Happy post Xmas etc. It was … fine. Which was really nice. Not fraught, good food (though I’ve realised that after eating the leftovers for lunch through the 28th that Xmas food is too rich for me for more than a day or two now), an afternoon walk on which we all went, an evening one for me. It was very cold but dry. Nice change. We’ll be slowly clearing the fridge – except for roast potatoes, which I’ll be making every few days. There are onion rings in the freezer. I love them but only have them twice a year-ish.
I wore Neela Vermeire Eshal on the day. Of course, as it was my main gift. After arriving very cold (I worried a bit about the juice) all was well. A bit of brightness in our cold and dark. Heretic Black Salt one day (continues to confound me with that saltwater taffy note), Perfumer H Smoke, and then Theo Fennell Scent.
I’m looking forward to Indian food on Wednesday evening. A load of Indian food to last for a good few days. Dhal and naan for breakfast, choice bits of things mixed together for lunch.
This is a listy thing. I like lists. I always have one for food shopping. Otherwise I graze and that’s not useful as I spend way too much and come home with all kinds of strange and fancy but forget the broccoli …

The Financial Times, a sort of finance/business/politics and more newspaper here (you can get it elsewhere but I think a lot more people read it here than in other places), has a ‘you’ve got a lot of money, here’s how to spend it, or these are things you might be interested in’ magazine in most weekend editions.
When I still worked in finance I had a subscription to the FT. Now, I just buy the weekend edition or a week day one if it has something I’m particularly interested in.
The fancy magazine generally has a feature of questions to someone of significance. Sometimes the person featured is a bit of a numpty; sometimes they are really interesting. The questions range the gamut from ‘how did you end up doing what you do?’ to ‘what’s your style signifier?’ to ‘what’s always in your fridge?’ to ‘what was the last gift you were given that you adore?’ It can be a lot of fun – and sometimes edifying.
Oh, and they sometimes ask which fragrance do you wear? The last one I read the woman, a chef, wore Chanel No 19.

So, anyway, this is where we’re going today: some questions – just five – that you can answer as an antidote to post holiday overload or just because it looks like fun. My answers appear at the end of the post.
- What’s your style signifier?
- What’s almost always in your fridge?
- If you could have anything right now (not world peace, etc, just something) what would it be?
- How do you relax?
- What do you think was the best gift you gave this holiday season?
Here’s me: 1) I always wear earrings – different sorts but largely posts these days – each day. Feel naked without them. And I wear three gold rings on my left hand which all have meaning for me – a scarab, a snake (well, an ouroboros) and one with small diamonds patterned on seaweed from Cornwall in the west of England. A number of years ago I was poor and sold a lot of jewellery to pay for groceries. I’ve slowly replaced stuff and these rings are top of the heap. 2) Kefir, berries, cheese. 3) A tiny bolt hole in Paris – from which it would be easier to travel through Europe. Don’t need big – just a studio. 4) Walk, walk some more / walk in the dark – talk to the dog. 5) Assisted my son in buying a new iPhone. His was very old and starting to need charging more than once a day. Boy, are iPhones pricey.

There we go. Have at it if you feel like it. If not, tell us things you’d rather focus on: something fun that happened over the hols, a surprise you enjoyed, a lovely outing, etc.
Pics: mine, pexels, wiki parfums

I didn’t really do much of anything. Dog sat once. It was raining pretty much non-stop
Fun!
Okay
1. Style signifier: black. Yoga pants: leggings/ zipper hoodies. Always worn with outre’ earrings ( crystal chandelier/ large pearls
2. Kombucha ( especially Gingerade), cream ( for coffee)
3. A new kitchen
4. I don’t. Well… I do.. but usually after a bout on the elliptical. In good weather, gardening
5. I… dunno. Probably that I made sure my friend’s husband got on his train ( sleeper to FL) – lots of quiet, behind the scenes management. Sounds silly but it was actually a bit of work!
A new kitchen … The kitchen is one of the room’s I am so satisfied with post the refurb five odd years ago. It’s more a kitchen and everyone can gather room. It’s now where I spend most of my time. Now that bathroom is done, could kitchen be next?
Yes! ( fingers crossed). But it will be a cash outlay so… in a bit
I remember you saying you were so pleased with your kitchen renovation! Glad it continues thus!!!!!
My style signifier – jeans and a t-shirt shirt. Often with a jacket and accessories to hide the fact that I’m wearing jeans and a t-shirt, but there it is.
In my frig – cream , various types of cheese, and jalapenos ( for my husband)
A small apartment in France would be lovely. It doesn’t have to be Paris, but I wouldn’t say no.
Reading and crossword puzzles.
A carved wooden dragon wall hanging for my sister. I saw it at a craft fair and it was so “her” I couldn’t resist. She loves it.
Fun questions!
Jalapenos?
That sounds like a wonderful gift. It’s great when we can do that kind of gifting for someone we love.
What’s your style signifier? Jeans & boots. Jeans are M&S, Next & ancient Levi’s.
What’s almost always in your fridge? Milk. Both semi skimmed & Jersey full fat.
If you could have anything right now (not world peace, etc, just something) what would it be? DH to respond well to this next lot of chemo.
How do you relax? NYT quick puzzles & Suduko on my phone, Aquarobics, playing with & walking Jarvis & reading.
What do you think was the best gift you gave this holiday season? Taking the family out for curry on Boxing Day. The gift of food & time all wrapped into one.
Wishing that for your DH as well!
And give Mr Jarvis a smooch for me!
Jeans. I bought my first pair in years recently from M&S and they are surprisingly good.
We’ve been in touch regarding your guy. Will be thinking positive thoughts for a good outcome.
Tomorrow is Indian food evening. It’s ludicrous how much I’m looking forward to it.
We overlap on a couple of things — walking for relaxation, and a bolthole in Paris! Think of allllll the fabulous walking we could do from our boltholes. Gift: I gave Carolyn a fancy pan from Milk Street which made us both happy. Fridge: cheese (so much!), half and half, salad fixin’s. Style signifier: hmmm. I have a lot of jewelry, so jewelry in general, but for years I’ve worn the same simple silver ring on my left hand once I removed the engagement/wedding rings. I have a lot of (frankly) nicer rings but they go on my right hand. Not a conscious decision but here we are.
Well, in a recent poll here a majority of respondents commented that to have UK citizenship one must have been born here. Well, fuck you very much. But, maybe I will be moving at some point.
Half and half. I remember, when visiting my father in Brooklyn, each morning going to the bagel shop for a toasted everything with CC and an iced coffee with half and half. Bliss.
That was a fun list. Thanks, Cinnamon.
Here are my answers to the 5 Qs:
1) Yoga leggings and a fitness 1/4 zip top, and always my small sand dollar gold necklace.
2) Almost always in the fridge: milk, greens, apples, yogurt and cheeses, dinner leftovers
3) Have anything right now: new windows and an updated bathroom!
4) Relax: Long walk, then a cup of tea and a good book
5) Best gift: family memberships to local zoo and aquarium to our sons who now have families of their own. Because I always prefer experiences to things.
That necklace sounds lovely and unusual. I remember seeing sand dollars at the beach as a kid.
What great gifts, the zoo and aquarium.
Heya Cinnamon,
Sounds like your Xmas was very good, ours was too. Quiet but full of friends, food and daily adventures. Only finished the Roast Pork last night, MMMMMM.
What’s your style signifier? I’ve given up style for comfort. Having said that my toenails are almost always painted in lurid colours or glitter and I wear thongs/flip flops nearly all year to show them off.
What’s almost always in your fridge? Milk, Sliced Ham, Brie, Sweet Mustard Pickles and Beetroot (from a can, in a Tupperware beetroot keeper. One of the universe’s best inventions.)
If you could have anything right now (not world peace, etc, just something) what would it be? We have long talked of a flat in Bratislava, Milan, Paris or Vienna. Wish I’d done it back in the 1990s when it was feasible. What I really want though is that this lovely comfortable life we have continues.
How do you relax? Most of my life is pretty relaxed. Reading, hanging on the couch with Jin and the dogs watching TV and eating a meal, art gallery tours.
I also have this dumb thing that I do (when there’s time or I need to still my mind) that takes me to a very zen place: ironing the tea towels. They all have a story so my memory of good things is engaged. Getting them super square and neat takes just enough attention that I can’t spiral or obsess over other things. The repetitive action is soothing. Having a pile of perfect tea towels is extremely satisfying.
What do you think was the best gift you gave this holiday season? One of my besties, Anna Maria, got Neela Vermeire Creations Eshal. She was ecstatic.
Jin got beautiful a set each of new sheets and duvet cover. I’d bought them on 50% discount through the year and they were still pricey but they went on his bed yesterday and he is extremely satisfied.
LOVE doing Q&As. Thanks for the fun.
Portia xx
I love your tea towel story. You get out of your head for a while AND you have Accomplished Something.
I love ironing, too! I put on ‘Pride and Prejudice ( 1940 with Olivier & Garson) or ‘Under Siege’ ( Tommy Lee Jones) and vi-ola! Nerves are calm AND everything is ironed!
LOVE this Musette, and YOU obvs.
Yeah, it’s the littlest something but SO SATISFYING every time I pull out a perfectly ironed tea towel.
Oh, brightly painted toes on display. I don’t think I wore sandals at all last summer even though it was hot here. Not sure what that was about.
What a wonderful gift, a bottle of Eshal. And sheets… Linen changing day is always a pleasure and a duvet to snuggle under. Sigh…
I spent Christmas with two of my sons and my daughter-in-law and my granddaughter and grandson. Two dogs were included as well. I did wear perfume but wore it sparingly as my oldest son hates perfume and calls my little place “perfume central”. We had a wonderful brunch and I was given some leftovers for the next day. All in all in was a Christmas despite what has been going on in the country I live in. Unfortunately for me, my wallet was stolen righten in from of my face and the party who stole it tried to buy lots of expensive things with my credit card, which happened to be in my wallet as well as my drivers license and health information. So it has been a hassle for me to take care of all these things and try to get things back to normal, but I am doing so slowly but surely. I wish you all a happy and healthy 2026.
O M G! So sorry to read about your wallet. It’s so awful having to get it all together again Filomena. Good luck, hope it goes smoothly.
HA! Perfume Central! I bet it is.
Portia xx
That’s awful on the wallet — and what a pain in the ass. I hope things right themselves quickly.
Dogs always make things cosier. I hope the little ones get on with them.
Fun poll, Cinnamon! And yay! for the chef who wears No 19! My favorite!
1. My style signifier: my silver-white hair. Sterling silver jewelry.
2. Cranberry juice, green olives, raspberry jam
3. redecorating in my house – fresh paint and new flooring
4. reading mysteries and playing puzzle games on my phone
5. bought one of my sons the DS & Durga Concrete After Lightning candle because he wanted a candle that smelled like petrichor. He was thrilled with it!
OOH! I love a phone game too DinaC. What are your faves right now?
Portia xx
A solitaire game, mahjong matching game, Word Trip, and Merge Cooking theme restaurant game at the moment. All are very easy.
Our HAIR! Of course; why didn’t I think of that! I get way more compliments on my silver hair than I did when coloring it.
Same here! 🙂
Your hair is GORGEOUS!
Ah, olives.
Petrichor … will have to have a look at that candle. On a whim, I bought the Astier de Vilatte Balthus candle which smells of an artist’s studio. It’s outstanding, as it should be for the price.
