Rainy Day

Well, the rains came finally. There’s a line in the beginning of “Sunset Blvd.” that’s something along the idea that the rains come in February: A big package of rain that floods the streets and causes traffic to back up like nothing you’ve seen. It really is like somewhere in their little heads it doesn’t commute that they are INSIDE the car so driving like you’re an extra in “Smokey and the Bandit” is neither necessary nor helpful.

My God Dog. He likes treats.

I did go out in it. The combination of rain and a holiday made me think that a Costco run might not be a bad idea. Well it’s wasn’t, and I got in and out with my packets of smoked salmon without incident. It was short and intense, but not lasting; I didn’t even need to drain the pool.

We seem to be on a comfort jag this week- food and tea. I will admit that I could use a nice cup of cocoa on a day like today (and almost never get a hankering for it otherwise) and perhaps some nice shortbread biscuits. I could use my god-dog as well as a nice lap-warmer. Of course I would need to lay in some extra shortbread.

What are you doing today? Staying in? Braving the wind/cold/rain/snow? I am going to run to the bank before it starts to rain again..

As Cinnamon says 2 dry days in the last 50 here too. Those dry days were so cold the saturated clay earth froze solid. Pretty, sparkling frost but so bone nithering.
Cold , wet days respond well to Horlicks or Ovaltine hot malted milk drinks. They’re hugs in mugs at bedtime.

It’s been a few days of that here. One day 85 and sunny the next 45 and raining. Welcome to February

It’s cold in Seattle and there are rumors it might snow…seems doubtful to me. It is definitely hot chocolate season. There is a local restaurant (Le Pichet) that makes an ultra rich hot chocolate that is amazing! They serve it with a huge scoop of whipped cream. The perfect cold weather evil treat.

There used to be a teensy little museum in Santa Monica that had a little cafe attached that did that. So wonderful at the beach were it can get surprisingly chilly.

I have a list of errands to run today, but before I head out into the cloudy weather with a chance of rain I’m having my hot tea. Like you folks, I only crave cocoa a couple times per year. Today is not that day.

We’ve been enjoying our Scary Early Spring Too Soon- but luckily it’s staying in the 50s-60s so not too dangerous for Spring ephemera. The combination of raking /lopping / hauling PLUS gym has me grateful for the fact that I can still do this, albeit not like I used to.

It’s pouring — yet again. I think we had two days during which the sun shone for several hours before we returned to rain. It has thus rained every day since the turn of the year.

The pot holes are enormous — and quite dangerous when you don’t see them for all the water.

Hot choc. I crave this every once in a while — and then will have it from the farm shop until my body/brain says no more. (It comes with mini marshmallows and whipped cream.)

It would be fun if we had CostCos/Trader Joes here. Everyone says such good things about them.

    • Tom says:

CostCo is useful mainly if you have a big house and a family. I only keep the membership to go twice a year or so and buy lox. (they refused to step back from inclusivity and diversity, so they can have my membership money.)

Our strangely warm (for US) weather continues. We’ve had some snow, but we’ve also had a number of days in the 50s which is WILD for Jan/Feb. We had 11 days in December that were record highs for the date. So global warming and we could really use the precipitation but I’m happy not to be living at 10-20F every day. Honestly a rainy day or three here is cause for celebration.

I loved living in the midwest. Great people, beautiful area, and OMG the only place I’ve ever lived I felt SHORT.

      But that weather..

  • Portia says:

We are having a glorious sunshiny day today Tom. There is shortbread opened on our TV table and I do enjoy it with a cuppa in the scorching heat.
I’m also going out into it later this evening. Our local grocery is open till 10pm so I can await the cool of night.

I’m glad you’re getting nice weather. One of these days I need to get down there, if only to watch the bathwater drain anti-clockwise.

I remember seeing this kind of water in LA. Well dressed women walking nonchalantly on the sidewalk ankle+ deep in rushing water. Today was a nice day here – in the 60’s and tomorrow will be great! It’s supposed to hit 70F. Unbelievable! It’ll be warmer here than in LA, in February. I’m even starting to get some spring fever. Of course, the weather can turn quickly.
