Happy, and welcome to the, new year. 2025.
It’s been raining – and uncharacteristically cold. However, we had a couple of days of brilliant sunshine and early frost which looked so completely otherworldly and gorgeous.
I started this post on New Year’s Eve while wearing Shalimar parfum… New Year’s Day was gale force winds which shifted to heavy rain. Serge Lutens Tubereuse Criminelle was a good way to thumb my nose at the weather.
On New Year’s Day eve, I made flat breads to go with the remaining Indian food. Surprisingly easy. Will become part of the repertoire.
(Looking right to left above shows me getting better)
A something new to me and a couple of look backs to 2024.
First off, there’s what I think is an interesting perfume concept here that I’ve been watching, called Ffern (yes, two F’s, https://ffern.co/). It gets verrrry mixed commentary. But, I was curious and finally bit the bullet – a bit of ‘I’m doing this so you don’t have to’ – and added myself to the waitlist (it appears to be popular) with no expectations of hearing anything before late this year or early 2026.
But, low and behold, a few days ago I got a text saying there’s an opening on the list, are you interested? Of course, I did the deed.
Ffern is basically, per them: “A new model for perfumery. Natural, limited-edition, blended in the English countryside”. The structure is: 1) Join the waiting list; 2) They’ll text you if a space on the ledger becomes available; 3) You choose (or not) to take up the space and they send you the latest perfume; and 4) Thereafter, they blend you a bottle for each season (this is seasonal – ie, 4x a year) delivered on the solstice/equinox. Clearly, that idea is right up my alley.
Each parcel comes with a bottle – but it also comes with a sample so you can try the fragrance before committing to it. Very intelligently done. Yes, you pay for the bottle but if it’s a no go and you return it you are refunded your payment. At £89 for a 32ml (weird number) bottle, this isn’t cheap. The fragrances are created by François Robert and a protégée. Robert is a fifth generation master perfumer (if his name sounds familiar, maybe you’re thinking of Guy Robert, the nose for some Amouage, Hermes, Dior and Rochas perfumes, among others).
The perfume I’m starting with is Winter and I’ll report on it as soon as I get it – and so on through the year.
Next up is a book series I discovered and read all 20 available (note to William Kent Krueger: please please release another Cork O’Connor in 2025). The series is set in the north woods of Minnesota. It is incredibly atmospheric and weaves through the lives of Sheriff/ex-Sheriff Corcoran O’Connor and his extended family, which is a mix of white and Ojibwe first nations members. The stories are great – and the author doesn’t shy away from difficulty and tragedy. But there’s also enormous joy and optimism running through the stories. And the writing is great. Oh, and they are basically mysteries. Sort of.
Also, I noticed that the cookery writer Nigel Slater, who I’ve mentioned before (I really love his food-related diaries), had published a new book: A Thousand Feasts. As he describes it, “small moments of joy … a memoir of sorts”. It’s sort of fairly short (several paragraphs mostly) memory tableaux of experiences he’s had over the years – of travel, food, etc. It’s beautifully presented – snippets of mundane and not so mundane things rendered with emotion and beauty and humour. Examples: an experience of buying bread in Iran; an early morning sweet (“a crème caramel topped with a ball of ice cream”) along with a thimble of coffee in Osaka; dealing with potential ghosts during the renovation of his London house; eating breakfast in a Seoul hotel — all sorts of sashimi, miso soup, pickled radishes – while sitting next to an American businessman eating multi-coloured Cheerios.
So, that’s sort of me beginning this year. I hope it’s starting well for you with perhaps some good intensions and a positive outlook.
NB: a tidbit of joy. A group of wild rabbits is called a ‘fluffle’.

Ffern sounds really interesting, I’m looking forward to your report back! The entire middle swath of the US is getting hammered with a snowstorm right now and somehow it missed us, although (again) we could really use some precipitation. I’ve been feeding our murder of crows 😀
Saw the maps of a cylinder moving across the US. Looks quite ominous. I would, as ever, send you some of our rain if I could.
Ffern does not seem to be that interesting, but the presentation is nice.
But maybe i will buy the cookbook, because he is one of my faves, the other is Diana Henry…
The Slater isn’t a cookbook — just snippet memories. The diaries have recipes. I really love those and reread on a regular basis. Ah, Ffern. The presentation is lovely …
Happy New Year, Cinnamon! Great post. We’re having a major snow storm today. Already several inches on the ground and more to come. The government and schools are closed. I’m puttering around doing chores. Contemplating taking down Christmas since today is Epiphany, aka Three Kings Day. Merry Christmas Orthodox Christians who celebrate today!
Your bread looks awesome — kudos for a great bake.
That book series by Kent sounds good. I’m always looking for new authors to read. Read 70 books last year.
The fFern project sounds really intriguing. I’m eager to hear your report. Especially regarding the sillage and projection of the scents. I have found natural products to be “wimpy” with regards to those qualities in the past.
I hope the snow is gentle. The tree here comes down tomorrow. I enjoy the deconstruction as much as the initial decorating.
Huh. Well this Ffern sounds…not me.
But I will forever love you for the Nigel Slater exerpt (I love him) – the idea of eating multicolored Cheerios for breakfast, whilst surrounded by all the beautiful options… (AND you’re not 6 yrs old – if you’re 6, you get a pass. And ALL the Cheerios!)
We shall see on Ffern. I sort of wondered if the businessman was one of those rigid people who felt some sort of release being away and had this desire to buck the sane breakfast trend and go a bit loopy (so to speak).
LOL! mayyybe… but.. really? Multicolored anything for breakfast (or anytime) sounds… ugh..
but his mileage may vary
My daughter gave me Ffern starting in Autumn. It was ok, nothing special. A few days ago I tried Winter. Flat out “no”. It has peppermint and eucalyptus, neither of which I like in perfume unless it’s subtly woven into the scent. Here it overwhelms everything. I think that the perfumer(s) are not particularly talented.
Well, my bottle and all the fluff arrived today. So, I guess I’ll see.
I like the terracotta discs but none of the teas were to my taste. The cards were pretty but what are they for?
Welcome to 2025 Cinnamon,
Hope it’s a good one.
Fluffle! Good drag name.
Fflem, sorry Ffern.
Portia xx
Ffern Fluffle. Welcome you too!
Interesting you joining Ffern. I joined for a year. Whilst I never returned anything I felt a year was enough. You will enjoy opening the packaging but please be careful with the samples. Two of mine leaked.
We now have deepish snow & will be travelling to DH oncology appt the his 4WD. A blessing but it’s way too big for me to drive.
Yup. The more I think about it, the more it looks like a one year project and then I’ll let someone else faff with it. Best wishes regarding the appointment. Hope the weather there passes fairly soon.
Now very slushy & I’ve been out poop hunting. Gak!
I’m slogging through cleaning and reorganizing things. Why is it so much easier to create a mess than to clean one?
I need to wash the kitchen floor — a thankless task, as the dog will just track in paw prints as soon as I’m done. I don’t like minimalism but I do ‘get’ having less around to gather dust helps on the cleaning front. Not that I’m terribly good on not having ‘items’. Last night I went to move things on top of a cabinet and found a huge amount of dust. Duh! Haven’t looked up there in ages. At least it’s half clean now … Problem is I have to move the couch to get to the other half.
Shalimar and Tubereuse Criminelle are a bold start to the new year. Congrats on making flatbreads—I love trying new things and successfully cooking new things is a victory!
I’ll be curious to hear about Ffern, and your experience. I’m in the eye rolling group, but it may be amazing.
My SOTD is a sample, Almond Tart from Theodoros Kalotinis. Up top is BUTTER, and dry down is sweet musky almond. I didn’t love the top, but the endpoint is pleasant. Be well.
Both the Shalimar and TC fit the days well. I’ve tried flatbreads before and made a hash of it. I think having a big, decent pan helped this time round. Well, Ffern. I am keeping an open mind. I am trying to empty samples (not decants) for Portia’s new project and plan to finish one today. So, no word on what that is except that the house reformulated it and it’s not as good, but it is a conundrum, which makes it more interesting to wear.
Thanks for the book recommendations! I myself would very much like to see an exaltation of larks, as well as enough wild rabbits together to constitute a fluffle.
I love your screen name. I don’t know if we get larks here. I’ll have to have a look. We do have swallows and one of the names for a grouping is a ‘richness’.
