Snow up to your butt, freezing cold? Or has your winter been more tropical?   What Perfumes to Wear?   Here’s the Posse list for Best Perfumes for Winter!  Make sure to find more winter favorites at Grain de Musc, Now Smell This, The Non Blonde, Bois de Jasmin.

<<<<<  This is the winter I always want

But what I usually get is this>>>>>>>>>>>>

Musette:  LOL!  I always want my winter to look like <—— but lately it’s been looking like frozen corn dust in Nebraska.  I’ve been wearing the vaunted No5, which has been getting solid love on the Posse lately – but when it drops into negative double digits I reach for Neela Vermeire’s Bombay Bling  and her peppery Trayee.  Both just shriek sunshine & heat & sunshine and they do my po’ frozen custard heart good!  I’ve also been reaching for the vintage Arpege extrait I got from Surrender to Chance (and if you see me on the sidewalk, I suggest y’all lock that stuff UP.  I will be up to No Good, eyeing the vintage bottle from whence that precious vial came…just sayin’ 😉  I also spritzed a LOT of Amouage’s newest, Beach Hut (Woman) which I will review anon – but Beach Hut!  Yaaasss!  Pushed back on the Vortex, HORD!   and…omg!  I almost forgot!  Amouage Epic!  It is thermonuclear strong but the drydown and Next Day it is one of the most perfect scents ever worn!  I do the whole shebang, shower gel/lotion/edp sprintz, then I go to bed.  By morning, it’s perfect and the quick reap of the lotion after my morning ‘bits & pieces’ shower’ creates the perfect veil of scent.  Clad in that (and some warm clothing, of course 😉  Winter cannot touch me!

Portia:  so I have a few Best Winter Perfumes that got a LOT of wear in the cooler months.  Ambre Mythique by Maitre Parfumeur et Gantier will warm you through with it’s delicious mix of vanilla, tonka, labdanum and a surprise hit of lavender.  Tobacco Nuit by Atelier Cologne is a herbal and resinous tobacco. Very interesting and smoky with a sweet kick.  Sogno Reale Talismans Collezione Preziosa by Mendittorosa is a boozy, aquatic  amber with a healthy dose of animal in the background. Happily weird at the start and softly beautiful dry down.  Dama Koupa by Baruti is Ah May Zing! It has a dry woods and macaron vibe with a totally unexpected use of mint. Mainly an iris scent but the backing accords make this really interesting.  Sakura by Dior Couturier Collection is a lively white floral that will hit the spot in the cooler months.  Suede Osmanthe by Perfumery Generale is the grown up sister of Lutens Daim Blond with some dry black tea leaves and an extra zing of osmanthus. Suede never smelled so good.  Parfum de Maroc by Mandy Aftel got some wear and was re-released this year for the holidays. Check it out if the idea of a dusty Indian spice shop could be your bag.  Ambergreen by Oliver & Co needs a sniff too. It’s a freaky mash of its title and will blow your mind. Starts out zingy and sharp green that melts into warm amber.  Shalimar by Guerlain is an eternal choice for me, winter seems to bring out its warmer, cosier aspects. It’s like wearing a fragrant golden cloud.  Mohur by Neela Vermeire Creations as always got spritzed at least weekly. Those spicy roses just can’t be beaten.

Ann:  I’m currently testing the yummy Tom Ford Vanille Fatale that Patty is loving, but I think I need a bit more time with it. I’ve only got a spray so far and I’m really more of a dab girl, so we’ll see. But my other winter loves are in no doubt, wrapping me in (mostly) gourmand goodness: Guerlain’s oh-so-rich  Encens Mythique, and the wonderfully cozy comfort of my fave vanilla duo, Le Labo Vanille 44 (another nod to Patty) and Indult Tihota. And not to forget Guerlain’s Cuir Beluga, which is lovely on its own, but I especially enjoy it because it puts me in mind of their late, great Iris Ganache.

Patty:  Tom Ford Vanille Fatale. That’s preeeetty much it.   Okay, not really. Well, yeah, it is for the last week or so!  I rely on some of my favorite winter scents because it’s rare to add a new one for me.  Le Labo Vanille 44, Ormonde Jayne (all!), CdG Tea – it’s called something else now, right?  Incense scents, lots of them, the Vox Humaine from Sauf, Unum Lavs.  I did get some diffusers that you fill with water, add some scent to, and those have been pumping out the Fornasetti Otto and Thymes Frasier Fir all winter. I wish I could figure out how to break into my Unum Lavs room spray so I could throw some of that in there.  Maybe I’ll just spray it in. Oh, yeah, that will work.  I rediscovered Kilian Pure Oud this winter too.  Lord, I forgot how much I love that.

What are you wearing this Winter?  What kind of Winter are you having?  Is it even Winter where you are (shhhh!)

My cuddliest, spiciest, and/or booziest scents have been in heavy rotation: Bois des Iles, Ambre Sultan, En Voyage Zelda, UmmaGumma, Al-Rehab Choco Musk (nothing like smelling like a cup of hot cocoa in winter), Muscs Kublai Khan, Bond No. 9 Andy Warhol, and Boyfriend. Oddly, I’ve also really liked the clean-but-smoky Encens et Lavande, which I would not have expected to be so uplifting in cold weather.

  • Ana says:

So I’ve been on a rose fragrance kick as of late so my top scent has been vintage Rose Poivree (yes, the sweaty one that Patty can’t stand). ED Flowers Sultry Rose, Mancera’s Roses Greedy, Heeley’s Hippie Rose as well as Rossy/Eau de Protection by ELDA are also serious contenders. After overdosing on the aforementioned roses, I will recuperate with Gucci (brown, 2002) and can only thank Patty for turning me onto that beauty!

The colder weather has me wearing vintages; Arpege, My Sin, Shalimar, No5, Coco, and Habanita. I’ve been wearing and sampling DSH’s animalic perfumes, Auphorie Binturong, Papillon Salome, Areej le Dore Flux de Fleur, Tom Ford Amber Absolute, Chanel Coromandel, Bois des Isles, 31 Rue Cambon, Beige, and Tauer L’Air de Desert. I was also recently introduced to L’ArtisanParfumer Al Oudh. I look forward to researching everyone’s suggestions that I’m no familiar with!

  • Sarah says:

Love all the mentions. Vintage Arpege? Oh boy-sounds heartbreakingly dangerous. Glad I’ve never had a sniff. Been loving Ormonde Jayne Woman and MFK PROM. When it’s really winter (yes-whining that real winter has been MIA for years) I play with Habanita, Youth Dew and Clinique Aromatics that belonged to my beloved long gone Aunt Jane.

We’ve had several weeks of weather switching between frigid (well, I mean, for *here* — in the teens/low twenties) and warmish (meaning upper 40s and 50s), and I’m truly shocked none of my family has yet gotten sick.

Loving many of these choices — especially Musette’s 😉 and making notes of others to sample. XO y’all.

  • Tara C says:

I am in the eternal summer of San Diego right now, so it’s sometimes hard to work in my usual heavy-hitters like Amouage Memoir, Rundholz 3.April.1968, Absolue Pour le Soir and Kilian Back to Black. But I’ve been able to wear Tauer LADDM and Au Coeur du Désert, Borneo 1834, Chopard Wish, Fève Délicieuse, Mitzah and Tihota.

  • Ann says:

Yum!! Love everyone’s picks and some new stuff that sounds fabulous, too! Patty, I need to know more about those diffusers you mentioned — ’cause I needs me one of those! Thanks, dear, you rock!!
