Digging up an Old Favorite

We just had a three day weekend and in my mind this was Sunday, derp.  So I don’t have too much of a post.  I DO have the name of the winner of my sample of the MDCI — Feraljasmine! (love that name)  I’ll email you.

It’s freeeezing right now, with the wind chill today was like 5 degrees.  Over the past few days I’ve worn an older perfume I’ve been craving; isn’t that the greatest feeling?  Sometimes I’m all meh and can’t decide what to wear, or everything seems wrong.  I love it when I wake up and think, I’m going to wear X!  (Assuming of course that X=something I own and can find.)

So for the past few days I’ve been wearing Barbara Bui, a warm comfort scent that I haven’t thought about in ages.  I don’t know if they still even make it, there were discontinuation rumors.  Anyway, it’s a good thing I’m back in the mood because I think I have four bottles of it, and it looks plentiful and cheap on eBay.

From Fragrantica: “Le Parfum by Barbara Bui is a Oriental Woody fragrance for women. It was launched in 2004. The nose behind this fragrance is Anne Flipo. The fragrance features amber, musk, woody notes and incense.”

Barbara is a warm, soft, musky pillow of a scent; it cuddles me like a cashmere sweater.  There’s nothing dramatic about it; it stays properly in the background, but I can always smell it.  It’s got that faint dough-rice-steam thing going on like KenzoAmour.  Which reminds me, I should grab that and bring it up too.

Any cravings you’re satisfying?

I found a 16 yo bottle of Chanel No 5 EDT that I had “hid from myself” and it still smells great. Now that I’m wearing it again, I want to check out more aldehydes.

The only thing that bums me out about finding this is that Chanel is not making the 1.7 ml refills for the bottle anymore. So I guess when I finally get through it one of these days, the bottle will become a monument on my dresser.

It has been a bit cooler here thank goodness, and I found myself reaching for Ambre Fetiche. Plan to indulge today too, after yoga class so I do not intrude into others’ airspace!

Rediscovering past loves of Mazzolari Alessandro, Amande Sucree, Cartier L’Heure Defendue, SDV, Oriental Brulant, Gourmand Coquin, Bois d’armenia, Tonka Imperial (and other Guerlain which can only come out in the winter), KM Loukhoum, and a lot of vanillas…all so wonderful they make me wonder why I would ever need to try anything else (but am compelled to nonetheless 🙂 ) I have to get a sample of that Barbara Bui…it sounds heavenly!

  • PJ says:

Um, not exactly wintry in Austin. Supposed to be 68 this afternoon. Still, we get our cold shots and I’ve been into Origin’s Ginger Essence. Worn it for some years now.
I never read anything about it, but every fall, when there’s even a prospect of a chilly day, I am drawn to it.

    • Ann says:

PJ, thanks for mentioning that Origins scent. I love, love, loved it back in the day and now you’ve rekindled my need for it!

    • March says:

I have Ginger Essence! I keep it at work, in my desk drawer. It’s a nice pick-me-up scent when I feel draggy, and I can’t imagine anyone complaining about it.

  • FeralJasmine says:

I’m loving my Black Cashmere and vintage Opium right now, as well as my whole collection of vanillas. For the first time, I’m enjoying Ambre Precieux Ultime. In the past I’ve not been impressed and it faded after 45 minutes, but after finally being more patient I’ve found that it “blooms” at about the 1 hour point and is a really nice vanillic amber for a couple of more hours. Not distinctive, but good. This is also good weather for Gothic I and Ambre Loup and Amaranthine and and and…

We’re a little warmer here in SW VA, at 14F, but it’s still dang cold. Gaze’s sheep are in the barn lot so they can go inside if they need to (there’s a lamb!), but the cows seem perfectly comfortable, and we don’t have any calves younger than three months so they can fend for themselves. The other day I saw a calf lying on the hay that had been rolled out, and eating some of it: bed and breakfast.

Have been wearing Tabac Aurea and Alahine, as well as BWFs. Should probably yank out my Organza Indecence and Black Cashmere too, if it’s going to stay cold like this.

    • March says:

Oooooh, Organza Indecence!!! Gonna have to head back down to the basement for that one, it sounds fantastic right now.

  • HeidiC says:

Right now in ND it’s -1, feels like -14…and that’s the warmest it’s been in 4 days. I’ve been wearing a lot of vintage Vol de Nuit and Coco to cozy up, and I think I’ll either wear one of those today, or possibly Ciel de Gum (again, Ann, THANK YOU for that lead!) or the Nazgul. And a gorgeous but snuggly new cardigan I found on huge sale at Anthropologie. Stay warm, everybody!

  • Dina C. says:

Through the years of my perfume hobby, I’ve heard of Barbara Bui, but never sniffed it. It sounds good. That category of woodsy-amber-incense works so well in cold weather. I wore VC & A Bois d’Iris yesterday, and Bois des Iles and L’Ambre des Merveilles earlier in the month. Today is perfectly frigid, and perfect for Kenzo Amour.

    • March says:

AHA!!! I wore KenzoAmour today, layered with BB. They are actually quite alike, with BB having more of an ambery sweetness to it.

  • Chris says:

It’s 17 degrees in Philadelphia and snow is being predicted for later in the week. We had a very light amount on Saturday but it didn’t stick.

I have been liberally spraying myself with Guerlain’s Winter Delice. Smelling it transports me from my old row house into a rustic but well appointed writer’s log cabin in the North woods and actually makes me enjoy winter.

    • March says:

The newscasters can’t shut up about the snow. I’m dreading it. Winter delice!! I love it. I have one of their little bottles (10ml?) so I use it sparingly, but what a cheerful scent.

  • Ann says:

Howdy, March!! Not quite as cold here (only 19 degrees), but still … So glad you mentioned that lovely Barbara Bui — now I’ve got to go digging around to find my bottle of it. Thanks, and stay warm!

  • Queen Cupcake says:

Hiya March, it’s about -10 degrees here in Boston this morning if you factor in wind chill. Still working through a giant pile of sample vials before I can buy much of anything new (or old). I try not to think about it too much. Kind of like picking a Tarot card, it’ll be right. Today’s random pick: Rose Praline (Parfums de Rosine). I quite like it! Your Barbara Bui sounds luscious–and yes, I remember reading something about discontinuation…(?)
    XO

  • rosarita313 says:

I have also been wearing Barbara Bui to survive the cold and I believe I learned about this one from you, March, ages ago. It’s such a warm, snuggly scent.

  • Portia says:

    Heya March,
The vintage Coco and Joy have been getting a workout lately and yesterday I swanned around in Byzance by Rochas. It was fun.
    Portia xx

    • March says:

I wore Coco to work a couple times last week. I forgot you were another fan. I don’t think it gets as much love as it should…

  • FeralJasmine says:

Should say ” gmailed at wooddogs3.”

  • FeralJasmine says:

I am so thrilled! I can be mailed at wooddogs3. Again, you are so kind to hold this draw.

  • eldarwen22 says:

I have been wearing a lot of either Deneuve or vintage Bal. I don’t know why I want Deneuve since it’s more of a spring perfume. Vintage Bal I can understand. I want to smell really good even though I am lounging around the house in my pajamas or sweats. It’s been really cold for a week and now the snow is coming down.

    • March says:

Vintage Bal! What a fantastic skank-monster (my bottle anyway.) The parfum is a bit better behaved. Winter is indeed coming!
