Mademoiselle Privé Coromandel: CHANEL

(from Patty – Hi, guys.  Portia was kind enough to fill in for me again this week.  I promise I’ll be back next week. I have lots of new things I’ve been trying and loving, but just am still a wee bit out of it.  See you next week!)

Hi Posse, News is that CHANEL will be releasing their newest fragrance in the Les Exclusives line, BOY after Chanel’s financier and lover Boy Capel. I thought we could celebrate with a little look at this video. It’s about the making of one of the CHANEL Mademoiselle Privé Watch Collection pieces, Coromandel.

Enjoy this look into the artistry and time consuming detail that becomes a CHANEL watch. I love these videos because they give me a look into the background of beautiful things. It’s getting a peek into the process, the way these incredible works are undertaken. What a treat to be living in a time where we can see these things.

If funds were unlimited what is the one piece of Haute Couture or any of their sidelines in watches, bags and all accessories would you want most? My choice is the Hermès cashmere shawl. One day I’ll have one too.

Emanating rare poetry, the precious dials of these jewelry watches are inspired by the Coromandel lacquered panels that were so dear to Gabrielle CHANEL and faithfully reproduce their superb decors.”

If funds were unlimited I’d give a boat load to charity and then buy that Chanel watch. It is stunning. With unlimited funds I’d have as much jewelry as Elizabeth Taylor with a 33 carat diamond ring…if only.

  • Edward says:

It’s a beautiful watch, but for a sec I was like, “Where’s the dial!?” Haha!

  • teri says:

Not long ago, I was driving past the Hermes store downtown and got stopped at a red light. It gave me time to peruse the goodies in the window. I happened to see a skirt suit, shown with accessories, that was so completely my aesthetic that I fell in love. Granted, I probably couldn’t find that exact same suit again, but I’m positive I could come close. So my haute couture/boutique splurge would be an Hermes skirt suit with all the necessary (to me!) accessories.

The watch above is stunning! I would so wear it. I know watches are going the way of the dinosaur, but I like them as jewelry items as much as I do as timepieces. And the one you’ve shown IS an exquisite piece of jewelry.

    • Portia says:

      Hi Teri,
Give it two seasons and you will see nearly the same suit in a slightly different shade and an extremely different fabric at the mall. Don’t worry, it’s coming.
As for watches, yes they are going the way of the dinosaur and I rarely wear them anyway, not for a decade since my last Guess watch ran out of batteries, but this is more than a watch. This is art to me, wearable art. So glad you liked it too.

  • Oh yes, a Hermes scarf or shawl. I’m a scarf/shawl/wrap lover. One can dream.

    • Portia says:

      yes Josephine Robertson,
TOTALLY with you on this. Until I met Jin there wasn’t a scarf in my wardrobe, except for a couple that were my Mums and still 16 years later smell slightly of her.
Having a scarf in shawl size means you can wear it 100 ways, though I usually just tie it around my neck and enjoy the feeling and the colours.

  • Tatiana says:

Since my 20s, I have always wanted a tweed Chanel jacket. I took a sewing class where the instructor took apart a vintage Chanel jacket to see and show us how it is made. Oh my! The craftsmanship and sewing technique put into that jacket was mind blowing. As an equestrian I’ve also longed for an Hermes scarf or shawl. I found several I was lusting over this past winter but could never figure out a way to justify the price.

    • Portia says:

      Het Tatiana,
He pulled apart a CHANEL jacket!! I am fainting here. Haute Couture? It would have been perfection, every stitch by hand, all the different stiffenings and underwork. ARGHHH! I think I just popped a blood vessel with jealousy, lucky you.
As for the Hermès scarf, wearing it is the justification. I bought a Missoni one a couple of years ago and it gets worn so much. Every time I tie it on I get a thrill of joy at the feel and the colours and the work, heaven.

There would be a lot of those things that I could name. But what is on the top of my list is a strand of South Sea pearls or Tahitian pearls. That and a Birkin bag.

    • Portia says:

      Hey Eldarwen22,
Yes, those black pearls are killer aren’t they?
Ahhhh, the Birkin. Most wanted and most annoying to use. They do look incredibly cool and I understand your desire. Hermès does everything right.

  • HeidiC says:

I know it seems ridiculous, but I would love to own a really gorgeous hat, like something the Royals wear to weddings, or a Kentucky Derby hat, or one of Audrey Hepburn’s from Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

    • Portia says:

      No Heidic,
Not ridiculous at all. I loved hats and did millinery as one of my electives while studying fashion. LOVE seeing someone walking down the street in a hat, it adds a million watts of style to an outfit.

  • Koyel says:

OMG that cashmere shawl…. That might be it for me, too. During my latest trip to Hermès to sniff their Hermessences, I tried on the shawl and really had to work hard to remind myself that I do not have 900€ to spend on anything that isn’t rent or a laptop.

    • Portia says:

      Hi Koyel,
Yes, I’ve found the one I want and should have snapped it up in Rome. Now I have some mules to help me find it. Not this week though.

  • Tara says:

Portia, I feel so out of touch, I hadn’t heard about Boy, so thanks for bringing me up to date. I’ve just Googled it and a Chanel exclusive fougere with floral tinges sounds interesting.

I’m not up on fashion but it’s fun thinking about what I’d pick. Probably a coat from Alexander McQueen.

    • Portia says:

OMG! Tara, I could just imagine you wearing McQueen. I particularly loved their honeycomb stuff a couple of years ago in black & gold, it was startling and desirable. They also do a good line is skulls, so dark.
One day we should do Selfridge & Co or Harvey Nics, check out their ranges. It’s fun to try them on.

  • Neva says:

Hmmmm…I think I would go for some delicate jewellery, a bracelet and ring probably. It’s always nice to have an addition in the jewellery department.

    • Portia says:

Like they say in Great Expectations, “Portable property” Neva. Always good to have some of that on you.

  • In general I find expensive watches to be aesthetically repugnant – truly ugly things on the whole, but this one at the top is the best I’ve seen for a long time.

If I could have one piece of haute couture or ludicrously expensive designer rip off, it would have to be a really beautiful, tailored suit. It’s the one thing I know I look good in.
