Ma Dame Rose `n Roll by Jean Paul Gaultier

Hiya Perfumed Posse! Ma Dame Rose `n Roll seems to be one of Jean Paul Gaultier’s forgotten fragrances. It’s rarely talked of on the boards. It seems JPG’s frags are either smash hits that the world goes into a frenzy for or die a complete and utter death moments after release to be sold off for pennies on the discounters until all stock is gone and we never hear of them again.

Fragrantica gives these featured accords:
Top: Orange
Heart: Rose, pomegranite
Base: Virginian cedar, musk

Let’s start with the uber cool Ma Dame Rose `n Roll packaging. 1960-70-80s colours and styling all smooshed together, a vinyl record and the bottle cheekily showing a picture of JPG Classique and various other historic images. The murky pink a complete return to bathrooms of yesteryear and all packed in the simplest square bottle imaginable. I really like the whole shebang.

How does it smell? Ma Dame Rose `n Roll opens very colognish with a bright sharp citrus, perfect warm weather wear. The citrus sharpness burns off quickly leaving a wet, dewy pomegranate and sheer clean rose smell. It’s pretty and beautifully blended. More intense than most of the current sheer offerings and, being a Francis Kurkdjian, excellent. I get a lovely peony/lily breath in the heart that skews lightly indolic and gives the fragrance an interesting twist, maybe this is how FK has interpreted pomegranate. Through the heart Ma Dame Rose `n Roll reminds me a little of a rosy version of Cartier’s Baiser Vole though the fragrances are quite different.

As we head towards dry down, many hours later all I have left is a soft amorphous wash of musky lily/rose, still wet and new smelling. The end is not new or groundbreaking but nice.

Ma Dame Rose `n Roll lasts and lasts, the opening is fun and different so excellent for working or long nights partying. At the start you want to smell amazing and at the end still fresh. For these prices you can hardly go wrong.
