Tokyo Bloom by The Different Company 2012

Hi there POSSE! Tokyo Bloom originally came to me in one of the LuckyScent Sample Packs. I went through that 0.7ml lightning quick. It then stayed on my To Buy List for years. Had a decant from Surrender To Chance and when I finished that went back to get some more but they had finished their run. OH NOOOO! Earlier in 2016 I finally bit the bullet and am now the proud owner of a bottle. I wanted to remind you of this beauty because it makes a perfect mid-season spritz.

Tokyo Bloom by Emilie (Bevierre) Coppermann for The Different Company 2012

Tokyo Bloom The Different Company FragranticaFragrantica

Fragrantica gives these featured accords:
Top: Galbanum, basil leaves, dandelion, cassis
Heart: Star jasmine, cyclamen
Base: Guiac wood, musk, amber

Tokyo Bloom: The softest green, a green feather, a green whisper, a green dream. Imagine green so perfectly wearable that it’s almost as if you’ve put on green tinted glasses and changed the way the world looks, through scent. A green both cool and warm, spring and an autumn, so easy to spritz and wear.

A lightly fizzy galbanum & basil lemonade opening which quickly becomes the sappy/milky green that they are selling as dandelion but which smells like a cross between nasturtium and hydrangea leaves. Yet, having made that terrible analogy realising that it too is a load of shite. Because by the time you get a handle on it Tokyo Bloom is already into soft, waxy, clean jasmine/cyclamen territory backed by a fluffy musk. I’m surprised that ginger and orange aren’t ingredients, also that the only resin is galbanum, though amber usually has some labdanum in its make up come to think of it.

Longevity is EdT worthy, projection moderate to light. Anyone in your close orbit will notice how fresh and clean you are. Without talking Tokyo Bloom down it would make a wonderful fabric softener scent.

LuckyScent says: Emilie Coppermann’s tribute to Japan’s fifth season conjures the tenderness of spring rain on a spring-blooming garden. The raspy fruitiness of blackcurrant bud, the slightly anisic basil and an unusual, milky dandelion sap accord shower different splashes of green in the top notes. The heart yields another type of moistness with cyclamen; star jasmine, which is spicier than real jasmine, adds its sensuous flesh to the delicate blend, carried by a gentle cloud of musk.
A wistful and delicate scent with a sensuous undercurrent, and a poetic tribute to the fleeting beauty of the “floating world” captured in classic Japanese woodcuts.

Posts like this make me wish computers had a “scratch and sniff” feature – ha! 🙂 It looks lovely but I wish I could smell it for myself.

  • Ann says:

Oooh, oooh, lovely, Portia! Sounds divine, and that bottle and green juice are to die for! I really need to explore the Different Company much more fully. Thanks!

  • HeidiC says:

Galbanum and basil? Sounds wonderful! Shame it doesn’t sound like it lasts very long, though. I haven’t tried any of TDC’s L’Esprit line. For colognes, I like FM’s Cologne Indelible (smells just like an orange grove in blossom), and Isabella Rossellini’s Manifesto wears kind of cologne-y on me. I agree with Tiffanie above about the Apres l’Ondee EdT — just gorgeous, which is great since even the modern formula EdT is getting hard to find!

  • Tiffanie says:

Colognes are among my favorite scents. Tokyo Bloom sounds perfectly green, and the bottle is strikingly beautiful.

I love Chanel’s EdC, Eau de Guerlain and Eau de Cologne Imperiale. Recently Apres l’Ondee EdT is my fave cologne-ish spritz. It has less citrus, more flowers, feels quite refreshing, and is fleeting like a cologne. I love it so dearly. Apres l’Ondee even meets one of my gold standards – I can wear it when have a headache or am recovering from one. No easy thing!

    • Portia says:

      Hi there Tiffanie,
You have a sensationally gorgeous line up of colognes. Yes, Apres Londee wears like a cologne on me too, though the very soft furry dry down whispers at me ofr hours.

  • Maya says:

I thought Tokyo Bloom was an edt. A friend had a sample of this. We both had the same experience as Azar. If it had any longevity at all, i think we both would have gotten decants. I do like TDC and am thinking of getting a fb of I miss Violet

    • Portia says:

      Hi Maya,
They are calling it L’Esprit Cologne. What a shame it lasts so poorly on you, normally I’m the one complaining of brief longevity.
      Isn’t I Miss Violet a great name.

  • Eldarwen22 says:

I don’t have any EDC’s in my perfume collection except vintage Bal and that lasts about 6 hours on me. I love green perfumes and wishing that there were more off them.

    • Portia says:

      Hi Eldarwen22,
I have the vintage Bal EdC too, yes it is a beast.
There are so many wonderful green fragrances but you need to really look for them because they don’t seem to get the same dazzle dazzle that the others get.

  • Musette says:

the only TDC I love (LOVE!) is Charms & Leaves – and it’s also a greeny-wet scent, though it feels a bit heavier than a cologne – but just a bit. This sounds right up my alley!

My fave colognes are Chanel’s Eau de Cologne (which smells much like 1932, which I also adore) – and 4711 – the Original, fabulous cologne!!!

ps. I always forget that you’re Opposite – you’re going into Spring(and colognes) now, just as we’re heading headlong into the heavier scents of Autumn and Winter

    • Portia says:

      Hey there Musette,
Yes, we are heading towards the sunshine.
4711 is still so good even in its modern incarnation.
Charms & Leaves, what a great name.

  • Azar says:

    Hi Portia,
My new/old favorite cologne is Eau de Rochas. It will be awhile, though, before I can put a dent in my big 14.9 oz bottle, as this vintage seems to last forever on me – and there is so much of it to use too! Sadly, I can’t say that for Tokyo Bloom. I drained my samples immediately. I love the opening but then it is just goes away – vanishes way too fast even for a cologne. I kept spritzing hoping for more but nothing happened and now it is gone. Funny how that goes…

  • Neva says:

Hi Portia, I haven’t tried anything from The Different Company but I like your description of Tokyo Bloom very much. I suspect I’d like this one because I adore green scents and the sappy/milky part sounds good.
I like colognes very much and generally think that they should be cheaper as you have to reapply them often. I usually use up a 50 ml bottle in a month. I like the Acqua di Parma Cologne range, especially Colonia Intensa.
Thanks to the sample of Le Galion’s Cologne Nocturne that I got from you, I discovered another beauty that I find full bottle worthy 🙂

    • Portia says:

      Hey there Neva,
I am LOVING Cologne Nocturne, there is quite a lot of air in my bottle.
Yes, the major cologne downside is the longevity, that’s a really good bit about Tokyo Bloom. It sticks around for about 3 hours on me. Then is a whisper of amorphous white musks and stuff.
