Last fall we did Swapmania – our first perfume swap free-for-all on the Posse. I’d wrung my hands for weeks prior, came up with eleventy-jillion rules, and figured maybe nine people would show up and play. By the end of that weekend we had more than 1,200 comments, and for awhile people were having trouble getting on the site due to traffic. So: I think we can call it a success.
Today, I, March the Maleficent, decree the start of our Summer Swapmania, and this post will stay up and will run through the weekend. I’m guessing fewer people will play this time (vacation etc.) but who knows? I’m going to do an abbreviated set of instructions below. If you are new to this and have no idea what I am talking about, and/or you want to see the “full” list of instructions from last time and how it actually worked in comments, click here for a link to the last Swapmania.
For further edification, I did a follow up post asking how it went, and if you’d like to read THOSE 215 comments (what people got, etc.) that link is here.
Today you are invited to list, in comments, your swap bottles of perfume, partial bottles, minis, decants and samples. I think it’s easier to list items in separate comments if you’re offering more than one item (sample sets are one item), otherwise the threads can get confusing, Edited Weds. morning: go ahead and list all your swaps in one comment unless you’re doing more than, say, five. Ish.
Please include:
- a brief description of each item you’re offering – such as oz/ml size, concentration (EdT, EdP), and any other info you think might be of interest (vintage/partial/used/boxed…)
- the country you live in (so people can take that into consideration for customs and shipping expense)
- whether you are open to receiving NON-PERFUME ITEMS in exchange, or whether you really would prefer only other perfume items. FWIW – last time people ended up swapping for all sorts of amazing things, including hand-knit scarves and hats, chocolate, tea, etc.
- You can also say if you are looking for a particular bottle of something(s) to swap for –hope springs eternal!
- WEDS. AM UPDATE – hey, go ahead and list your contact info up front if you want to, that seems to be working. Don’t just type your normal email address in there, though (see #2 below.)
Clear as mud? Here’s a sample of what a swap listing might look like: “Hermes Jardin Sur le Nil, 1.6 oz. EDT, half full, boxed. I live in the US and am open to swaps abroad. Willing to swap for perfume or other items. email me — jane doe at gmail dot com”
What can people offer to swap in exchange for your perfumes? Other bottles/partials/minis/samples etc., or things. When offering for a swap item, please say what country you’re from so they can take that into consideration.
This will work best if everyone keeps an open mind – let us practice and presume honesty, good intentions, and respect.
Someone posted the helpful detail that you can search comments on a PC by hitting CTRL + F (think “find”.) This makes it easier if you’re looking through massive comments for a particular fragrance and/or your swap offers. If you’re on a Mac, try (if you are in a browser like Chrome) hitting Edit, Find to search.
The fine print:
1) Caveat Swapper. This is not eBay, and I am not your higher power or your mother. I will not be mediating disputes. If anything went horribly wrong in the last Swapmania, I never heard about it. I think most everyone had a blast. But if something goes wrong with your swap, that’s between you and the other swapper. Perfume Posse and I are not responsible or liable.
2) You and your swapper are responsible for figuring out a way to get in touch with each other to exchange details (mailing address etc.) Many of you already have gravatar IDs that link to your websites, etc. You can use MakeupAlley (MUA,) FaceBook, LiveJournal, email, whatever. PLEASE DO NOT type your email addresses into comments; they are collected by spambots. If you must do so, spell it out: chris dot smith at hotmail dot com When you have completed a swap, please go back and mark your item as taken.
3) Please remember to behave yourselves; often, two or more people are making offers for the same bottle of Cuir de Russie, and only one person is going to get it (unless the owner wants to split.) Last time there was some fairly intense competition on certain bottles, and that’s the way it works. Let’s treat our fellow swappers with kindness and respect. Once you’ve agreed to a swap and exchanged mailing info, etc., please don’t back out if you suddenly see something pop up that you’d rather have. The karma fairies will turn all your Guerlain into vinegar.
4) Send your swap in a timely fashion. It seems self-evident, but this was a minor issue last time. Once you’ve agreed to do this, send your side of the swap. If you’re not going to be able to do so until August, you need to tell your co-swapper ahead of time.
5) MUA peeps – you can’t just say “go see my MUA list and see if there’s anything you’d swap for.” Lots of folks on here aren’t on MUA. Also I’m not thrilled with people pasting in their entire, lengthy MUA wish/swap lists … because that’s what MUA is for, right? But I won’t flame you for it.
Okay, kids! This was a huge blast last time, and people got some amaaaazing things, including extras in their packages. So go have fun!

Amouage Ayoon al maha attar, 6 ml (concentrated perfume oil), opened, tested once, with box, received as a gift from Amouge directly. (since not much info is available, the attar is based on Rose, Sandalwood and oud….power ten! If you have any questions, please ask me!)

Carven – Ma Griffe (vint. purchased used, 2009)
About 1/3 (i.e., ~2.5 ml) remaining of a .25oz spray. Don’t know the concentration because there’s no indication. Based on the bottle and sprayer style I would date this as ~1970s.
Calypso Christianne Celle – Chevrefeuille edt (purchased 2009)
100ml bottle, 80ml remaining. It’s a long-lasting, summery scent with bergamot, honeysuckle & OB on a light amber and musk base (notes borrowed from NST). I think of it as a white-collared shirt scent.
DHS – Gypsy perfume Oil Roll-on from her Essence Studio collection. She listed it as 1 dram but I believe it’s closer to 4-5ml. Never used. I believe the notes include a dark rose and tobacco/leather.

Vintage Shalimar perfume bottle, anyone? It didn’t occur to me initially to list this, but while rooting through my perfume cupboard, I found a lovely old (empty) Guerlain Shalimar bottle, about 4 inches tall. You know, the one with the pretty blue fan stopper. It has the Guerlain Paris gold print on the stopper, partial tassel and metal tag, but has lost its paper label, and has a chip in the bottom. Not Baccarat marked, as far as I can see. Nevertheless, its got a faint sticky residue of perfume on the bottom and around the stopper, with tiny drops adhering to the inside of the bottle, and smells ghostly and gorgeous when unstoppered.
I should have mentioned above, this is a “smallish” swap; I’d love to see this go to a vintage Shalimar lover in exchange for a little decant of something nice, or a few high end samples, that sort of thing.

Peaty scotch, leather and cigar smoke develop into a musky-vanilla skin-scent. A natural perfume. Used sparingly 2x’s.
Mini (4ml) pour bottle of Chanel 19. Aprox 1/2 ml of it has been used.
Travel size rollerball (.28 fl oz) Pacifica Mediterranean Fig aprox 1/5 of the bottle is used. “Earth meets ocean in this green, full-bodied blend with Sweet Fig, Palm, Cyclamen, Moss and Clove, all set in a luscious Sandalwood base. Sensuous and complex, it’s a wonderfully imaginative take on classic fig.”
I have an uncapped bottle of Cereus pour femme. I don’t know if it’s No. 3, 9 or 12. It’s really just a gimme for anyone who wants it as I don’t know which one it is, (From the notes I’m smelling I think it’s Cereus Pour Femme No. 9 ~ “Flirtatious notes of luscious black currant and juicy raspberry are commingled with zesty bergamot to create this bright sparkling topnote, while the heart of the fragrance is built on the richness of Bulgarian Rose. The warm and sensual background possesses creamy Vanilla whipped with Musks, Sandalwood and Cedarwood to create an enticingly sophisticated fragrance.” Additional notes include crushed leaves, star jasmine and peony.)
It’s a full sized bottle but there is nothing on the bottle denoting how many fl oz. About 1/4 has been used.
Also a full bottle of DK Gold eau de parfum. I think I sprayed it 1-2 x’s. (Family and friends know I like perfume and I end up being gifted a lot of stuff whether I like it or not. I bought it a year ago at one of those ubiquitous Guerlain boutiques in Paris, so it’s not old and I’m almost completely positive it’s not an EdT because I specifically asked for a higher concentration. The bottle is meant to be put inside one of those fancy gold exteriors Guerlain sells, if that helps.

Christian Dior Diorella, 50 ml EdT, in older packaging (powder-blue box). Manufactured in 2003, according to the production code on the bottle. Purchased brand new at a hole-in-the-wall perfume shop in April of this year, worn maybe four times total. Not my thing, but a classic, and getting harder to find.
Prada EdP (2004), 50 ml, about 97% full.
YSL Kouros, 50 ml, half full.
I’m willing to swap for just about anything so long as it’s on the darker, woodier, smokier, sultrier end of the spectrum. No freshies, no aquatic, not big on white musk, vanilla, or floral. Loving greens, vetiver, moss, and woods lately, and I’m always up for a good spicy oriental. (Honestly, though, try me on anything. That is so funny! I have a 15 ml manufacturer’s sample of the Vintage Betsy Johnson that I was just going to add to my post. I’ve never seen anyone else who has it on all the lists I’ve surveyed. For all you perfumaniacs out there. it’s a nice, youthful fruity floral with a musky base that’s a recreation of the perfume she used to sell at her NY boutique in the 1980s. it has the same funky, antic vibe of her clothes of the period. I like it, but I just have too much perfume, you know?

I am so excited. I have the No5 parfum for your mom, which is a paltry gift, not a swap. I’m a little panicked about how to send it (those crystal stoppers always sound good in theory). I’mo wax it, then elec. tape it, then pack the inside of the Chanel box with cotton – that should keep it still.
I hope she likes it. It’s beeyoootiful – the top notes are still pretty much intact (it’s older-not-quite-vintage) and the drydown is exquisite!

yep, usps , first class w/delivery confirmation….if you have a paypal account you can make a shipping label using the multiple shipment tool (very easy) print it on regular paper and tape onto a bubble mailer. Then you can just drop it off at the PO without a trip to the counter. (Packages up to 3 oz cost the same)

If you ship a lot of stuff ( I ship splits and jewelry all the time) a nice digital postal scale is a lifesaver! I got mine at Office Supply years ago for about $50….it’s battery operated and I have not yet needed to change the battery! I think there’s cheaper ones too, but at the time I needed one right away–so there was no shopping around.

Yes, you can use the multi-order shipping tool for anything! For example: when people kindly send you $$ as a gift….so in appreciation you send them a split of fabulous perfume. *wink wink*
when you go to your paypal account overview—on the right, under “my account tools” you will see Multi-order shipping –click on that, then you want to “creat new orders” –which opens a box where you need to fill in the type of service ie. 1st class parcel or priority etc., the weight (if you don’t have a scale then give a good guess–unless you use brutishly heavy atomizers, 2/ 10ml decants will be 3oz or under so just use 3oz…) then fill in the recipient’s name and address and click save & close….if you are making a couple labels right that minute, choose: make another) then it’ll let you pay & print….it’ll assign a DC # and print out your shipping label. If you run out of ink or something like that in the middle of printing (I’ve lost power before!) it will give you another chance so don’t panic. Did that answer your question?

How much bubble wrap for a FB? I’m feeling paranoid. Will the post office cops come and get me if an entire bottle of something skanky breaks in the mailroom?
wendyb, it’s probably best to put it in a Ziploc bag first, making sure it’s truly well sealed, then put it in the outer bubble wrap etc. I also use waterproof mailers for smaller packages ,and sometimes if I am mailing several larger items I wrap everying thing in bubble wrap or whatever, then put them all in a large plastic bag & seal it. That waythe smell does not escape either. :-)
yep, what Flora said. A ziploc bag is a beautiful thing!
If the FB has a box, then make sure the bottle can’t flop around a lot inside the box–use some styrofoam peanuts, bits of bubble wrap, wadded up papertowels..what ever you have, and stuff it around the bottle a little bit. then wrap the box in a couple layers of bubble wrap .
If there’s no box….then I’d wrap it in several layers… I usually wrap in 1/2″ bubble…secure with tape–then bag it. Then wrap in 1″ bubble and secure with tape. If there’s too much obvious “sloshing” –a pack of tic-tacs makes a good amount of noise. ;)

I actually have a question. Is it normal to have random bottles and vials of perfume to fall out of your cupboards, desks, closets, nightstands, etc…? I think it’s probably because of the swap that I’m even paying any attention to it but despite having a closet full of fragrances that I wear I’ve noticed the last two days that there’s nary a storage area in my home where I don’t find perfume in some shape or form. I might even be a little ashamed of myself if I didn’t like most of what I found so much.
To add to the swap, if anyone is interested:
1 bottle of L’Occitane Miel&Citron Shimmering eau de toilette. 100ml and aprox 1/5 or less of the bottle has been used. In original box
Crabtree and Evelyn Savannah Gardens eau de toilette 60ml, nearly full. No box.
Not fancy but both are discontinued and both are perfumes I have loved.
Also, if anyone just wants the DK Gold or the unknown Cereus bottles I have listed earlier in the list you’re welcome to them…not swap necessary. Just email me an addy.

Also have some Micallef samples; not Note Vanille, but Vanille Aoud and Homme Aoud. These are small, tested samps from LuckyScent. Can decant a sample of M.
