Hi from the Outer Banks!

July 27, 2006

outter banks

I’m not really writing this on vacation, I’m writing this before I leave.  Did I fool you?

This is one of those vacations with a bunch of other friends. We rented a huge mansion-type house with six or seven bedrooms, a swimming pool, game room, and 100 yards from the ocean.  Since we did this the first time a few years back, it has become our summer vacation staple.  Nothing is better than spending seven days with sun/water/friends/booze, not necessarily in that order.  I highly recommend it.

While I was packing for vacation and picking out my scents to take with, I wondered, if I were granted two perfumes in the whole world that I could protect forever and make sure it was always available, never subject to discontinuation, which two would it be?  What I decided is it wouldn’t necessarily be my two favorite perfumes, but two that I thought should always be in this world to sniff.

Do I have an answer yet? No, I don’t, but I’m going to contemplate that on the beach with a rum punch in my hand and a good book, and I’ll have an answer when I come back. Which two perfumes do you think should always be in this world and never discontinued?

Have a great vacation! A week on the beach sounds fabulous, especially with friends and booze involved:)

Gosh, tough question. They’re not my two favorites (although they’re very high on the list), but I would probably grant immunity to Apres l’Ondee and Bois des Iles because they both strike me as incredibly beautiful in a timeless way.

Tough choice. I`ve got to go with Serge Lutens Un Lys and L’Artisan Fleur d’Oranger but those two are for this summer. I bet my picks will change in the fall.

Only one comes to mind: Arpège. It would be a loss to the world if it disappeared: there would be less light and beauty in it.

Just two? Yikes! I feel a compulsion to add at least one zero, maybe more after that two. I can bravely protect many beloved scents. But I’ll try to limit myself here…warned by the watchful eye of the gentleman w/ the finger up his nose. Mitsouko, Dorissima Goldmund, Iris Silver Mist, Bois et Fruits, Chergui (can we just consider all of the SLs to be one, since it is just one line w/ all except for Clair de Musc being worthy of saving?), Tabac Blond, Chant d’Aromes, Chamade, POTL, Yosh (again, all except for that wierd scent for the wedding boutique), En Avion, Diorling, Dioressence, Miss Dior, Diorama, Montale Black Oud…OK. I’ll choke back the next 50 I need to save since Mr. Finger is really giving me the eye now. :-) Hope you’re having a great vacation!

Oh my word! This is worse than pulling teeth with no anesthesia. OK, first thing that comes to mind - Fumerie Turque and Musc Ravageur. But, speaking of discontinued scents, today I’m wearing Parfum d’Hermes that was slightly reformulated into Rouge, and I’m mourning this reformulation! It’s so gorgeous! Why do they keep messing with perfection? *shakes fist at perfume gods*

I cannot really do this, so I will just pick the first two that come to mind: Mitsouko and Chanel Cuir de Russie (after all, Elle is bringing plenty for us all to share:) I don’t think I could buy perfume from someone with a finger up his nose (even if the point of the ad is to take it out)—–unless, of course, I really wanted it.:)

PS Just read the whole ad–is that Frank Zappa?

  8. Robin on 27.07.2006 at 09:58 (Reply)

    I can’t do it: I can’t pick just 2!!

But hope you have a GREAT vacation, and drink a rum punch for me!

Limiting myself to just 2 that I would save for the greater good of mankind - I am going for things that I love, that I think are easy to love for most people - just really beautiful with no challenging or weird notes - that would be Chergui and Vetiver Tonka.

hmmmm possibly OJ’s Frangipani and Passage d’Enfer by L’Artisan. And perhaps Chinatown in the fall. Life just wouldn’t be as beautiful.

Just two, Patty? Hmmm…Mitsouko and Cristalle? I don’t know, but those two sound like keepers to me.

    Hugs!

Echoing Apres l’Ondee and Passage d’Enfer, from this nascent perfumista’s perspective. Both are multi-layered and captivating, in their own right.

Here’s to light beach reads, rum punch, perfume pondering and the Outer Banks!

Patty, enjoy the last few days of vacation!! Hope you’re having a blast and getting some rest at the same time.

Girl, only 2? Well, I have to agree completely with MimiFroufrou. Arpege is too good to let go and would be one choice, and Vol de Nuit would have to be the other. (It beat out Apres L’Ondee by a molecule.)

Scandal de Lanvin, Santal Mysore, and Mitsouko [oops, that’s three!].

I’m afraid I side with Elle- I want Crepe de Chine, Vent Vert original,L’Heure Bleue, Sortilege….

    I’ll never be satisfied…sigh….

  15. Flora on 28.07.2006 at 01:49 (Reply)

Now this is quite an impossible task! However, I think I must stick to the classics on this: Joy and Fracas. I am all about the white flowers! (However, if I were to pick two more modern ones, I would choose SL UN Lys and FM En Passant.)

    Have fun on the beach!\:d/

Mitsouko and Apres l’Ondee. Okay, now I have to go cry at the idea of picking two.:((

Hey, Flora — I’m doing some candy on Monday, have you smelled Divine by Divine? (Okay, not a compelling name, I admit.) It is … so beautiful, and All About the White Flowers. I am still recovering.

Only 2??? Impossible! I remember buying Sortilege (Le Galion)right before it was discontinued (in the late 70’s; I’m almost 50). Anything by Dior is too good to waste -I’d like to try the aforementioned Diorling & Diorama (oops, that’s three again). :)
