March Drives Alllll The Way to LUSH

Hey, friends. I’ve already gotten ahold of some of your book recommendations (thanks to whoever mentioned the Marlow Murder Club, and also The Housemaid lol), and I’m reviewing a lovely classic fragrance on my next post. Today, though? I finally sucked it up and went to LUSH and you’re going to hear about it.

missed the damn exit again

For me, the nearest LUSH is an hour’s drive through the desert, all broken pavement and flying rocks and tumbleweeds and velociraptors lurking in a desolate, sun-blasted hellscape, in order to reach “civilization” (okay, Albuquerque), unlike Tom who has to powder his nose and walk down the block, and I haven’t been in a LUSH in … years? Sometime pre-pandemic. The smell of that LUSH store overwhelmed me, and I never went in if I had teens in tow, so they couldn’t buy some stupid glitter bomb. Anyhoo, I’d heard of Sticky Dates but Cinnamon and Tom talking about it sealed the deal.  While I was there, I asked the nice gal to point me toward anything else seasonal and cozy since it’s that time of year. The LUSH store here turned out to be in an outdoor mall which I think made the smell less intense.

oh look, a rock cracked my windshield

I sniffed most of what was on offer, in line with the “smells good” category of scents we’ve been kicking around on the Posse recently, rather than high art. Here’s what I wound up with, in no particular order:

Sticky Dates – oh my goodness this smells delicious, and it’s got an undertone of something earthy (i.e., actual earth) and smoky so it’s not overly sweet. I bought a little bottle of shower gel, but I might order the bigger one. I think it also comes in a body scrub and maybe a lotion. Also, Tom was right about Grass – what a fantastic grassy-green smell. I sniffed but did not buy, I’ll reconsider next spring or summer when I’m wanting something non-gourmand.

Turmeric Latte – doesn’t that sound … revolting? I thought so. I was wrong. Benzoin, tonka, vanilla. “Spritz yourself all over to reveal this rich, warming scent, with milky praline undertones.” It’s rich and sweet with a touch of bitterness that keeps it from being cloying. They were out of the smaller perfume bottles so I bought a decant online. There’s also a “massage bar” which is basically a generously-sized solid perfume, and which probably would have been sufficient for my needs.

Chelsea Morning – “A sweet, sunny and buttery perfume … with bright, biscuity notes and a hint of citrus, tonka and butterscotch create a sweet but not syrupy fragrance; lemon myrtle gives a sunny, citrus quality; fenugreek for a spicy undertone.” I couldn’t decide how I felt about this one? It went from “no” to “oh yes, absolutely” over the course of about fifteen minutes. This is another LE scent and they have two sizes of the perfume bottles plus a much less expensive stick solid.

Snow Fairy – I think this is a regular winter one? It instantly took me back to the years of my kids using their favorite strawberries and cream shampoo, only richer and fancier. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it. I got the shower gel.

The usual caveats: there’s some overlap between their bottled scents and their body products, and which thing is available in what format is kind of scattershot. Also if ordering anything online read the fine print since they put micro-glitter (ugh) in random products.

Have you tried any of this nonsense? Does the smell of the LUSH store make you want to cry and/or run away? Is it gourmand season for you now … or never?

Now it’s date season DH bought me 3 whole boxes of medjools (my favoured hypo snack) I may need the shower gel.
In fact I may need a 17mile road trip to top up the car battery when we get home

Omg!!! I loooooove Sticky Dates. I’m so glad you tried and enjoyed it. If I weren’t drowning in scents, I’d pick up some Turmeric Latte and Chelsea Morning–both sound great to me. Instead, I’ll just long for those.

I haven’t been to a Lush store in years but I always enjoyed them. The smell was part of their ambiance. lol. I have gotten curious about Sticky Dates after everyone is singing it’s praises, but I still don’t like the name.
I like the fun pictures that you put on this post.
And if you didn’t see my response to you telling me about Une Fleur de Cassie. Thank you. It’s all Fragrantica’s fault.

    • March says:

I did see your response, and you’re welcome. It’s an easy mistake to make, for sure. I don’t care for that particular Malle, but that’s okay. It’s not boring, that’s for sure.

We have no Lush retail anywhere near where I live, not even in the state, and I rarely travel these days although I have been to Abq several times in the last few years and apparently missed out. No doubt there would be a spending free-for-all if ever I did enter a Lush store–it’s gourmand season 24/7/365 in VerbenaLuvvr world! 🙂

    • March says:

Well you know you can order that stuff online, right? Which I almost did just to avoid the drive lol. There are times I miss living in a big city where Saks, Nordstrom, etc. were so close by. But there are trade-offs.

Yes, in my years of hauling teenagers to the mall, Lush and Bath n Body Works both made me want to run, screaming, for the nearest exit. However, with so much talk about Sticky Dates, I really want to smell it eventually. Is it limited edition? It will probably be gone by the time I get to the mall again.

    • March says:

Oh lord, BBW. Yeah, I didn’t want to go in there either and it was across from Abercrombie with their terrible fragrance hahaha. Sticky dates is LE I believe, but I have no idea “how” limited.

  • cinnamon says:

Ya know, velociraptors seem to show up in our posts every once in a while but no other dinosaurs. Wonder what that is about… Oh, Lush stores. The one here seems to have tackled the insane smelliness. Maybe super-extractors. I bought Turmeric Latte blind a couple of years ago, liked it, but ended up divesting. Will def be replacing the little bottle of Dates when it’s gone. I think it might be LE so a bigger bottle is needed. Chelsea Morning sounds delectable. Plus, that name …

    • March says:

Velociraptors are a running joke with Musette, sort of a general stand-in for trouble/drama/danger. I know, the name Chelsea Morning! I think you might really like it.

  • Dina C. says:

Really nice reviews, March! I’m glad you had a good time sniffing the Lush products and found some winners. I put Grass on my Christmas wish list. I really liked it a lot.

    • March says:

Grass was lovely! It’s not my mood at the moment, but I’m pretty sure it’s a regular item and I’ll want some when I start dreaming of spring… I hope Grass winds up in your stocking.

  • Tom says:

Ha! “Powder my nose and walk down the block”!?! I’ll have you know I have to get in the car and drive THREE WHOLE MILES in the driving sunshine on a street filled with kamikaze METRO buses, tourist vans, and Kardashians. On days like today when it’s in the 60°s I even need to turn on the heated seats! There should be a telethon! ?

  • Musette says:

    WELP!!
First things first: sooo proud of you for making that trip down the mountain! It’s … different, swooping down and around…

and… everything you described there sounds amazing! This is my first real foray into gourmands and I’m finding I quite like them, as long as they’re not overly sweet or cloying. All of these sound really good, but especially the turmeric one. I see a train trip in my future..

    Heya March,
The two LUSH stores near me are in underground sections of malls. Even walking past gives my head the heeebeees. I’m so intrigued by Sticky date that I’m going to brave the shops next week. especially now BOTH you and tom have given it the thumbs up.
