

I grabbed Granville a while ago when it was being split, I think by AndreaW, and so because it was coming from the UK (yes pre-reg days) I ordered a few frags and sadly Granville got spritzed once and then ignored in favour of the two I REALLY loved at the time: DIOR Oud Ispahan and one of the Guerlains maybe Mon Precieux Nectar or Metallica. So as I’ve been cleaning out stuff in readiness for the big move I have stumbled across this lovely 10ml decant and been spritzing it with abandon. It’s perfect mid season wear because it was great today while the sun shining and I was out in the garden weeding, then I enjoyed it so much that after my bath, in the cool of the evening, I wanted to wear it again tonight to dinner and it was killer there too. I loved getting huffs of it from my shirt while we were Korean BarBQing, chatting, laughing and trying to each create the perfect lettuce wrap filled with meat, vegies, chilies, raw garlic cloves, sesame oil and assorted other stuff. It’s now about 8 hours on from bath time and I or my clothes are still pumping Granville beautifully mixed with BarBQ scents. MMMMMMMM

Next day: Here I am again in a fog of Grenville. Its cool green citrus opening that wafts gently into more green and herbaceousness that warms only slightly towards drydown is wonderful, wearable and I think I have a new best friend. Bright and slightly fizzy like a Limoncello, sweet and tart at the same time. Said to be done in homage to the wind at Christian Dior’s childhood home (above), the greenness of the area, the herb garden and the exuberance of his youth, I get it. Granville is all of this and more. A green with fizz, a cologne-esque EdT that lasts like an EdP and something I think every perfumista should have at least a wearing of because it really is lovely.

Do you have a favourite DIOR Privee? Which one? Why? Did you try DIOR Granville?

I’ve slowly learned that I love summery, green fragrances above most other genres. And I haven’t tried Granville! I’ve sniffed most of the Privee line and haven’t fallen totally in love yet. I’ve got to try it!

  • Melissa Pham says:

I haven’t tried that, I’d love to try that someday. Thanks for sharing.

  • Laurels says:

I’ve only tried a few of the Dior Privée perfumes, and the one I liked best was Milly-la-Forêt, which also had a cologne vibe, although leaning more toward the floral. Alas, it was also very light and fleeting, which makes me wonder if it might contain a musk I can’t smell. I haven’t yet found a Dior to love, but I’ll definitely give Granville a try if I have the chance.

Did you ever finalize a date for the Scent Bar? Not that I care, I mean, someone else wanted to know. xxx

    • Portia says:

HA HA HA! Yes, date finalized. We are meeting Killian Hennessy on the Wednesday. SO FREAKING EXCITING!
I also found Milly-la-Forêt fleeting unless I respritzed about an hour in, it lengthens thew life considerably.

I haven’t tried any of the Privee line as far as I know, but this Granville sounds great to me. Green and herbaceous are words that make my ears and nose perk up. I’ll have to search out a sample next spring. Love that photo of Dior’s childhood home…gorgeous!

    • Portia says:

Yes he came from a rather wel to do crew by the looks of it DinaC, very nice.
Spring will be a perfect Granville time.

Mmmm … Portia! This is such a nice one; thanks for putting it back on my radar. Must find my samples/decant ASAP. BTW, I’ve heard you mention moving a time or two lately — where are you off to?

    • Portia says:

      Hi there Ann,
I hope your Birthday was a ripper. Yes, grab the Granville decant and spritz like crazy.
Moving!! Yes we are in the new place. Currently it’s wall to wall boxes. Just a 30 minute drive across the city of Sydney, we went from a big house with a pool and grounds in leafy suburban Pymble to an inner city Redfern apartment. Quite a downsize and poor Jin & Kath are squished in here at the moment. By next week it will all be packed away and the place will feel like home, fingers crossed.

      • Ann says:

So glad to hear you’re in and will soon be settled. I know you loved living in the suburbs, but it sounds cool to be near the vibrant heart of such an exciting city. Congratulations!

  • This is one of my favorites in the Dior line, which has a large number of beautiful pieces. I once called the Granville area my home (long, long ago), and this scent does take me back to the freshness of the breeze and the tinge of the ocean when standing at Dior’s childhood home. Thank you for celebrating this scent . . . I think it’s approaching time I purchase the full bottle (the big one) . . .

    • Portia says:

      Hi there AestheticAlterations,
How lovely that you got to live in the Granville area, no matter how long ago. Those BIG bottles will last you 10 lifetimes.

  • Lisa D says:

I haven’t tried many of the Privee line, but there is at least one that I love – Eau Noire! I’m not usually a fan of lavender, but mixing it with coffee was a stroke of genius. It’s a wonderfully weird combination. Simultaneously astringently herbal and stickily sweet.

    • Portia says:

      Hi there LisaD,
I have spent some skin time with Eau Noire but for the life of me I cannot remember how it smelled. There’s a sample around here somewhere, I’ll look.
