Mint condition

Sometimes inspiration just drops into your lap (in this case, my mailbox). When a lovely and generous perfume pal sent me a sample of L’Artisan’s Batucada, I tried it and liked it, but as often happens, life intervened, and I kind of forgot about it.

Now mint, and drink-inspired scents, have never been much of my thing. Although I do love a cup of mint green tea, especially after dinner (note to self: make a pitcher of this iced, pronto!).

So now a few weeks later, when a sweet sales associate mailed me some of Annick Goutal’s Nuit Etoilee, I liked it and was intrigued. Intrigued enough to wear it again and again, nearly draining my sample bottle. Intrigued enough to give the mint note a second look. Perhaps I’d been too hasty in dismissing it a while back as ho-hum, and now the universe was sending me a sign. So back into it I dove, trying out the Batucada, Guerlain’s Aqua Allegoria Mentafollia and CdG’s Sweet Nomad Tea. Now to get my hands on some AA Herba Fresca and Jo Malone’s White Jasmine and Mint.

Despite the obvious, these scents really are lovely for hot, humid days and offer a break from citrus, should you want a change. Another plus: Most are light enough to last just a few hours, and then they’re easily refreshed or just switch to another scent.

So what say you: Any mint scents float your boat? What else should I be trying?

BTW, I am seriously coveting that gorgeous Nuit Etoilee blue bottle — could a very rare FB purchase be in my future? Hmmm …

Ava Luxe Moroccan mint tea. One of my all-time faves.

  • Sam says:

I’m so pleased to learn Nuit Etoilee has a mint note–somehow I’d missed that in the previous reviews I’d read. I’m seriously craving mint in perfume these days, tho I haven’t found a fav. Ava Luxe Moroccan Mint Tea is on my list to try. (Mint! And tea!) But now NE is on my list, too–especially since I love most AG fragrances. Thanks for the review!

    • Ann says:

Thanks, Sam! When you do try the NE (and also the Ava Luxe), let us know what you think of them. And I love me some mint tea too!

  • sonomavelvet says:

Amouage Memoir Man has a mint note in it that I really like a lot. I know it’s supposed to be about absinthe but I think the way they layer the mint in the mix is quite lovely.

    • Ann says:

Thanks, I didn’t know that. I really like the Memoir Woman but have never tried the men’s. My must-sample list keeps growing and growing and growing …

  • nozknoz says:

I haven’t tried Nuit Etoilee and it doesn’t matter if I ever sample it – I’m bound to fall for that bottle sooner or later!

    • Ann says:

Yep, I’m right there with you! Usually I’m not much of a bottle connoisseur but there’s just something about that almost-frosted blue glass. Ahhh … (And wouldn’t it be drop-dead gorgeous in a mini?)

  • Julie says:

Another Herba Fresca fan – love it! Even wore it on my wedding day – we had a very casual outdoor wedding in August, so it was just the thing to keep me cool. Can’t think of any other mints that haven’t been mentioned. I’ve been meaning to try Moroccan Mint Tea by Ava Luxe but haven’t gotten around to ordering a sample.

    • Ann says:

How cool is that, Julie? I bet that was a great wedding scent. I really, really need to sniff it ASAP. I’ve heard good things about the Ava Luxe, so need to get on that one too.

      • Julie says:

Just saw it at my Sephora, so should be easy to find. I could send you a sample, as well (jasouza9 at hotmail dot com)

  • FragrantWitch says:

Hi Ann! I’ve not had much experience with mint but that Herba Fresca’s mint note was essentially smoker’s halitosis and Binaca. :Distort:
I’ll have to get my nerve up and try some others, probably the Geranium Pour Monsieur.
Do try the Kerosene line-I’ve not tried Creature yet but I really like Whips and Roses as well as Copper Skies. Great stuff!

    • Ann says:

Hi, lady! Glad to know you like the Kerosene line; it’s been on my radar for a little while now, but just getting around to it (with kids, you know how it is!). I think a tiny little part of my winces at the name, though, and may be holding me back, just a little — dumb, huh? But onward, into the sampling fray!

  • Ann says:

Hey, lady! I have an older version of Nikki, so not sure if it’s in there. You’re right — mint can be tricky, but it’s so nice when done right! We’ll both have to try the Malle. If I get a sample, I’ll happily share.

  • Patricia Hall Borow/Olfacta says:

Nikki de St. Phalle EDT, in its current form, has a slight mint note which I love. Mint is so difficult though! It’s either toothpaste sweet or strong and sour, like the absolute I’ve been trying to work with. I think it may be better in bath/body products than fine perfumes. But I’ve never tried Geranium pour Monsieur.

  • Don’t know if I have any mint frags, but an interesting concept nonetheless. Will have to see if this is a note for me to enjoy.

    • Ann says:

Give it a whirl when you get a chance; they are so nice in the heat and not too overpowering (at least not the ones that I’ve tried) …

  • Musette says:

I second Susan et al’s recommendation of Malle’s Geranium pour Monsieur. It’s one of my go-to scents for blistering days, when I don’t feel like breaking out an attar (it could happen!). Also, Liz Zorn has a Rose, Geranium and Mint that is lovely!!! I think it’s in her sale right now!

    xoxox

  • Masha says:

Heeley’s Menthe Fraiche is wonderful. I love Herba Fresca, much more than Mentafolia, actually. Mentafolia sort of fell flat for me, but HF’s combo of garden mints and fresh cut grass really won me over. Until the bottle was used up, it was my favorite perfume for morning runs.

    • Ann says:

Hi Masha! I knew there was one out there I was missing and the Heeley is it! I liked the Mentafolia fine and am eager to try the Herba Fresca. Thanks!

    • Teri says:

Here’s another vote for the Heeley Menthe Fraiche. It surprised me how much I liked this and how often I’ve been reaching for my decant.

  • I will have to give Nuit Etoilee another look! I thought it was nice but a little boring, though I do love the bottle. Worth trying again, along w/ Creature, Geranium pour Monsieur, and whatever else y’all come up with…thanks, Ann!

    • Ann says:

Hi, Sherri. Do give the NE another try or two and see if it doesn’t grow on you. And the small bottle isn’t too spendy, even if you’re not madly in love with it, but do love looking at it on your dresser 🙂 …

  • Susan Labben says:

Then you simply JUST try Frederic Malle´s Geranium Pour Monsieur, by Dominique Ropion! It has an absolutey gorgeous mint note and the drydown is just FAB!

It is as unisex as they come in my book (and in general I avoid unisex scents veering to the masculine side).

Check out Lee´s review of it here on the Posse:

    • Ann says:

Thanks! I think I have, a long time ago, but since I don’t remember it, I’ll definitely have to revisit.

  • Poodle says:

What timing! I just received a sample of a minty scent the other day, Creature by Kerosene. At first sniff I thought, ewww, no, I don’t think so. That blast of mint was a bit startling. I hadn’t looked up the notes yet so I was not prepared for mint. I hung in there though and it was weird, cool, minty, and green, and I think I like it. Even more strange is that Mr. Poodle noticed and complimented it. So the first test drive went well but I’ll need to try it again a few times before I decide if it’s FB worthy. I like weird scents and between the name and the mint it’s got that covered.

I need to try the Nuit Etoilee though. That bottle is really pretty, I agree.

    • Ann says:

That is good timing! Glad you’re liking the Creature, despite the wild start. I have not tried any of that line, so I’d better get hopping. The AG won’t knock your socks off at first, but if you’re like me, it kind of grows on you over time. When I smelled it on a shirt ready to go to the dry cleaners a few days ago, I was nearly sold.
