Grrrr Monday: Wonky computer on deck

computer
Grrrr … I’ve been trying to write my Posse post for the better part of two hours and my computer (Chromebook, actually) has been acting so wonky, that I just logged onto the Posse dashboard here and started winging it.

So the lengthy post I had planned is not happening. Sorry, dear Posse folks, but I’m sure you can empathize. The computer: Seems you can’t live with it some days, can’t live without it most others. And I know we’ve come a long, long way in this department, and we have so much to be thankful for, but it is frustrating when things go haywire, especially on deadline.

Any of you guys use a Chromebook? I’ve been pretty happy with ours except for the glitches it’s been burping the past few hours. I thought maybe the wireless mouse battery was dying, but it seems to be working OK on here.

Anyhoo, feel free to share your computer woes or anything at all that’s on your mind. I’ll say farewell for now, as I’m eager to get off this thing; maybe a good night’s rest will do it some good. I know it will for me as well, ha!

Have a great week, everyone!

Mine is actually funny – I can’t comment on the Posse site itself anymore. It tells me I have an ‘invalid security token’ – so I have to go back onto the WP page and comment from here. Patty suggests that I use a different thingamabob but the very fact that I can’t remember what the hell they are called (you know: Safari v. Edge v. whatever) suggests that It Ain’t Happenin’ xoxoo

    • Ann says:

Me either, ha! Are they called “browsers” — but who knows? But very glad you can still comment and post, even if it’s in a roundabout way, dear!

We had a laptop a few years back that started on fire. It was on the nightstand next to my husband one afternoon while he was napping, and started making loud snapping noises and smoke. He fortunately woke up and was able to toss it out into the garage where it burned up on the concrete floor. We were told this was caused by the batteries.

    • Ann says:

Yikes — that was a very close call!! A co-worker of mine’s caught on fire and it wound up burning her house down, so it’s pretty frightening stuff.

My laptop (cheap basic Dell) is now 5 years old and behaving more and more erratically, so I’m backing it up to the external hard drive every week and expecting ‘puter death At Any Moment. Yuck. But I bought the thing about three months after we bought Bookworm’s college computer of the same model, for under $400, and mine has lasted considerably longer than hers, so I guess I shouldn’t be surprised.

(When Gaze started college this year, I was shocked to find that Virginia Tech’s computer requirements were *considerably* more stringent than Yale’s. CONSIDERABLY. We paid $1500 for a Lenovo with the standard requirements. And he’s not even an engineering major! My nephew, who’s also a freshman at VT, *is* an engineering student, and his laptop cost $3500.)

    • Musette says:

Holy snakes and cabbage! Whatever happened to protractors!? And those little twirly things that engineers always use(d)? And pocket protectors!

    • Ann says:

Wowza!! You have my sympathy — who knew? And can’t believe Gaze is already in college — where does the time go?

  • Kate E. says:

My computer knows when my husband (tech support) is not around. Printers disconnect themselves, files go missing, things get wonky. I really should learn to deal with it myself but I just want them to work…I don’t want to know HOW they work. You have my sympathy.

    • Ann says:

Exactly, Kate!! It’s like they sprout evil grins, rub their hands together devilishly and say, “Oh, boy! She’s by herself now … let’s have fun!”

  • tiffanie says:

Sorry about the chrome book woes. I am ashamed to admit whenever I hear someone has a computer problem I think of The IT Crowd series and want to say, “IT Department, have you tried turning it off and on again?” Makes me smile every time. Hope things are better quickly.

Sort of relevant to this blog? My manuscript collection of essays just won a big contest and will be published next year — and a chunk of it is short lyric essays about perfume! There was some prize money, so I think I may have to TREAT YO’ SELF to some fragrance!

We had a microwave die a few days ago and just got a new one today. Amazing how we can’t live without a microwave. On a better note, I managed to find a bottle of Shisheido Feminite due Bois for a great price.

    • malsnano86 says:

I totally get that! I once had my microwave die at 4 pm on Christmas Eve, and pondered the situation for about 30 seconds before grabbing my purse and heading to the home store to buy another one before they closed at 5. It was CHRISTMAS EVE. I cook most of my veggies in the microwave. I make GRAVY in the microwave. I couldn’t wait until Dec. 26.

    • Ann says:

Amen!! We forget how much we take certain things for granted. and congrats on your wonderful find!!
