Winners and Cucumber

cucumberHuge rain tonight — I got home late!  Winners of the ALTAIA are DAS & Sun Mi — email evilauntieanita at gmail dot com with your address.

I have some body product here — the newish version of Norell — would y’all like that?  Enter a comment.  You know what I’m looking for?  Some body product that smells like cucumber.  That’s rare as hens’ teeth right now.  And it used to be everywhere!  Nobody’s stocking cucumber SCENTED cream at my drugstore except EOS in those tiny hand-pebbles.  There’s cucumber as an ingredient but that’s just a trick, lol.  Who can suggest a cucumber-scented body cream that isn’t cucumber/melon (UGH NO) or mint or tea or what have you?

I’m using the Method Cucumber hand soap right now and that’s delicious, by the way.  Frankly I’m surprised that cucumber-scented shampoos and body washes and lotions etc. aren’t everywhere because it’s a nice gender-neutral smell for people who are concerned about such things.  Cucumber melon is the devil.

Ha! And, as if on cue, Bath & Body Works has announced that they’re going to re-release several of their bestselling frags from the 1990s on May 27th — so we may very well have to endure another round of Cucumber-Melon-scented hell!

  • tiffanie says:

Cucumber melon is the devil. Indeed.

    Thanks for the giggle. :

  • Beth says:

The fragrance Shop has a cucumber oil that smells exactly like a cucumber! I know you can get unscented lotion from them and they can put the scent in or you could buy unscented lotion and make your lotion as potent as you want 🙂 I ordered from them many times and I love them. They have fabulous customer service. Hope this helps.

Hi guys! I bought Norell with babysitting money at the drugstore many years ago and I still love it. Cucumber I can’t help with, except to agree that cucumber/melon is horrible – I remember that smell from Bath n Body Works in every mall in the 90s.

  • Das says:

Yay, thanks for the ALTAIA draw!
I tried a Tocca perfume (and they make matching lotions) that had a strong cucumber note, but I don’t remember the name now. Not sure it’d be soli-cucumber enough though.

  • SamanthaL says:

I second the Yes to Cucumbers recommendation, I see that stuff everywhere!

I’m in a similar situation, but with cucumber liqueur…they used to stock it at Total Wine but now I can’t find it anywhere. It’s so lovely and refreshing with gin too, perfect for summertime cocktails.

  • tandaina says:

I adore cucumber, but they always throw the dang mellon in there and RUIN it. I HATE cucumber/mellon, why do they do that to such a lovely fragrance. Glad I’m not alone in my confusion and aversion to that combo.

  • Maureen says:

I used to love Norell on a friend of mine back in the day. Have never tried it myself, but would love a sample of it. I am not very fond of cucumber scents, but I remember somebody gave me a lotion by Liz Claiborne a long time ago that smelled like cucumbers. Can’t remember name.

  • Dina C. says:

I would love to sample the new Norell. I read about it, and sounds like my cup of tea. As for cucumber scented stuff, I was disenchanted by all the horrid melon cucumber hybrid offerings back in the 90s. Gag. Real cucumbers are great. Makes me want a BLT or some taziki sauce with a gyro.

  • Marilee says:

I think I have seen an Avalon Organics cucumber at some point. Also noticed that the Demeter website has body lotions in their scents. Haven’t tried either, though, to know if they truly smell like cucumber. I don’t like cucumber melon either!

  • Queen Cupcake says:

There is a gal on Etsy who seems to have a cucumber lotion. http://tinyurl.com/zcgvsqq

  • eldarwen22 says:

Nothing is coming to mind that is just cucumber scented. All I can think of is my high school days where BBW’s Cucumber Melon was the most popular scent with Clinique Happy after that. Yes, I’m that old. Then everything for a while was cucumber melon. It seems like nobody wears anything anymore because of either real or imagined “allergies” or they just don’t like it.

  • AnnieA says:

YesTo Cucumbers must have a lotion…

  • Ann says:

Howdy, dear! I’m wracking my brain to think of a true cucumber but nothing is floating to the top. But I do agree cucumber + melon = evil, evil, evil!! I adore the new Norell even though it’s not even in the same universe as the old one. But that’s OK. Good luck on your search and have a great day! Hugs to you …

    • Ann says:

P.S. Just tried a magazine insert of that Valentino that you wrote about recently — it really is nice: a lovely little slip of iris, suede and a bit of sweet. Almost like a sweet little cousin of Bottega Veneta, maybe? Will haunt Nordies or elsewhere to snag a sample. Thanks for the rec.

Had friends at university, a couple, who introduced me to Talking Heads. They both wore Caswell & Massey cucumber cologne (and wore it well). Does that NY-based chi-chi pharmacy — the name escapes me at the moment — have cucumber products?

  • Happyrock says:

Loved Norell “back in the day”. Would love to try the latest version of it.

  • pats133 says:

Boots in the UK have a lovely Cucumber UVA & UVB protection moisturising lotion. Its only a few pounds, plus is light in application and light on cucumber – i use it regularly. Never tried this Norrell – i find it being talked about in a few different circles now.

  • 123andreasd says:

    Hildegard Brauckmann cosmetics have some!

  • fleurt4fleurs says:

How about Caswell & Massey Cucumber (and Elderflower) Lotion? They made some amazing cucumber scented products years ago, very different than contemporary cucumber, clean, but really delicate ( ….before the evil appearance of Calone, my nemesis, but maybe not yours) I don’t know how the elderflower affects the overall scent. It might overwhelm the cucumber.

    • March says:

That’s the thing; will it smell cucumber-y? I bought a Yardley cucumber online and it’s a perfectly pleasant smell, but it isn’t cucumber. Hence my search for recommendations.

    • March says:

Also LOL calone makes me gag. Some of my crankier reviews involve calone.

  • High end: Wen has a cucumber body lotion that’s super-cooling, and just last week I came across one at Target for like $14. for a big ol’ bottle called something like “Hooray for Cucumber!” Love Norell, reminds me of my Mom!

  • Pookie says:

I used to wear Norell back in the mid 70’s. Smelled so good!
