Galbanum Blues

Posse – like so many parts of the world right now, we’re experiencing WILDNESS!  80F days, so hot it starts to wilt the tulips and daffodils, then a vicious storm blasts through, dropping the temps by 40degrees (I do not exaggerate: on Wednesday it was 84F , then we had tornadoes and storms only to have it drop to 42 the next morning!!!).  These weather fluctuations are wreaking havoc on everyone’s bones – and nerves.  And it’s even more disconcerting because the sun is shining its butt off, with that sharp, laser-like light, so you can’t quite countenance hiding on the sofa, under a fleece throw… you should be ENJOYING SPRING!!

What does all of this have to do with galbanum?  Well…

Galbanum, a sticky gum resin derived from plants in the genus Ferula (similar to the rooty carrot note in perfumery), is one of those intense, bitter notes that I rarely wear – but lately I’ve been reaching for perfumes with that note (which I sniff and quickly replace in the Galbanum Box because I do not want to spritz it on and end up in the back of a SWAT van, handcuffed and sobbing like a demented wolverine).  Chanel no 19, which always makes me want to put on a couple extra layers of fleece.  Cristalle which, for as long as it’s been on the market, has always had the capacity to make me cry (not Ugly Cry… but early in my Perfume Life, before I knew anything about notes, etc, it made me wonder if I was losing my mind – who knew perfume could make you melancholy!).  Vent Vert, which I have always loved but always makes me think of walking across a high meadow, mourning the loss of a lover (and it ain’t like that hasn’t happened a time or two).  Green Mansions.  I don’t even try to figure out ‘why’ anymore – it’s the galbanum, with its unctuous bite, much like a cottonmouth slithering through a swamp.

Yet.  And yet.  For all that melancholic, terrifying.  imagery there’s…something…. comforting (?) about the smell. Galbanum is a very adult note; it’s the Wire Mother for when you need a battleaxe in your corner.  I can’t imagine wearing any of my favorites in my younger years (I did try to wear Vent Vert in my mid-teens.  It did not work out well for me – instead of Cathy on the Moor I felt more like I was walking through the halls with my mother draped around my neck like an anaconda)

All that aside, this is the perfect time of year to revisit my galbanum-heavy scents, even if only on paper.  Soon, it’ll be in the 70s-80s every day and …. omg!  I cannot even imagine wearing those in the heat!  In fact, I cannot imagine actually wearing any of them at all – but I do like to smell them.  And then go put on an extra layer of fleece and curl up on (or maybe under) the sofa.

How about you?  Are you a galbanum lover?  Do you have a particular time of year when you wear them (or smell them?).  For those of you who are new to the Galbanum Game there’s a fabulous article by the fabulous Elena Vosnaki on Fragrantica, giving the history of the note.  I don’t think it makes her cry, though. But she’s probably made of sterner stuff than I am.

I don’t think there is a single perfume with galbanum that I don’t like. The bitter greenness feels always so exciting to me. I like when it is raw or combined with flowery notes. My newer favourites are Eclat de Vert by Aerin Perfumes, Puredistance’s Warszawa, Zoologist’s Macaque, Green Spell by Eris Parfums, YSL Blouse. The old favourites are Safari, Private Collection and Bandit.

I know I like galbanum in perfume but that’s all I know. I have a bottle of Silences. Love the bottle, not the perfume. It’s just OK. The other that comes to mind is FM Synthetic Jungle. I like it but don’t want it.
I don’t know of any perfume that makes me crying sad. I think vintage Guerlain Apres L’Ondee has a beautiful melancholy to it and can bring that out in people. I would have loved to have known Jacques Guerlain who had the heart and soul to create this fragrance!

I love galabanum (If not being called spam) in perfume. I think Bandit is watered down these days but it’s still good.

When I was a tyke I wanted a bottle of Cristalle so much- I thought it was so pretty. But it was a “girls” scent (I know, you think I was reaching for Fracas or My Sin) so I was steered to the Eau Sauvage. Now Cristalle doesn’t smell the same to me (although I don’t think I have smelled it in decades) and what they’re selling as Vent Vert is more Vert tan. So I am looking for a new green monster.

That’s so interesting, for whatever reason I thought you loved galbanum, maybe bc it’s so fierce. I am not a fan, particularly (too fierce) but it’s a wonderful green note if it’s far enough back in the chorus.

I love Galbanum, it’s number one on my list of favorites. It doesn’t make me sad at all. For me it’s uplifting and ethereal. I wear them all year round. If you were to do a search by notes of my collection, you’d find that GREEN is the predominant theme. Green florals, Green chypres, Green Orientals, Green woodsy. A deeper introspective search tells me that my dad was the well-scented person in my growing up years, and he wore a lot of scents with galbanum and vetiver. I think that influenced me. I’m always drawn to Green notes: galbanum, vetiver, iris, lily of the valley, hyacinth, lilac, etc. Today I’m wearing a sample of PdN Week-end a Deauville, which is a Green floral.

    • Neva says:

Oooohhh Dina, you still have Week-end a Deauville? How wonderful! I had it a long time ago and allso the following variations (Week-end in Normandy, Weekend) because I used to go through a small bottle each year. It is still recognizable but each new bottle is a slight disappointment :-/

I’m in your opposite corner with galbanum. Love the stuff! It’s a staple in my wardrobe, always suitable to me. Green & astringent chypres have always been in my armoury. OG Cristalle EdT is my most loved & the most worn fragrance over my 64 years.
So interesting how notes affect mood

Actually looked up galbanum so I wasn’t making assumptions. I know No 19 does not work on me, though I’ve tried numerous times.

Your weather … that would do my head in. Hopefully Mother Nature will get over whatever is bothering her and things will smooth out…

  • Portia says:

GALBANUM! Love it Musette. So many of my faves are heavy on it. It’s the furry green smoothness of velour to me, with no sharp spikes or confrontational attacks like angelica or wormwood (both of which I also love)
    Portia x

Hi Musette- thankyou for this post- it went straight to my heart, bringing back my younger days when I DRENCHED myself in No 19, Cristalle, Aliage, Calandre..so many more..(my poor long suffering workmates, I must have gassed them, no complaints, but probably down to manners more than anything else)The greens are long overdue for a comeback, but in the meantime I’ve just ordered my first bottle of Silences, just the ticket for our southern hemisphere autumn and winter. Thanks again for the memories x

    • Musette says:

Ha! Silences!!! I deliberately didn’t include it in the list because it’s a very soft galbanum – I actually have – and WEAR(!) that one, on spring days when the weather is juuuust right

    • Dina C. says:

I love Silences too! It’s like a deep green forest to me.
