Byredo Mixed Emotions is “inspired” by the mess of the last year and the mixed emotions we have. I do NOT have mixed feelings about the last year – it was a suck from beginning to whenever the end is.
I had no idea what to expect, but I ran over to Fragrantica to see what the early sniffs were Byredo Mixed Emotions. and I left there thinking…. crap, it’s COVID in a bottle??? The comment reviews said “begins very strong, like a punch in the face… ” Huh? “Dirty armpits smell.” No way, not even.
Notes – black currant, mate, tea, violet leaf, birch and papyrus? I mean tea, violets and currant with some paper and road tar dusted on it.
My sister sprayed it and she literally recoiled on the spray and went “oof!” but really liked it after the open. I really was confused then. When I spray it, I get this lovely black currant, little tart, and then this lovely tea and birch start wafting up through. There is not scent nose punching involved for me at all. Just delightful wafting. ::: shrug :::
Here’s what I take from it, it actually is doing what the name says – Mixed Emotions. Some people went meh, boring, whatevs, others hated it, others loved it. I think it’s this lovely currant-infused tea with some raspy birch and h that isn’t as tarry as some can get and violet paper’ish feel. I loved it, and it lasts forever. Definitely mixed and interesting. The drydown is a birchy tea with just the slightest hint of currant. When I read so many of the comments on it, there were just a few that talked about the tea. This this is tea, tea, tea, tea. But I would caution anyone to try this first before you splash out for what you expect to be your next big tea scent – you may wind up with dirty armpits instead!

The saying goes “when life gives you lemons, make lemonade”…right? This COVID year has given all of us many lemons/challenges. For me, some of the challenges have been very difficult, yet, also there have been some surprisingly good things which have happened, which might not have happened except for the lockdowns. I’m grateful for the good.
In the case of a perfume called “Mixed Emotions” I say “yes, indeed”. I applaud Byredo for trying to make some lemonade out of the lemons of this year.

Hmmm. Is this the only house to launch a covid-inspired fragrance? I wonder if this has to do with Byredo being owned by private equity and someone had the great idea to find a way to ‘benefit’ from the situation. Weird.
I went to try it yesterday to a small perfumery. Due to Covid precautions only ONE person can be inside with the salesperson 🙁 there were five people waiting outside so I turned around and went back home. I know when I enter that shop, I’m at least half an hour inside 😀

Sounds…interesting? I have a hard time imagining wanting a scent to remind me of this past year, but then again I have been considering a new tattoo to commemorate getting through it. Different strokes!

Please, do NOT enter me! I smelled this at Nordstrom’s last week. It smelled nice and peachy on the paper strip, so I asked the SA to spray my arm. She warned me. It smells like Vicks vapor rub (camphor) very strongly on first blast and was rather unpleasant for a couple of hours. On the far drydown I could smell peach again. This is a hard pass for me. Everyone seems to smell something different!
I love tea scents, so I’d love to sniff this one! Violet leaf and black currant sound good too.

Sounds interesting- I haven’t felt compelled to buy any Byredo but to be fair haven’t tried that much either. The more perfume I have, the pickier I get about spending any amount at all!
