Why Yes, I Am a Terrible Person..

juryJury Duty.

Does anyone look forward to it? I don’t. I haven’t been called that often (you can read about one time here and another here) but I always show up. A week after my birthday I received a phone message telling me that I needed to call in to this number with my pin number and ID, etc., etc., etc. The message ended with a notation that if I had not received a paper summons that this message was sent in error and I should disregard it. Well, I had no paper, so I disregarded as directed.

Needless to type, I received a letter in the mail two weeks ago from the courts reading that I had to show up at the corner of Crack and Addicted at 8:30 am today to explain why I wantonly ignored my civic duty by not calling in. Uhhhm, because either you didn’t actually mail it to me or our lovely postal people forwarded it into another dimension? Sooo, I am facing possible fine or even jail time or worse, service.

I do have two things going for me. Not only do my employers not pay for Jury Service, but I’d have to pay to have someone cover for me so there is a financial hardship. Second, I think that the service is at traffic court, so even if I’m chosen the trials invariably are a one-day affair. But I plan upon making myself as unappealing as a potential juror as possible.

Now I won’t be so disrespectful that I’ll be wearing shorts, but I might give myself a healthy spritz of MKK. Or better yet. Fermez yes Yeux (you knew I would get scent in there somewhere..)

My company pays me for the days that I attend jury duty so I was happy to go there, bring my laptop along, and get some work done without all the interruptions and meetings that being at the office brings. Was a terrific 3 days. ๐Ÿ™‚

The last time I was called, a few years ago, they announced that they were looking for jurors for a long trial, and asked everyone who could serve for at least four weeks to line up at the window. The line was so long that I was excused before I got halfway there. High unemployment rates are good for something, I guess.

OMG! I was just called too and I must also be a terrible person because I will do whatever I can to get out of it! I love the idea of Cannabis Rose – do you think that would work? ๐Ÿ™‚ Best of luck!

    Cannabis Rose?
I have never been called, but it would certainly disrupt my life so am not complaining!

I love jury duty, but never get chosen, because I am terrible about assuming people must have done something to get arrested. I am fair minded, and would not have any problem focusing in on whatever the actual issue was, but it’s pretty hard to get arrested (to the extent of needing a trial) for not doing anything whatsoever. Oddly enough, it’s always the prosecution who excuses me. (Which makes me think they’re over-reaching)

I was going to suggest Secretions Magnifique, but that right there MIGHT get you arrested for mere suspicion!

I’ve been called for jury duty three times now. First time, I was nursing a baby under six months and was able to get out of it by explaining that situation. Second time, it was for regional circuit court and I was never even required to drive the hour there, because all the cases I might have been needed for pled guilty. Third time I was summonsed for the local court and only had to show up once. Luckily, I wasn’t selected for that jury either.
