Perfume Posse in New York

new york perfume shoppingIt was last-minute, very little planning, but way fun. I had a potential thing I had to do in New York, once I found out for sure I was going a few days before I went, I thought, hey, maybe Miss March can bus it up. She did, and the adventure was on.

I texted her something about not being sure about my footwear choices when I got on the plane, so we ducked off to shoe shop first. It is a burden.  Shoes all fixed, we found this weird place for a Japanese restaurant – the second floor behind a hair salon. As soon as we walked in, we could have been anywhere in Japan. It felt so real, and we were the only ones speaking English in the place. Delicious food.  I’ll never remember the name of it, but it was in on 32nd and about 5th, second floor behind the hair salon.

Friday was the big day. We had lots of places to go by.  Osswald first.  Put address in phone app, plotted subway ride. Had delicious pita hummus concoction before bitchery got real.  Got to address, looks like apartment. I’ve been to Osswald before, I know they are not in an apartment.  Double-check address.  Oops, 331 Broadway is really 331 West Broadway (making up the number, but something like that).  Okay, easy six-block walk, right?  I know all of you native New Yorkers are giggling at this point.  It takes about 10 blocks in the windy cold to make a dent in getting to the 200s.

the.struggle.is.real.

We find subway, replot, land closer to the 300 block of West Broadway.  Osswald, as always, is a delight.  March will cover all of her fun finds on Wednesday this week as she caught up on some releases she’d missed the last year or so.  The smart, fun and knowledgeable Josie was just a joy to spend time with. If you are in Osswald and fall into Josie’s hands, you will be happy. Turns out she reads The Posse, so this is kindred spirit day for all three of us.

We reluctantly leave Osswald and head – oh, cheesecake at Eileen’s!  Holy rap traps, batman, that was amazing cheesecake in a weekend all about cheesecake.  As a Denverite used to cheesecake being disappointing and mostly tragic here, I’d almost forgotten how delicious cheesecake can be. Now I remember.

Leave Eileen’s and head for Greenwich to see Enfleurage, then walk down to Frederic Malle.  I wanted to smell the new Cologne Indelible and see if they had The Night tucked behind a dark counter somewhere.  Cologne Indelible is a gorgeous orange blossom, and it has that greenish note feel like Frederic Malle Carnal Flower.  A cologne in all the best sense, but also very posh. Timing for spring/summer is perfect.  I’ll have more to say about it in a later review, but as with all things Ropion, I love it.

Josie had already told us that the Malle boutique did have The Night  – their very middle eastern scent available in Dubai for a hefty price tag.  We asked, and I felt like when I said the words, “do you have The Night” it was like some curtain had descended blocking out all leaks as she reached under the counter for the small vial and put a drop on each of us.  Yup, oud, rose, amber.  Rich, medicinal, pungent, and then it takes a very posh Ropion turn into that something extra.  Yes, it is traditional, it is clearly full of great materials. I’m not even going to get into cost anymore.  If you’re willing to cough up the cash for it because you can and because you love it enough, then it’s worth it.  There is nothing lacking in this at all for an oud scent.  There is nothing lacking in this at all for a Ropion via Frederic Malle scent.  Malle didn’t screw it up, nor did Ropion, that’s all I’ll say.

I think there might have been more cheesecake involved that day. Oh, yeah!  Annick Goutal. March will have more to say about that because it was her insistence that she had to just step in and whiff the collective AG smell that got us there.  They were great, the shop was great, the new L’Ile au Thé green tea scent is great, and I’m working on some combinations with other Goutal scents, it has some versatility.

We minced – listen, when I say minced, March asked me if I was trying to find a way to walk without using my feet. I said yes, that was it exactly.  Owwwwww.

Long day, my feet were glad to get a rest.

Saturday was going to be High Line/Chelsea Market day.  We sub over to Chelsea Market, and that place is great.  We eat little baby angel donuts, buy a great gardening hat, buy a Fat Bitch or Fat Witch brownie for later, then climb up to the High Line.  The High Line, for those of you that don’t know, is a rail line that was converted into an elevated garden in the Chelsea area of New York.  It is beautiful and well worth the time to go walk it.

Is it cheesecake time yet?  Yes, yes, it is!  Off to the upper east side to visit Two Little Red Hens and have some of their cheesecake. Subway is all screwed up, so we have to backtrack a couple of times to get a train that will get us the 86th. Ah, the land of milk and cheesecake is open.  And it is deeelicious, the perfect cheesecake in existence.

You know, we ARE on the upper east side, not that far away from Bergdorf, which we hadn’t planned to visit, but, well, because, there.  Bergdorf beauty counter, here we come.  We go and plop down in JAR and revisit some faves, March catches up on all the 17,000 Piguet releases that have happened in the last two years.  We meander by Tom Ford, and they of course are pushing the latest Tom Ford Noir Extreme under our noses, which is annoying, but then not at all.  I didn’t really care one way or the other for Tom Ford Noir, but this Tom Ford Noir Extreme is something else,  OMG, yum!!!  March does not love Dior Feve Delicieuse like I do.  How can this be?!?!  We both find the perfect shade of Tom Ford Lipstick.

I probably missed a thousand things, but I’ll give more detail on some of the things I ran across in another review.  Sunday was time to go home, but my flight was canceled.  I wasn’t completely on board for the only option of United paying for a 1.5-2 hour taxi rid to Newark to catch a flight, so I spent the night in lovely Flushing and came home Monday morning.

Exhausting and fun and sad we didn’t have enough time ahead of time to catch up with anyone in the area, but I wasn’t even sure it was going to happen until way late in the game.

Which one of my finds are you the most interested in?  I’ll do a drawing and the winners will get the sample they mention in the comment!

I’d love to try the Cologne by Malle, and a slice of any of the cheesecakes!

  • Claudia D. says:

Sounds like a great time! I would love to try The Night, please. 🙂

But the Tom Ford Noir Extreme would make me happy, too! Thanks for the giveaway!

  • Ingeborg says:

I would love to hear more about the Annick Goutal. I so want to find a real love in that line, but have had no luck with those I tried so far. Oud perfumes are not for me, while a lot of citrus and tea scents fit my skin chemistry. NYC must be so perfect for a short visit, I hope to visit sometime in the years to come.

  • Monoatomic says:

I’ve just today received my big splurge from Barney’s – a 1er Mai candle, so you can probably guess I’d vote for the Cologne as first choice. Though I’ll have to try L’Ile au Thé sometime, I seem to have good luck with Goutals and that sounds lovely. And The Night sounds fantastic… I think I’ll need another trip to NYC…..

  • Kandice says:

What fun! Thanks for taking us along on your adventure. I’ve only been to New York once on business. I would love to go back one day when I could explore more. I would love to try the new FM Indelible. Being a fan of orange blossom this is right up my alley.

  • Kizzers says:

Oh you’ve awakened the lemmings ! I’ve not sample binged for a while so I need to remedy that soon. Id love to find a Malle that’s really me so I’d like to try the indelible. I’d also like to find a Goutal that doesn’t turn swampy on my skin, so the green tea one would be good to try.
    Must.find.NY style.cheesecake. In Scotland. ‘Le Sigh’ ????

  • Pixel says:

Did you have any proper New York pizza? My DH grew up in NY, it is best not to disagree with him about Correct Pizza. 🙂

I’d love to try the Tom Ford. OR The Night. OR Feve Delicieuse. See how easy I am to please?? hee hee

  • Petunia says:

It sounds like you girls had loads of fun in NYC. I would love to sample the new Goutal tea scent. Thanks for the draw!

  • imapirate007 says:

Since you’re a cheesecake fan, have you ever tried the Italian-style cheesecakes? I used to live near a great pastry shop called Veneiro’s in the East village. Italian cheesecake is like a meal in itself. Also many italian pastries use marzipan/almond paste- which is my favorite smell in a fragrance

    • Patty says:

I have not, i don’t think. I really should try it sometime, but it sounds so dense! What am I saying, cheesecake to start with is dense. 🙂

  • Ashley A says:

That trip sounds amazing. I am so happy I get to live vicariously through your sniffing adventures! I’d love to try the Malle Cologne, it sounds perfect for summer, which I am SO SO ready for.

  • Bobbie says:

So much fun to read about your adventure! Osswald and the AG boutique are on my to-do list. Last time in New York, the weather was so bad I spent all my shopping time under one roof at Bergdorf’s. Plenty there to keep me busy and the SA’s were nice and helpful. Looking forward to March’s description of the trip.

  • Caroline says:

So envious, I heart NY big time–need to plan a trip prior to summer heatwaves. Ropion fangirl that I am, I’m quite interested in trying Cologne Indelible (no rose ouds here). My preferred TF lipstick is Crimson Noir–what did you guys end up with?

    • Patty says:

Sorry, running through here trying to answer any questions. March did the Moroccan Rose, I think that’s the name, I knwo it had Morocco in it. It’s a matte. I did the brilliant in Ravenous, which is just the best lipstick in the color pink ever.

  • Divalano says:

You know, I love their red velvet but I forgot about Two Red Hens for cheesecake. And look, I can remedy that with them only about a 10 minute walk from me. Imagine that! But let’s talk about Cologne Indelible. Surely I don’t need another neroli scent, yeah? How musky is the musk, and will I be able to smell it at all? Yes, must try.

And I’m glad I’m not the only one curious about L’Ile au Thé. I love the scent of tea & invariably (except for Tea For Two, which is heavier on spice than tea on me) tea scents fade to a mess of boring after an initial “wow, this is IT”. Must go find out if Annick Goutal has made a miracle or not 😉

    • Patty says:

I’m officially envious. We did get that Brooklyn Blackout cupcake at Two Red hens, but it was pretty battered, though still tasty, by the time we dug into it at like 9 that night.

The CI isn’t that musky. But my nose isn’t supremely tuned for musks, some are anosmic. I’d at least sniff it to see, but I don’t think you’ll find it with enough musk in it, if you want to get some whiffs of it.

I think the green tea thing was fab. Not sure it’s a miracle, it’s very Goutal, but we both really loved it immediately.

  • Mariann says:

Like the others, I totally go for a real New York cheesecake. But since that’s not a option, I’m also interested in Cologne Indelible. I am on a Malle sampling binge and love orange blossom.

  • Julie L says:

You two are so chic and fun! Just jetting around NYC for the weekend- how fun! Since I’ve never tried Malle yet, at all, that would be my choice. Too bad JAR doesn’t give samples though. I just read some older stories on that line and am so intrigued! Thanks for the draw!

  • Winterlude says:

That sounds like a fantastic weekend! Except for the part about your poor feet, I hear that. Last time I was in NYC I thought I made a good shoe choice, a sensible choice, but after a morning/afternoon of walking, culminating at the HIgh Line, I decided to go barefoot. Barefoot! As disgusting as that is, I think it was either that or become a cripple. After the High Line I put my shoes back on and insisted we go straight to the hotel and have a restorative G&T. Or two.
Having enjoyed every Malle scent I have tried, I would love to have a sniff of Carnal Flower or Indelible.

    • Patty says:

I always think I’m a great walker because I love to walk, do a lot of it, my workouts entail walking/running. Then I go to New York or Paris and walk all day and realize how truly weak I am in that regard. 🙂

  • Dina C. says:

Oh my word! What a weekend of fabulosity! Paint me green with envy. (Actually wore Gucci Envy yesterday, so that’s very apropos.) I’ve done the walk-all-over-NYC-until-my-feet-kill thing, so I don’t envy that part, but the scents! wow! and the yummy foods! mmmmmm. Both the Cologne Indelible and the AG green tea scent sound amazing. I’d love to sniff either one. Thanks Patty. Looking forward to March’s reviews, too. 🙂

    • Patty says:

That green tea thing was pretty amazing. I’m excited about mixing it with other Goutals, it seems to fit perfectly in the combining category or by itself!

  • Vanie says:

Sounds like you had a fun few days! It’s been years since I went to NYC.
Please enter me for the Cologne Indelibile.

  • Connie says:

I would be thrilled to try Feve Delicieuse, I have good luck with Dior’s Private Collection. Sounds like you had a fantastic cheesecake-fille dime!

  • sarahpatto says:

Dang, you two. That sounds like a really fun trip.

  • Laurels says:

It all sounds like fun, and my diet must have turned into a lifestyle, because I didn’t feel any terrible pangs of desire despite the repeated references to cheesecake. Assuming The Night (possibly the greatest perfume name ever) is off the table, I’d like to try the Cologne Indelible.

    • Patty says:

Of course The Night is a possiblity, you really don’t think I’d leave without a bottle tucked in my luggage, did you? 🙂

  • Neva says:

Mmmm, perfume and cheesecake – that’s the right kind of adventure! I’m glad you had so much fun. I’d love to try Cologne Indelible ever since I’ve read the first review…

  • Nemo says:

I would love to hear more about the Tom Ford Noir Extreme 🙂 It sounds like a very cheesecake and fun filled trip!

    • Patty says:

I am pretty in love with that Tom Ford Noir Extreme. Not sure it’s great for summer, but I will be living in it this fall and winter!

  • sunnlitt says:

Thanks for the lovely travel-tales. So, happy to hear that you and March were able to share a weekend. I would love to hear a little bit more about that Tom Ford lipstick!!
As for fragrances, I would love to sniff the Cologne Indelible. That would be wonderful!

    • Patty says:

It was Ravenous for me, a blue-pink that was perfection. I can’t wear pink lipstick normally, so it was great! It was in the shine or brilliant part of the lipstick line. It was weird, though, getting lipstick applied by a guy who has better skin than I’ve ever had in my life, and my skin is pretty good now and was great when I was younger.

  • flowergirlbee! says:

that was a super fun read…i really want to smell cologne indelible..love me some ropion!! thanks for the giveaway : )

  • FeralJasmine says:

Please enter me for Feve Delicieuse. I haven’t missed Manhattan in a long time, but I did miss it while reading your adventure.

  • Rina says:

Oh Monsieur Ropion, how I love you so! Anything he’s made, touched, thought about, I need to try! What a fun weekend! I miss NYC. Glad you both had a good time and a safe (albeit complicated) trip home.

  • joannawnyc says:

Glad you enjoyed your visit here! Cologne Indelible, please 🙂

    • Patty says:

Thanks! Those Broadyway blocks tho! I can’t be in NYC more than like three days without looking for any exit, but it is such a great place to visit.

  • Tena says:

Assuming the cheesecakes are not available to sample, I would love to try the Malles Cologne. I have been looking for a nice OB scent.

    • Patty says:

We had a running joke about all the things we wanted to buy to eat and couldn’t fit in our stomachs, that we would just wrap it up in a napkin, put it in our purse for Sunday. 🙂 I wish I could do the cheesecake sample, it was a feast.

  • Elisa P says:

Wow! I’m beginning to think I’d like NYC better if I lived somewhere else. The daily subway thing can render one homicidal. Although it’s nice to have so many fragrance boutiques on such a small island. I like Osswald as well but find the interior decor too sterile. Very Soho I guess. They were nice enough to let me smell almost all the Amouages. Assuming you got The Night, I’d love to sample that 😉 Glad you enjoyed your trip.

    • March says:

Both of us got a little irritated about the weekend closings…. you have to go downtown to go uptown blah blah. I think trying to get to Red Hen I pitched a small hissy fit and said, if they tell us the next station’s sending us in the wrong direction, eff it we’re catching a cab. And I avoid cabs in NY, so…. wait, I loved the interior of Osswald, I couldn’t stop staring at the backlit display of minis! Apparently that’s only part of the collection. Honestly, I’d have to be made of sterner stuff to live in NYC, although I love to visit. Daughter’s saving up to move there this summer, so I’ll finally have a floor to sleep on. 🙂

  • poodle says:

I want to know what the perfect lipstick shades were.

    • March says:

Patty got I don’t know what all. I got this FIERCE dark plum. Moroccan Rouge.

    • Patty says:

Mine was a pink, Ravenous, the brilliant shine one, not the matte. It is the perfect pink for a person like me who almost never can wear a pink lipstick. Cool, into the blue tones, really perfect!

  • Ann says:

What a fun (and cheesecake-filled) adventure! So glad you got to go and that you and March were able to hang out and hit all those cool spots!

    • March says:

Ehrmagerd the cheesecake. This is totally my fault, I *love* cheesecake and Patty of course was game. I had a Cheesecake Map. Don’t tell anyone, but I think we ate something like seven slices in two days.

  • Cat McNeal says:

I’d love to try the new Tom Ford noir extreme!!
