Carolyn was placing an order for some samples from LuckyScent and asked me if I wanted to throw anything in there so she’d get free shipping … I mean, I was doing her a favor, amirite?!?
Rather than spend hours agonizing over my selection and turning it into A Whole Thing, which I’m perfectly capable of doing, I did a quick pick of four scents that (I think) were on the “new” page that sounded interesting. Let’s see how I did…
Jasmine Freak (Room 1015) was chosen for the name, obviously, because I am, in fact, a jasmine freak. Notes: Mango, black pepper, blackcurrant, sweet orange, Bourbon ylang-ylang, Egyptian jasmine, Indian tuberose, musk, cashmere wood.
Weeelllllll…. it’s nice. It reminds me of that By Kilian (love don’t be shy?) with a bit of a marshmallow-y top and a hint of root beer in the drydown, although less bombshell than the Kilian. But I like my jasmine more unwashed, and this (while certainly potent) isn’t dirty enough, at least on me.
Speaking of By Kilian – Old Fashioned, a 2024 release… can I just say how much I love those on-the-rocks cut glass bottles? I’ve never seen one in real life, I wonder if they’re really that fabulous. “Old Fashioned is a fragrance from another era, a modern refinement in scent, a total take-over of the senses in a Scottish old-fashioned delight.” Notes: wheat absolute, davana, hyper-concentrated cedarwood essence, immortelle, styrax, tolu balm.
For awhile there it felt like Kilian was releasing a scent every month (maybe they still are) and I can live without their lighter, more mass-market offerings. But the brand does layered, liquored depth like nobody else, as befits the heir to the Hennessy cognac makers. Bready, plummy, woodsy deliciousness. Absolutely the wrong choice before heading to the gym (oops!) but perfect on a cold, sunny morning. I wouldn’t say no to a bottle of this or Angels’ Share. Or, you know, both.
(Brandt) London Fog — Did I really ask for this? ::checks nonexistent notes:: huh. Okay then. There’s a poetic paragraph on the Lucky website, conjuring up the smell of the milky beverage. Bergamot, Earl Grey tea, smoky accord, steamed milk, lavender, whipped honey, sandalwood, vanilla absolute, white musk, ambergris. Do I like Earl Grey tea? I do not. In fact I resent it when a restaurant or purveyor contaminates an otherwise pleasant assortment of teas by including Earl Grey, with its overpowering aroma.
Well, this … is not that. I was so flummoxed that I asked Carolyn to take a turn. She hit the nail on the head: it’s very perfume-y, i.e., it doesn’t smell at all like something you’d imbibe. She’s getting smoky sandalwood, mostly, with a drip of honey, if you like that sort of thing. I still have no idea why I ordered it but it’s oddly compelling.
Amouage Lustre – one of their fancy new 30% perfume oil essences, sandalwood chips, custom oakwood barrels, blended by fairies by the light of the full moon, etc. Notes: cardamom, orris, patchouli, sandalwood, cedarwood, benzoin, labdanum, cypriol, styrax, tonka bean, myrrh.
Hey, it’s Amouage, and undeniably gorgeous. But it also smells like what you’d get in the late drydown of a combination of your favorites from the line, if you have any – the Amouage-ade, if you will. Like the Guerlinade, or the way so many Lutens can smell like stewed fruits and woods. However, instead of this single bottle for $540 (!) you could buy four Amouages at online discounters, which is what I’d do given the choice.
Have you tried any of these or scratched an itch for any samples recently, from LuckyScent or elsewhere?

I have experienced those Kilian cutglass bottles… they are absolutely gorgeous!
I also recently ordered some HUDA scents from StC – been wearing them off and on, trying to decide if any are FB – worthy… jury’s still out but I can’t decide if it’s the scents or my wonky sinuses
You know I love the living daylights out of Amouage… but…
OOoooh, I’ll have to go see some IRL sometime — maybe with you! And you do not NEED any more Amouage … or anything else hehe
I love sampling and unfortunately often spend too much of my perfume budget on those alluring little vials. I always have a “window shopping” list going at LuckyScent. I have managed to hold off lately though.
And re Earl Grey, while I don’t drink the tea, I have found a delicious use for it in the NYT recipe for Earl Grey Tea Cake with Chocolate and Orange Zest. I have made it many times and it always disappears quickly. If anyone wants the recipe, please contact me and I can share it! (Springpansy5 in the land of g mail – hope that’s clear, trying to avoid the email bots.)
A list going is a good idea, I’m pretty sure that’s what Carolyn does. I will take your word on the tea cake although we both know perfectly well that if a piece wound up on a plate in front of me, I would absolutely eat it! I love the NYT recipes, I use them all the time.
When I was in my 20s I wrote a short comic poem about how much I detested Earl Grey tea. The gist of it was that it tasted like someone had gotten hand lotion in my tea. I still feel that way. However, I love tea scents and bergamot scents. So there’s no rhyme or reason with me! Thanks for the reviews, March. I haven’t tried these yet. I’ve been going back through my neglected stash of samples and seeing if there are any buried treasures in there I need to wear.
Oh meeee toooooo, scent twin! I love tea scents AND bergamot scents, just not bergamot tea which seems like some sort of mean joke. Yeah wear your buried treasure samples before they evaporate!
Well, that By Killian … immortelle, styrax, tolu balsam. I’m there for anything with immortelle. Will make a note for next time I’m in London. London Fog… that makes me think of raincoats.
Hehe I’d probably have been more up for it if it smelled like wet raincoat. But it was way less awful than it could have been! The Kilian is lovely.
I just need to get off my a$$ and actually go to Luckyscent…
You DO. Honestly, they’d probably have banned me from the store by now if I lived there.
No. I haven’t tried any of these. It sounds like you had some fun with them. Friday, I also ordered samples from Luckyscent, because they offered free shipping on whatever you ordered. I ordered 3 samples that were on my list that they carried. Creed Delphinus, because Portia – Profumum Ichnusa, because fig – Fzotic Lilac Brulee, because lilac! And how could I not check out some others which I probably shouldn’t have but maybe there’s a gem in there…..
I somehow never hit those free ship moments, I know they exist! Those samples sound like the perfect things for this time of year, I hope you picked some winners.
I love Ichnusa. It’s a very different fig with lovely changes over the full drydown.
I’m looking forward to trying it. Thanks for the heads up.
Oooooh I clearly need to try this as well.
