Open Perfume Thread

So I hunted around in my samples the last few days, trying to find something to write about, and I came up empty of inspiration. Huh.  Anyone tried the newish Serge? I don’t have some of that to try, but it sounds kind of interesting.  So Serge really did stop making a new bell jar/nonexport release every year? I didn’t really believe it when I heard that, but I haven’t seen anything new for a while in that line.

What am I missing in new releases?  Is there just not anything coming out right now?  Is there an actual slowdown in new perfume releases?

I’ve got a nice sample of Hiram Green Slowdive to give away today to a lucky commenter (provided by Hiram Green).

I just read about a new Hermessence collection to be released in February 2018 created by Christine Angel, the new in house perfumer for Hermes. Myrrhe Eglantine, Agar Ebene, and Cedre Sambac are eau de toillette. In addition, the collection will feature two perfume essences, Cardamusc and Musc Pallida. Hermes is not my favorite perfume house; however, these are supposed to be created in the oriental style, so they will be on my radar to sample.

Oh would I love to win this! I have to almost always stick to naturals, definitely in the cold and flu season, and I still haven’t tried anything from this line (and isn’t this the tobacco one? Or is that wishful thinking. ..) it could be that there’s a slowdown. Which is fine for me, since as a neophyte this is an endless game of catch-up ? Thank you for the draw!

  • Jennifer S. says:

I can’t even keep up with the old releases never mind the new and maybe it’s a good thing it seems slow. I think people are getting tired of endless flankers and would appreciate perfumers coming up with some great new stuff instead. Thanks for the chance!

  • Koyel says:

I’d love to try Slowdive! I think it would be nice if the rate of new releases were to go down. Also, while I haven’t tried Dent de Lait, the descriptions sound awful enough that I don’t really want to….

I’m interested in everyone’s thoughts on Zoologist Camel. I like so many scents from Zoologist, Civet might be in my top ten favorite perfumes ever, but Camel…I don’t know. I blind bought a travel bottle and I love the dryness of the opening but then it just seems to disappear. I don’t really smell the dried fruits and spices and I’m jealous of all the people who say it lasts forever on them! Imaginary Authors is another favorite house with several perfumes I adore, but St Julep vanished from my skin almost before it dried. Anyone else have disappearing perfume syndrome? Or do either of these linger on you, especially Camel?

    • Kandice says:

Rosarita, I have a lot of trouble with “disappearing perfume syndrome”. (I love that term!) There are so many fragrances I have tried and really liked but they are gone in 30 minutes or less. I can’t see buying a full bottle of anything that doesn’t last a few hours at least. I am currently working my way through the Neela Vermiere Discovery Set and am so disappointed because they seem to fade very fast on me. The only Zoologist I have tried was Hummingbird, and I had the same problem. I’d like to try Civet. Does it last OK on you?

      • rosarita313 says:

Hi Kandice! Yes, Civet lasts all day and both Hummingbird and Nightingale had respectable staying power considering I was sampling them in humid summer weather. I really like Dragonfly and need to try it again to see how it lasts.

  • It might actually be a good thing if things slow down, since there is usually an overwhelming inundation of fragrances coming out all the time. That’s okay with me; I’ve been making my way through vintage perfumes, trying as much as I can, for over a year now, and I’m now trying things from the 2000s- 2010. I do sample new releases when really exciting stuff comes out but I’m always wishing for more time to spend with them. Until you get inspired by something else, I’m still enjoying past releases. Oh- you could try on and comment on the new Zoologist perfumes!

  • Jo says:

It’s not a new release but it seems NO ONE has a clue it exists so… Have you tried Guerlain’s Santal Royale? If not, DO IT NOW. It’s gorgeous and seems to be totally and completely ignored, I don’t get it.

  • MMKinPA says:

I love what I have tried from Hiram Green so Slowdive is definitely on my list. My New Years resolution is to work through my large collection of samples and swap/give most of them away after trying, so I won’t be trying any new releases unless they drop into my lap!

    • MMKinPA says:

And thank you for the latest draw!! Excited to try a few new things since I won’t let myself buy anything for a few months!

  • Kandice says:

I want to try Slowdive as well. I would love to find the perfect honey fragrance. Other than that I have been sampling a lot of older releases trying to catch up somewhat with everyone else.

  • VerbenaLuvvr says:

It seems like I’ve tried a lot of new things but not Slowdive yet. I also want to try the new Elizabeth Arden Green Tea Fig, love me some fig fragrances, and the newest Repetto. Always something on the ‘want’ list!

  • Kate E. says:

I feel like there’s always a new LPRN flanker in the works or a new Atelier Cologne but keeping up with new releases is overwhelming. I wish I lived in a city where I could stroll through the fragrance counters from time to time to see what was new in person. Thank goodness for the internet!

  • Tiara says:

Has hell frozen over? Patty doesn’t have anything new to write about?! No need to enter me as I’ve tried Slowdive. Liked it but not enough to buy a FB. Shangri La is the only one I’ve loved so far from Hiram Green. Still not sure I’d get a FB though, but maybe.

  • Tammy says:

I have yet to try any Hiram Green, or any Zoologist. (Camel sounds great to me with the hay notes) I REALLY want to smell Naja (Vero).

Slowdive with the honey notes sounds wonderful to me and I’d love to try that as well, thanks for the chance!

  • Anna Egeria P. says:

I received my prize, the sample of Frederic Malle’s Promise yesterday and I love it!!!! Thank you. I’ve tried Hiram Green’s Slowdive, it’s wonderful and lingers and lingers.

  • Shiva-woman says:

I’m planning on trying both the Serge Lutens DL and the Slow Dive, which I think I’m going tho love.

  • AnnieA says:

Maybe everyone is simply pooped after the holidays and is taking a bit of a break?

  • Heidi C says:

I’d love to try Slowdive! I’m curious about the SL (does the name translate as “Milk Teeth”?), and also about Zoologist Camel — have you tried that yet? I’d be very interested in reading your review of it.

  • Kathleen Smith says:

I usually look to the Posse for information on new releases and inspiration for must-try fragrances! I wouldn’t be aware of a new release before the Posse! New to me (2016 release) that I want to sample is Amber Absolutely EdP by Fort & Manle. From recent releases, I sampled Slowdive (incredible long-lasting honey) and Zoologist Camel (very hay-like at first but gorgeous dry down), and still want to sample Pure Distance Warszawa. I look forward to others’ comments on new releases that I need to know about!
