Posse! Like pretty much everyone else in the Northern Hemisphere I am suffering from the Winter Blues. Trying (and not doing too badly) to practice Gratitude – the weekend brought a fresh hit of snow, which I always find demoralizing because it usually blends in with the grey-white sky and is Just Too Much – but this time I stopped and took a look at my Situation: at the time I was having my pity party I realized that
- I was in a warm(ish – it’s old and drafty) house, wrapped head to toe in fleece
- I’d just made an excellent pot of pourover coffee
- I was watching my boortz sucking down chow in the boort feeders and drinking their fill in the Winter Bath (and bonus points for those who know why we call them ‘boortz’. Hint: the fabulous Sam Rockwell is behind it)
- I was notNOT in a box under a bridge. Seriously – Life changes on a whim and … well. I am still warm, clean, dry etc.
But even with all That Grat, Mr Chartwell (another bonus point) was nipping at my heels, so I decided to take a hot shower, slather a half-jar of body creme and reflect on what I wanted to wear that day (see Gratitude), perfumewise.
I wanted something that sort of gave a nod to leather/caramel notes but also had some flowers therin – sort of a ‘warm floral’ if you will. Something I really didn’t know all that well. So I stuck my hand in the samples area of the Messy Armoire (again More Gratitude) and came up with Azzaro Couture, which was a blind choice from Surrender to Chance – I think it came either in a gourmand group (?) or the Apricot group (insert shrug emoji)
Notes, from Fragrantica (which I think may be AI generated now – it’s got a weird tone to it and a whole buncho typos and is just… odd): Rose, Galbanum, Ambrette, Iris, Mimosa. My sample is from Aurelien Guichard’s 2008 revival of the 1974 original and the notes would suggest it’s less chypre and more straightforwardly floral.
Except I get nunnadat. What ‘I’ get (and this may be me) is a sweetish floral-caramel skin scent that turns slightly acrid after … 30 minutes… (?) on my skin. And even though it sounds like faint praise, it really isn’t. I wasn’t looking for Warm and Sweet – I wanted something that had just a little bit of bite to it, not “I just got bitten by a snake” bite… more.. “dang. I just got stuck by a thorn’ – and Azzaro Couture delivered. I wouldn’t have known there was iris therein but now that I do know I realize that’s what I’m smelling on the drydown, that acrid, rooty note. Iris, especially the root, is one of the most beguiling notes in perfumery for me. It plays extremely well on my skin and warms up without losing that rooty, dirty ‘snap’.

I have no idea why I am getting the warm, leather/caramel hints but I’m 1. glad they’re there and 2. glad they’re just a hint. I have plenty of those beauties. This? This is a weirdly interesting mashup of notes that I have been huffing all day, marveling at the shifts from warm to acrid root to chilly floral … and back again.
I’m also particularly glad that I am in a warm house, with a hot shower (and pourover coffee). So I’ll continue to practice Gratitude! Oh! A reason to celebrate!!! Sunset today is 5:08p today. Tomorrow? 5:10!!! Squeeee! We’re gainin’ on it!
Have any of you tried Azarro (either the original or the revamped)? Your thoughts? My sample came from surrendertochance.com and full bottles are inexpensive at e-tailers (though I am not sure I need another bottle of perfume). Are you looking forward to warmer weather?

I have not tried this, and yes — you and I chat about our gratitude pretty regularly. Not our favorite time of year for sure, but we have our health and our sanity (mostly) and we will just keep on keeping on. Hugs.
Thanks, sweetie! Xoxo
Hiya Musette,
I’ve not tried the Azzaro.
Exciting that your days are lengthening. Now you just have to hold on tight. Spring is on the way.
I was unsure what a pourover coffee is? Looked it up. Apparently there are a thousand different ways, heats, times and apparatus. What version of it do you do?
Portia x
Lol! I am a SAVAGE when it comes to making coffee! It’s a regular glass carafe with a regular gold mesh filter. I drop a beensy bit of vanilla in the bottom of the pot and a pinch of table salt atop the grounds … pour boiling water out of my electric kettle and that’s it. No fiddling about with Specialty Stuff
Sounds pretty good to me. I’m still perking or plunging my coffeee
We avoided a major mess in Houston since we didn’t get the wintry mix that was predicted. I’m going to make a pour-over coffee right now. I have on SL Fleurs de Citronnier.
I’m so happy to hear that. You guys don’t handle winter weather very easily!
Dear Musette,
Here in Virginia we are chipping our way out of the ice storm we had over the weekend. No school, work, trash service today. My good intention for the day is to tackle a huge pile of ironing. Does anyone else still iron? I haven’t tried any Azzaro that I can remember. That one sounds nice — I love iris and galbanum, two of my top favorites. That “bite” is galvanizing. It gives me umph to get on with my day. Maybe lift you out of the winter doldrums. Well, that plus the shower and the pour-over coffee! xoxoxo
I do iron, but not a lot. My iron is an old beat-up thing but it still works. I don’t iron with the metal antique one that I have that had to be heated up on a stove and weights a ton. 😉 I use it as a doorstop or display it among my plants.
What a cool idea for a doorstop!
Musette LOVES to iron. She finds it very relaxing! I have the tools if I really “need” them but I tend to reach for the steamer, and I don’t leave things in the dryer or in piles. And I tell myself linen looks better wrinkled 😀
I absolutely do!
I love to iron. It’s a very calming activity. I iron my bedsheets right after I pull them out of the dryer and put them on the bed
I too have a major case of the grumps. Not sure if I can dig out much gratitude.
I’m pretty much bed bound. After a great week of gym classes, including a Pilates class that brought home how much I’ve improved at everything, hubris literally bit my on my right glute, hip & lumbar spine.
Was I exercising, found things I shouldn’t? Nah, I squatted to get a bag of sofrito from the bottom freezer drawer. Standing up & AARRRRGGGGHHH FEF! Sharp stabbing pain from lumbar spine, across my glute, hip & down my thigh. Couldn’t weight bear on my right leg. Howling agony!
I’ve had heat pads on & taken the really good codeine/paracetamol combo for 36 hours now & can get to the en suite by myself.
One bright light is that I’ve found the physio who treated my back pain with conventional physio & acupuncture. I have managed to get an appointment for early next week.
DH has brought me a nice mug of strong builders tea & taken Mr Jarvis to the groomers for doggie spa day. Maybe I am grateful for that.
Oh ouch! I’m so sorry! Hope you feel better very soon!
DagNABBIT!
But Yeah! That’s definitely something to be grateful for, that you have help! Tbh, well… let’s just say that even when El O was here, it was a crapshoot
I am looking forward to no rain. I will try for a bit of gratitude but the second big storm in a week is moving through and most roads are closed here. It’s dead quiet and the road int the village is flooded, as are most roads into town. I walked the village to check on things. Will put on Fig Nois again because it’s lovely and I need lovely today. At least the daffs are coming up.
Stay safe!
Oh lordy I do remember trying Azzaro something back in the day and liked it- whatever it was it was a very tailored citrus that seemed very Italian. But I didn’t buy it.
I was thinking about you (and Patty in Kansas and March in New Mexico) dealing with the storm. Glad you came through it okay. I used to love a snow day. It was the days before and after..
I was trying to decide between a trip to Morocco and a Generac. Considering how often we lose power… Generac comes first
Warm weather and more daylight, yes please. It’s been bitterly cold here.
I always appreciate and am thankful for any and all good in my life. What I have been doing lately is changing thought (and to an extent speaking) habits from negative to more positive by dropping the word don’t. Instead of I don’t want whatever it is, it becomes what do I want and think or say that. Works for me.
That’s a great reframing hack Maya!
What a great idea!!!
