After a couple of weeks of on and off rain we had a decent Saturday so I decided to go for a walk. Now, walking doesn’t mean not shopping, so there were a few stops.
First was Santa Maria Novella on Melrose Place, where I picked up some of their famous pot pourri. I love the smell of this and have been using it for years. When it loses it’s “charge” I use it in the car. Fresh out of the package in an enclosed space like an auto that is subject to heat means that the smell, while lovely, can be overpowering. The leftover stuff is perfect for that. I put it in a clean white sock and put it under the seat because I have little pens and change in the ashtray.
I didn’t dawdle because, walking. I stopped into the Malle store but neither of the SA’s I knew were there and the girl who was where was busy with a customer (but did say “hello” when I came through the door- this is called foreshadowing, I guess.) and I could see nothing new, so onward.

Angelyne’s famous pink Corvette
I walked over to the Beverly Connection, which is not to be confused with the Beverly Center. The latter has it’s own issues, what with it not being the “cool mall” that is was in the 80’s. But then I don’t think I am as cool as I was in the 80’s either. The Beverly Connection came about through combining various parcels including an existing drug store (famous for Angelyne sightings back in the day.) It had at various times, a multiplex movie theater (some with almost comically small screens), a Ralph’s grocery store, and a very reliable Old Navy. Now it seems to be a discount version of those discount malls people make a day trip to. Saks Fifth Off, Marshalls, J Crew Factory, and Nordstrom Rack have been joined by a new Bloomingdales Outlet to make it the central location of stuff you didn’t want the fust time but may like better since it’s marked down. Saks has declared bankruptcy, so I am not sure if my Saks Card will be joining Barneys in my credit card graveyard. Saks won’t hurt as much as Barneys personally if it goes under, but still, Saks? I hope they restructure and survive.

So on to le labo. I thought I would check out what’s up with the new Violette “in situ” as it were.
Which leads me to my first rant. I walk in and there are three SA’s and one shopper. SA #1 is staring at their phone. SA #2 is staring into space while SA #3 is attending to the customer. None of them look up, or over, when I walk in.

Le Labo. And Cupcakes.
Now I have not worked in retail for a very long time, but when I was managing the store I worked at in Beverly Hills there was one hard and fast rule. The customer is ALWAYS greeted. Even if it’s a smile and a nod if you are on the phone or with a customer. In any case I was able to pry the attention of one of them from watching the dust motes in the air long enough for him to let me know that Violette 30 will be out in stores in February. To his credit he was quite pleasant when his attention was actually, finally, turned towards me.
To my credit I did not walk into Magnolia Bakery and just inhale.

The Farmer’s Market. You can buy groceries here without a blood test.
So I walked down 3rd until I hit Fairfax. By this time I was over the walking and decided to take the bus back to the apartment. My Transit App told me I had some time to kill so I thought I would hit the Whole Foods and pay using my Amazon Visa at the self checkout. First it asked for my left handprint. Then my right. Then my phone number. I left before it asked for a stool sample.
I caught my bus back and stopped at the grocery store around the corner. They sold me food without asking for or a written essay as to why I wanted guacamole for dinner.

All I wanted was some guacamole..
One of the things I did this week was finally changing the battery in my bathroom scale. Stepping on it I find that I have lost about 50lbs over the past year. Which is good news for me. And may be why I am so snippy. No GLP for me (can’t afford it) and I have apparently dieted myself out of the point that insurance would say that I needed it anyway. Of course, these days in Los Angeles they are practically selling Trizepatide at Freeway offramps, like flowers on Mother’s Day or flags on July fourth. But so far I haven’t gone for it.
So far.
Several friends are using it (and I am not going to go and say they didn’t need it- oops, I just did. Oh, well. Snippy!) and I am not saying I wouldn’t. But if I can keep convincing myself that ice cream is poison and kale smoothies are really gourmet-level delicious perhaps I won’t need it. I am not passing judgement on those who do take it. Whatever journey you need to take to health, good for you.

Sugar? Or something worse?
Personally I think that Gloria Swanson was right and it’s all sugar addiction. I’d bet that 90% of alcoholics are actually addicted to sugar, which is why so many of them turn to sweets in recovery. Now this is just my crack-pot theory and I don’t even play a doctor on TV. but that’s what I am seeing for me. I’ve been a sugar junkie on and off since I was a kid and would stay up all night watching old movies on Channel 27 in Boston and drinking coke and eating Oreos. At least I don’t do that anymore..
Sometimes the time between recognition and action is a while. I would like to drop at least another 50 and I will be at the weigh I should be. (before you chime in telling me that is too much, it’s not. Despite having big shoulders and a deep chest I have no hips and teensy wrists. I am built like a martini glass, just at this point one with a flotation device around it’s stem.
So what did you do for the weekend? I hope you didn’t get smacked by the snow- one of my friends in Wisconsin was promised it would hit south of them but awoke to four inches of powder in Shorewood and below freezing temps. I love Wisconsin, but oh that weather..
I purchased my pot pourri at the store, I think it was $35 for the packet.

This was such an enjoyable read—wry, observant, and very relatable. Your Saturday walk turned into a perfect snapshot of city life, retail quirks, and small personal victories. Congratulations on the weight loss—that’s a huge accomplishment, especially done the old-fashioned way. And your take on sugar addiction honestly resonates more than you might think. Also, that Santa Maria Novella pot pourri trick is genius. Thanks for sharing a slice of your weekend—it felt like walking along with you (minus the bus ride and the self-checkout interrogation).
Always enjoy your LA dispatches! I love SMN potpourri, I’m still sentimentally holding on to mine from Florence, though it barely smells of anything but dust now. Congrats on the disciplined weight loss!
Thank you!
I would love to visit Florence. Oh well, one day.
Thank you for the walk round. I’m still a hobbling goblin. It gave me a wee bit of virtual sun & vit D.
You aren’t snippy enough or you would have interrupted the SA playing in their phone.
You have the Irish body shape as well as the Irish eyes
Well I hope you’re on the mend soon.
Yeah, I have the Irish eyes. Someone told me the body is like a Welshman, but what do I know?
My DH is Welsh. His family is cylindrical.
Ah okay. Someone funning me.
I love this walkaround! And YES, SAY HELLO, SAs. Are you too cool to say hello? Give me a break. Thought of you when I was buying roast beast at Whole Foods yesterday lol (it’s literally the only place here I can buy in-house roasted, which is slightly more rare, vs. Boar’s Head.)
Whole Foods actually benefitted from Amazon buying it. It went to from Whole Paycheck to somewhat reasonable on a lot of things. I’ve never had an issue but maybe I never actually tried to pay with my Amazon Visa
Hey Tom,
Walking?!? in LA? I thought it was totally frowned upon.
Why do they need three SAs in Le Labo? So weird.
LOVE SMN but never smelt their pot pourri. Now I have a lemming.
Sadly, I don’t even know who Angelyne is.
Portia xx
It’s somewhat okay if you’re walking between shops.
Oh my dear, Angelyne is a local legend. She appeared one day on billboards all over Hollywood; a pneumatic, busty bleach-blond posing on a pink Corvette.
She is brilliant at self-promotion. Famous for being famous and bridge the days between Gabor and Kardashian sisters. She parlayed it into the opening credits of the “Moonlighting” TV series with Bruce Willis and Cybill Shepard and a cameo in “Earth Girls are Easy”. She had a biopic done on her in 2022 with Emily Rossum as she.
She would get (in ad trades with a local Chevy dealer) a new ‘vette every few years which she drove around LA and sold her merch out of. What I can say for her is that she was a habitue of the local Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, where she was lovely to the staff and was well liked by them.
I think she moved to Thousand Oaks (where that perfume shop we took the bus to was) just before Covid I think. I miss seeing her. It made my day every time.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angelyne
I bet she misses the notoriety.
I am sure that wherever she is she is being as Angelyne as she wants to be. Even in a wheelchair.
And… is the Angelyne billboard still up? I was always so mystified by that ( and her) , at the time not understanding the Fame for Fame’s Sake concept
She really was ahead of the curve!
I don’t think any of them are. I think one of them should be kept up. Maybe on the side of the new County Museum of Art. It could do with some whimsy.
Lol! on the Whole Foods experience! I had something similar happen… only at TJ’s in Chicago z
…and in the reverse!
I wrote a….CHECK!
The ensuing confusion and hijinks were insane and I would’ve seen it through… but it was 5p and folks just wanted to get their guacamole so…
A check! I think I still have those for.. I don’t know what. Now that I do the DMV stuff online (except for the smog check) I am not even sure what corner of the desk this migrated to.
Your walk was very entertaining, Tom, thanks for taking us along. I always love when you interweave the local history of Beverly Hill’s and Los Angeles geography. I’m so envious of your Santa Maria Novella store and potpourri purchase. I’d love to go to their historic store in Florence, Italy someday. I remember when malls used to have Crabtree & Evelyn stores with big glass crocks filled with potpourri that smelled so good (but dusty too). I loved those stores. Now I’m in the mood for guacamole. Rats!
Oh I used to love Crabtree and Evelyn. It smelled so good. I also remember when Banana Republic used to sell semi-safari ware and have a Jeep in the window.
Yes! I remember the Banana Republic jeep and the Safari clothes!
I actually liked what Banana Republic became- they had quite nice, stylish work clothing. Not even crazy expensive.
I love that kind of walking. It was great to do it with you. Sort of Flanneuring?
My son is in the process of weight loss. I think he’s shed 30lbs at this point. I have nothing against the weight loss jabs but do think it’s worth not letting one’s self run away with things. Eg, India Knight here looks to have lost a lot of weight using them and her face is starting to look quite gaunt.
We’re still in flood mode. Hugest sigh and big grump.
Like I wrote I have nothing against the jab, but I have questions about the side effects and what happens when you go off it. Do you turn into a ravening thing, hitting the dessert bar at Hometown Buffet and eating your way out?
And Ozempic feet?
Had to look up Ozempic feet. Uh, wow?
Yeah, right? Will starlets be getting a$$ fat (if they can find any) in the soles of their feet?
I hope the floods recede soon.
I second enjoying the walk with you. You keep things interesting and fun.
Definitely stayed inside this weekend. We had the powder snow and extreme, bitter cold. Tonight it’s supposed to go down to 12F so not exactly warming up yet. I’m wearing Masque Milano Tango. It works well on me in this weather.
Also, congrats on your weight loss! A martini glass?! What an image! lol. I’m glad you did it naturally. I have a bad gut feeling about the shot, but to each their own.
a “bad gut” feeling is what you can get from these, apparently.
But like I said, never say never.
Ooooooh, so bad or maybe so good!!! lolololololol
I guess if you look good that’s all that matters. At least in Hollywood.
Ooof- I remember those temps. Better to stay indoors.
Yup, NE weather and MO weather are quite similar. Maybe next time I should move to Hawaii – balmy breezes, clear blue waters, great food, air perfumed with flowers, and the night sky is amazing!!! Hawaii is in the middle of the Pacific so no light pollution at night. I’ve never seen stars like that. Sigh.
I’d love to visit. I had a friend who lived there and didn’t care for it. She returned to Wisconsin to raise her two boys. I’m sure they were thrilled when they heard that one.
I know some people like that, service couples. Both loved Alaska and hated Hawaii. I know I can gush about Hawaii, but the first time I walked into the Maui sunshine, my first thought was – OMG I’m home. I’ve heard of others who had that same feeling, weird….. and wonderful.
I can understand that. I felt that way about LA
I enjoyed that walk with you, Tom. Especially since I’ve been stuck inside a few days due to frozen white stuff outside. I’m ready for Spring but the forecasters say more snow this weekend. Noooooo
Ooof- but you do get that magical day where all that grey explodes into green. And I am sure it can’t come soon enough.
