No, I’m not referencing the George Harrison song.
Rather, more like ‘something odd’, ‘something strange’, ‘something confusing’, something out of sorts’, ‘something … dissonant’ — yup, that last one is the right one.
Last week’s weather made life very confusing. I know I talk about this too much, but seriously: it rains torrentially, it stops and the sun comes out, it thunders – and let’s do it all again. All over the map.
It is astonishingly humid. People here talk about it being ‘close’.
It gets really hard to figure out what perfume to put on.
In the mornings, you can smell the silage (ie, muck-spreading on the fields). That’s a spring/autumn thing here and mostly you get used to it (some people don’t – they usually don’t stay long here or farther west — during Covid, we had city people move here and to the county west of us, and get in trouble with the farmers when they complained about seasonal smells – a lot sold up and moved back up country after a year or so).
Some mornings when it’s very wet you get sewage smell as the evil (truly evil) local water company dumps into the local estuary when its infrastructure can’t manage what’s coming through it.
You’d think something sharp and citrus would call to me.
But, the other day I was perusing bottles and pulled out Dior Eau Noire: immortelle to the max. And on and off over the past week that’s where I’ve landed: Eau Noire.
Now, I don’t usually even think about visiting that until it’s cold. It’s a late autumn/winter perfume when it’s very cold and dry out. So, I can’t for the life of me figure out what the draw was in muggy early September.
It did sit … weird … but in an entirely intriguing way in the end. Molasses, rum, wood smoke, birch tar-ish.
The more I smell this on wear days the more little surprises I get (little somethings?): nuts, a huge pile of raked leaves, candied fruit (apricots, plums).
Maybe my brain was saying ‘world, please dry out’. Which is a bit pathetic after our long, dry summer and the desire for a bit of wet.
I wrote about Eau Noire a couple of years ago. I do really adore this. I’ve not really met another perfume that behaves in the same way.
It’s not got the same heavy oomph of a leather perfume. In some ways it reminds me of Halloween, and we know that is my favourite holiday.
So, is your weather ‘normal’? Is it pleasant? Does it make you want to travel somewhere else far far away and different?

Our gorgeous false fall with low temps and low humidity has gone away. Waaaahhhh! We are back to high 70s and humidity, so I am back to wearing summer scents. Today: Cristalle eau Verte. I haven’t tried that Dior, but it does sound very fall-ish. Yay for finding something that masks the mucky outdoor smells!
I generally think of it as a late fall/winter perfume. I don’t think I’ve ever visited it this early in the past. There’s actually a lawsuit against the water company taking shape. It’s a slow process but very necessary.
Our weather has been kind of weird: hot yet with some humidity (that you all would laugh at). It’s just cooling down a little bit this coming week (down in the 80’s F) so I might actually venture out a bit more.
I’ve never tried Eau Noire but I do have a couple of bottles of Sables, even though I rarely wear it. I feel like it’s a cold weather one for me: reminds me of autumn/early winter in NYC (where and when I originally bought it). But I should try it in the heat- a lot of the SL’s that are sticky with fruits and spices I found were really great in the heat when I finally dared wear them.
I think this is our new normal in weather: ie, that it’s different vs what it was and it has no real pattern any more.
Oh, please try EN. And maybe compare it to Sables in a post (if that hasn’t been done recently — I don’t think so).
Sadly, StC doesn’t have it. I suppose I could drag my lazy butt over to Dior on Rodeo and see if they have it.
Also if you are wondering what happened to the comment from the person selling perfume I deleted it. I hate it when people do that. It’s like someone you didn’t invite to a party not only crashing but insisting on trying to interest the other guests in their MLM.
We have had two glorious days of warmth and sunshine Cinnamon. PLUS we got that spectacular red moon. I didn’t see it. Tried to stay awake but must have drifted off around 2.30am. Friends photos are bloody amazing though and I’m bummed about missing out.
Tonight under the blinding full moon was lovely with the dogs so I am in no position to complain.
LOVE EAu Noire. There are three eras of it here. All very lovely. The very green juiced one gets the wear.
Portia xx
I missed the red moon, sadly. I have seen it once in the past and found it quite extraordinary.
My EN is from some time in the early 2000s. A decant from an MUAer. It get stronger and gooier over time.
It’s sunny and cool (and of course dry) but definitely has that feeling of autumn in the air which is a bit melancholy for me. I’ve already noticed how the days are shortening. But it’s the perfect weather to try a whole range of fragrances. I alternate between trying new things and giving my favorites a spin.
It’s confused here. Doesn’t quite feel autumn but the leaves are falling and the blackberries are mostly finished (too high up for people — they are now fully for the animals). I need to delve back into the closet box. I forget what’s in there each year vs the bottles that live in a dark corner of my work area.
British weather has gone to hell in a hand cart hasn’t it? I’m with you on the evil of the water companies. We’re paying for the greed of the 80’s by all our utilities now being unfit for purpose.
Eau Noire was one of my bete noires. I really dislike such overdoses of immortelle as in this & Goutal Sables.
On days when the weather can’t make its mind up I’m often lazy & go naked or wear a simple cologne such as 4711 or Agua de Colonia Concentrada Alvarez Gomez or the same house’s Eau Fraîche. Those I can top up whenever needed or the 4711 solid stick perfume works a treat on the temples for headaches from the pre thunder air pressure & humidity.
I use 4711 for headaches as well (often weather related) — my bottle lives in the fridge and I splash it on a cold, wet cloth and have a lie-down.
My mother wore 4711 and I’ve always associated it with her. So, not really gone there. I do have a large bottle of cheap as chips cologne I found at M&S which is perfect for when the world is too hot to manage but it didn’t get a go-round this year. I think maybe because I re-discovered that bottle of SIP Magazine Street and was occupied with that.
Love a rediscovery
