Off Topic: Wine

wineWell, I admit that I on occasion like to have a glass (or three) of wine. Usually out at dinner, but sometimes out at a bar. I have an old friend names Sue and we have a thing0 we call it “glass and a half.” We order one glass each, then one more that we split (I know, we’re crazy!) I am not a big fan of most reds, although with a heavier meal I’ll indulge. Ususally I drink something like a Chardonnay or Pinot Grigio and I’ll even admit (oh the horror) that I even enjoy that 80’s staple, the white wine spritzer.

So I’m going to throw it open to you all- what’s your favorite tipple? Let us know in the comments.

  • I drink beer more often than wine, though I like a good red (especially if it’s both good and relatively inexpensive). I like a lot of different kinds of beer; it kind of just depends on the time of year and what I’m in the mood for. This time of year I love me a good porter or stout. And I’m generally not super into the whole pumpkin-spice-everything whatever, but I do like a good pumpkin beer. A local brewery, St. Arnold’s, makes a pumpkin imperial stout called Pumpkinator that is really good, but they only make a limited amount, and once that’s gone, it’s gone for the year.

Any big, fat, heavy red will do for me. In fact, I have been drinking 1-2 glasses a night for the past 20 years or so. Only recently has my metabolism forced me to consider cutting it out on week nights if I want to avoid looking like a puffer fish in a few years. :0(

Don’t be ashamed – I just bought a few bottles of Barefoot Red Wine Spritzer! It’s delicious! I used to be a fan of middle of the road reds (Cab, Pinot Noir, Shiraz, etc) and sweet whites for certain occasions (Gewurztraminer is a must on Thanksgiving). But lately my taste on everything have veered much sweeter. So lately it’s been Sangria and sweet reds for wine. But I drink beer or bourbon much more than wine.

I love wine, and since red wine is “healthy,” I have less dietary guilt when I indulge. Pinot Noir and Pinot Grigio are my favorite red and white respectively, although I’m always discovering new delights.

If I’m going white, I try to get my hands on a Txakoli, which is slightly effervescent, dry as a bone, and low alcohol. It’s delightful with shellfish, or on its own. It’s a Basque wine, and. It terribly easy to find, but soooooo worth the trouble. My favorite wine for just sipping is always going to be a rose’. Provençal are reliably delicious, and if you can get a Bandol, so much the better! I just had a Pol Roger 2000 Winston Churchill…and it was completely amazing. That’s a speedy little fellow though, so if you go Ruinart instead on the bubbles, you can’t lose. Mmmmm wine.

I’m also a white wine drinker (mostly Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Pinot Gris with the occasional Riesling or Gewürztraminer with spicy foods), and I love rosé in the summer. But my absolute favorite drink is a good bourbon, either neat or in a cocktail.

ElizabethC, I will have to remember Le Caviste the next time I visit Seattle! The cool weather has me turning to red wines.

There is a wonderful wine bar in Seattle called Le Caviste. We just ask for a style (floral, funky etc.) and follow the owners recommendations. There is such a strong connection in the way we enjoy (and the way we make) wine, cocktails and perfume. One of my favorite holiday cocktails is hot chocolate and chartreuse liquor (bright green and made w over 100 herbs and plants). I would very happily wear that as a perfume! (PS Hubby and I like to do 1 1/2 glasses each, more tastes with less calories and alcohol.)

I love white and red wines, even an occasional rosé. My very favorite wine is Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin (the Champagne with the yellow label). I don’t have it often because it is a bit spendy for my budget. I like: Malbec, Rioja, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Viognier, a dry Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, to name a few. My husband is better at remembering the names of specific vintners; I am more visual and recognize them by the labels.
