New Penhaligon scents

First!  The seven winners of the Divine samples:  Goose, 2scents, bellablue, chasa, Fiordiligi, ScentRed and smy.  Just click on Contact Us over on the left and send me your address and remind me what I’m sending you. Thanks to everyone for playing and also for the great Costa Rica ideas.  BTW, my birthday isn’t until December, but I’m just planning early and also yearning to run way to Mexico for a week of yoga and healthy food, but I think I need to do that like – Right. Now!  Srsly, a week of yoga, eating right, no phones, knocking around old Mayan ruins, sleeping almost on the ocean in a luxury thatched roof hut, reading, did I say sleeping?  Yes, I’m definitely going to run away from home soon.

Penahligon released four new fragrances in July, their anthology series, based on perfumes they used to make.

Night Scented Stock has notes of clove, heliotrope, violet, vanilla, musk and tonka bean, and this is one smooth scent.  All the notes listed are all right up front, clove and heliotrope taking a front seat on a backdrop of musk and tonka bean.  I love this scent, it’s blended beautifully, rich and spicy.

Extract of Limes is just what it says it is – all limes, with some lemon and neroli.  If you are looking for a great, tart citrus, this is the one. I could bathe in this during summer, it’s really refreshing and zesty that actually lasts.

Gardenia has notes of tuberose, jasmine, gardenia, ylang-ylang, spice and vanilla. It’s a nicely done gardenia, but I’m just not doing backflips over it as something really new or different from other gardenia scents, many that I like a lot more. But it’s a good gardenia with some spicy notes, it feels very southern.

Eau de Verveine, the description says “grassy aromatic, with citrus and woods. The scent of an Indian Summer, shimmering heat haze, soft metallics, crumbled herbs, spices, musk and vanilla.”  This is crisp perfection. Every person that I’ve been around when they smelled it really loved it.  It’s a great grassy green scent, but has a nice, rich, rounded drydown.

Another scent that I never see get any attention, and I don’t know what the EDT is like, but Louise and I split a bottle of Miller Harris Citron Citron parfum when we were in London. My reason – it’s the first citrus scent that didn’t fade on me after like 2 minutes. Though I now have to add Extract of Limes from above to that list, that sucker stays put too.

Penhaligon’s old Eau de Verveine was the very first fragrance I ever owned. And it was lovely.

Reading your post, however, I get the feeling that these anthology scents are more “inspired by” old Penhaligon’s fragrances than they are recreations of them. And the descriptions I’ve read, here and elsewhere, of the new Eau de Verveine make it sound a lot more woody-ambery than the original frag that bore that name.

  • Lee says:

I wanna come on the retreat. Though I might get the giggles for some of the time…

  • pyramus says:

Well, damn, Tammy. Here I was, hoping that Night Scented Stock smelled like the flower, which I used to grow and which is simply one of the most beautiful naturally-occurring scents on the face of the planet, and now you’ve gone and dashed my dreams.

Just as well, I suppose. The last thing I need is another bottle of anything. But if there is such a thing as an accurate night scented stock perfume, I would like to know about it. Anyone?

    • tammy says:

Pyramus, I have decidedly odd skin chemistry….I’d be happy to send you my sample, and see if it’s better on your skin.

Please feel free to email me if you’re interested: joliefleursatgmaildotcom.

Nothing compares to the fragrance of that simple little flower, does it?!

      • tammy says:

Oh my, I guess I meant “to” see if it’s good on your skin, not “and” see…I reckon you’d be the best judge of that! 😉

  • CynthiaW says:

I can’t wait to try Extract of Limes – I haven’t been able to find a citrus that didn’t fade immediately or, conversely, last forever but smell like lemon bug spray or Pledge.

How does the Gardenia compare to EL’s Tuberose Gardenia? I love gardenia scents, but I already have the TG and Marc Jacobs, so I don’t know that I need another one – unless it’s better and cheaper than TG.

I got a sample of the Night Scented Stock from TPC yesterday!

It is very nice, but I was disappointed that it isn’t anything close to the flower, which is one of my all-time favorites.

However, I’m sure once I get over that, I’ll be able to enjoy it on its own merit.

When I think of Mexico in August, I think of suffocating humidity, but if you want to go, GO!!! Life is short.

And completely off topic, also in my Package o’ Delight from TPC was the Kilian Pure Oud.

    OH. MY. GOD.

I got the sample fully expecting not to like it,(ouds just smell like incense on me, as a rule) but wanting to at least be able to have tried it, given all the rave reviews….

    OH. MY. GOD.

That yoga retreat in Mexico sounds amazing!!! Wish I could join you, for yoga, healthy food, and real sleep (Musette is right Sleep is the the new sex!!!). Do you go on those retreats alone or with friends. I have always wanted to go, but no one want to go with me and I am not sure it would be fun alone.

BTW Extract of Limes sounds great on a 92 degree day like today..

  • Musette says:

    Patty –

You do know that Sleep is the New Sex, don’t you? You heard it here first!

When I saw the title of this post I thought ‘oh, meh…Penhaligon’s’ – shows you what I know….! All of these, save Gardenia, sound KILLLAH!

    Can’t wait to try them.

I’m stunned that you like the MH Citron Citron, only because I would think it’s too linear for your taste, which is way more developed than mine. I love that fragrance and use the body oil and perfume a lot during the summer heat, of which we have had little…but I digress….

anyway, can’t wait to try the Ps!

Go yoga, baby. A friend just took off for a weeklong yoga retreat. Sounds relaxing – well, that and the Sleeeeep.

    xoxoxo >-)

  • Louise says:

Oh, Patty, you had me at Stock. Sounds “me”-ish. Must hunt down.

I agree-no need to wait for a sleeping/yoga/sleeping break. Need some company for those down-dogs? I’d love to “support” you 😉

Oooh, I love the Citron x 2 body products-that parfum is gonna rock!

  • mals86 says:

I’m longing to try the Stock as well.

  • bryan says:

did you you get yours in London while there? I have been waiting for the Stock to come back out and it seems they’re not in the states yet. I guess I’ll be hitting up the Court for some.

And of course the gardenia, for the tuberose listed.
