Hiram Green Ultra and Arcadia

First off, really sorry about the huge image. Can’t figure out how to get rid of it.

So, the March saying of comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb. Alas, not this year. Rather, in like a lion and out like a lion. In between, we did have some lovely weather.

I went to the local tulip festival. Not quite the Keukenhof in the Netherlands but really lovely. Brought home some flowers – plus had a nice hot chocolate.

Hiram Green. I have a lot of time for HG perfumes. I own the now discontinued Dilettante and Slowdive, which is still sold: the former is big flower/fruit with orange flower, petitgrain and orange; the latter tobacco, honey, hay (gooey, sticky, gorgeous).

(my hiram green pic didn’t work — or worked oddly — so here’s the website link: here)

The perfumes are now harder to find in the UK between Brexit and tariffs. However, sometimes needs must. I saw a comment somewhere about a newer addition called Ultra and ended up at the HG site in Europe. Four samples later and here we are.

Today it’s Ultra and Arcadia. The former is a 2025 release, the latter was launched in 2022.

First off, I’ve finally decided the is a HG base and while I like it (maybe it’s tobacco-amber-ish) I can imagine it’s not for everyone. Especially when that’s what you end up with in a white or green floral and are expecting something lighter.

Anyway, onward.

Ultra. Notes include neroli, ylang, narcissus, jasmine, floral necter (ok…), leather, hay, tobacco and resins. This is so not me but I quite like it. Per the marketing material, this is all about the 1980s: big this, big that, excess, disco and synth music, big energy, neon, etc. I lived in NYC in the ‘80s and it was all these things plus dirty, a bit scary, incredibly interesting.

Initially I get powdery florals with a lovely scratchy narcissus aspect. And definitely pong, but also green. It’s not so much big as full of presence. Sweaty dancers at Danceteria or the Limelight. People dressing to be noticed. Fun but also dark and a little bit shocking.

The drydown is that tobacco-amber thing. I’d not paid attention to my wrist for several hours and was surprised by that when settling in bed.

I keep saying I don’t need things but I will use all of my sample of this. It is a very good perfume and it reminds me of a certain period of my life which was very different from any other.

Arcadia. Notes include bergamot, lavender, jasmine, rose, spices, resins, tonka bean, aged patchouli (??) and sandalwood. This is labelled a Fougere and fougeres are definitely not usually my thing. Lavender and ferniness doesn’t seem to work that well between my skin and my nose.

Anyway, this starts bergamot and lavender – not auspicious. So, why did you include in the samples, you ask. Well, I’m not sure – I can’t recall. In any case, the description is ‘In the idyllic, unspoiled wilderness of Arcadia babbling brooks meander through mountains covered in dense forests and the air is filled with the sound of humming insects and twittering birds’. Ok, fine.

Thing is, after that sort of cold opening, this moves along nicely, gets more musky and sits better on my skin. And then the drydown is that tobacco, hay, honey thing but modified a bit (making it less heavy and sweet) by the Fougere-ness of the perfume.

All in, two very interesting choices.

As noted above, HGs are difficult to procure here but a number of places in the US stock the brand and it’s easy to get in Europe.

I love both Dilettante and Slowdive! These new ones sound … okay..
But ! Your beautiful kitchen! Swoon!

  • Tom says:

I remember trying Arcadia and one other and liking them a lot. Then I got distracted by something shiny..

  • AnnieA says:

An old perfume pal used to rush to try out all of HG’s offerings, and bought many of them. I had a travel spray of Slowdive, which I would wear as a night-time scent, despite being a lot stronger than what I would normally wear then. I suspect it’s now finished it , though, as it’s not in the decant section of my collection.

    • cinnamon says:

I love Slowdive but it’s not a frequent choice for me any more. And Dilettante is gorgeous. But again I don’t reach for it a lot. Still, I admire what the house does and the bottles are great.

  • Maya says:

I adored some of Hiram Green’s early works! I loved Moon Bloom and the original Voyage. My daughter adored Dilettante and it was gorgeous on her. And that was it. I tried all his other perfumes, except Ultra, looking for another special one and they were all failures for me, so I ended it between us. lol.

    • cinnamon says:

I don’t recall Moon Bloom working on me. I do think Ultra is worth a go. The ’80s vibe is so much fun but also a bit dark.

  • Eldarwen22 says:

The only Hiram Green Perfumes that I have tried was Moon Bloom and Tryst. I wasn’t too enthused. I could have loved Tryst but how the orange blossom smelled like I urinated on myself 2 days ago and couldn’t be bothered to shower. Maybe I want my orange blossom to be a little less intense.

The weather has been odd here as well. We have a couple days in the 60’s and 4 that are in the 30’s.

    • cinnamon says:

I think that triad of smells (tobacco, honey, hay) can go way wrong. I am now on my third one of the samples and in this it’s not doing good things on me.

Weather seems to be loopy everywhere.

  • March says:

I need to ask Carolyn to order some HG samples, clearly. One of those lines I never run across in the wild, and given that base I bet I’d love it.

    • cinnamon says:

As noted I have a lot of time for HG perfumes. And given you like MdB by Lutens there might be something the house does that makes you happy.

Looks like Lucky Scent stocks them.

  • Dina C. says:

Beautiful tulips, Cinnamon! Love the huge variety of colors. Our weather has been all over the place too: as hot as summer and then plunging down into near freezing temps. It’s cuckoo!

I think several years ago some nice perfume gal gave me a Hiram Green sample or two. I might still have them buried in my sample drawer. I need to dig through and look for them. Ultra sounds very over-the-top. Just like the big shoulder pads and stuff from the 80s. Arcadia sounds very ferny. I’m not sure I’m a fan of fougeres either. Does the tobacco-hay-honey thing remind you of SL Chergui at all? Because that note triad really reminds me of Chergui.

    • cinnamon says:

Thank you on the tulips. It was a wonderful afternoon out. I hope it becomes an annual thing.

I haven’t smelled Chergui in a very long time so can’t say on the tobacco etc. Maybe more incense?

  • Portia says:

Hiram Green does some lovely things and some total disasters for me. Also his bottles evaporate, which is a bummer. I like that he makes interesting things, not available from anywhere else.
Moon Bloom and Dilettante are my faves.
    Portia xx

    • cinnamon says:

Interesting on evaporation. Haven’t had that issue. It’s really too bad the brand discontinued Dilettante. One of those head-shaking things.

  • alityke says:

Never explored HG despite all the buzz. Too difficult to get in the UK as you say. Honey doesn’t do anything for me. Maybe that’s another reason. You make them sound very interesting, especially your having two full bottles. Might have to do some exploring

    • cinnamon says:

Ordering from the Netherlands site proved seamless. The honey is neither too sweet or the weird urinous one found in the Lutens Miel. Finally, my Slowdive is a smaller size, not a 50ml bottle. I haven’t checked if the still offers that sort of thing but will double check.

      • March says:

hehe but I LOVE MdB, I have a bottle and I wear it! Strategically.

        • Tom says:

I have got to go spelunking and fine mine. Oh how I wish they’d bring that one back..

        • Musette says:

I thought of you when I stumbled across my sample of MdB – that weird, urinous note is right, cinnamon!
“ ha! I’ll bet March LOVES this! “ was truly my second thought … right after… ‘ yikes! I forgot about the pee!!!”
