Looking for Linden

My morning dog walk now includes a lengthy stop under the two linden trees on the next block. They’re side by side, the only two in the neighborhood as far as I know, and this time of year they’re blooming and smell glorious. From a purely landscaping perspective, lindens are viewed as a mixed bag – they’re messy, dense, and can attract aphids and Japanese beetles – but these two, abuzz with bees, are adding a bit of joy to my days. I think they’re little leaf lindens from Europe vs. the native American linden, which can get massive.

I somehow missed the linden perfume train, or only got on it briefly before I was off, chasing the next thing. I remember linden / tilleul / lime (not the citrus) fragrances being big about 20 years ago, when the perfume universe was smaller. There was D’Orsay Tilleul which I remember trying and not loving (too musky, maybe?) and there’s one from Le Galion. A bit of googling also shows a linden tea from Harney & Sons… L’Artisan La Chasse has linden, I think, but it’s more a mélange of white flowers. The Jo Malone Lime Blossom, which I also don’t remember loving, is discontinued so no joy there.

So, do you have a favorite linden fragrance? I see the D’Orsay is also discontinued, but I’m up for hunting down some samples of other linden fragrances. Any body products? I think a linden shower gel would be fantastic. What’s up with the linden tea, should I buy some? I like jasmine tea, after all. I bet there’s linden honey or maybe jam out there… yep. Thoughts and recommendations for any and all things linden?  It looks like Portia and Musette have given me somewhere to start, anyway.

Also, not linden, but: I am thrilled with my jasmine which is now blooming in its place of honor near the front door. It’s an old-fashioned jasmine which is not cold-hardy here; I built it an entire fort for over-wintering, then crossed my fingers. It’s back and much more vigorous than last year when I only got a few blooms. It smells absolutely heavenly.

Definitely Under the Linden by Baruti.

  • Tom says:

You know, I actually don’t know if I have ever smelled Linden. I couldn’t pick it out of a line-up, anyway. I will have to investigate.

DSH has a few fragrances which are nice. I have a small sample of Cyan and I’ve tried French Lime Blossom.

    • March says:

I really need to take a gander at the DSH website — I really like a lot of her fragrances but the site can be a bit overwhelming!

  • cinnamon says:

Did Del Rae (sadly now gone) have a linden fragrance? Not sure why that popped into my head except I think of Amoreuse every once in a while.

My jasmine is starting to get buds. Next door’s very neglected mock orange is doing its thing. I wish she’d look after her garden, particularly the philadelphus, which is just gorgeous.

    • March says:

Oh, the neighbors! I don’t understand having those gorgeous plants and not giving them some gardening love.

Linden & Hawthorne blossom are my annual treats. I’m missing this year’s blooms, long dog walks are beyond me at present.
I own Idle by Romilly Wilde, a skincare brand. It’s as rare as unicorn poop. Linden isn’t listed, but to my nose it is a photorealistic linden. Marc Antione Barrois Tilia is super pretty. D’Orsay Tilia was relaunched under the name TILLEUL D’AILLEURS. C.G. I haven’t tried it but it has been recommended to me.
4160 Tuesdays London Linden disappointed me. More to do with my expectations than the fragrance I suspect.

    • March says:

Taking notes! It looks like Romilly Wilde is on a break but I’ll poke around. Some of these I can get from Surrender to Chance.

Love the scent of jasmine and even drinking Jasmine green tea. March, your quest for Linden interests me. I have La Chasse and immediately thought of it. But here’s another idea: Imaginary Authors The Soft Lawn has Linden in it. It’s a tennis court themed scent that even includes the note of the tennis ball. Not sure I can discern it, but it’s a nice grassy floralish scent. I agree that Linden tea and body wash would be nice. I drink Lotus green tea as well, and I’m a big fan of elderflower, so what’s one more flower, right?!

    • Musette says:

I have some linden tea! Got it at one of my Asian grocery stores awhile back

    • March says:

I can get a sample of Soft Lawn from Surrender to Chance, I think! I’m going to look around locally for linden tea, it clearly exists and I bet I can find it here.

  • Portia says:

MARCH! I bloody love Le Galion Tilleul. It’s just ridiculously gorgeous. I can’t remember the smell of the tree but it’s a beautiful fragrance.
    Dog walking is so zen.
    Portia xx

That is 100% on my try list, your review got me. Coco doesn’t mind the pause at the linden trees because there’s a lawn there, a rare thing in our area 😀

  • Tara C says:

4160 Tuesdays has a newish scent calked London Linden which is quite nice and springy.

  • Musette says:

I’m still loving April Aromatics Unter den Linden… which I will wear tonight, after I shower all obug spray off!

And I think I have a box of linden tea here somewhere…

  • Maya says:

I can’t help with linden. My parents had a linden tree in their yard and I do remember it smelling great, but I never got into linden perfumes. Like you, I kept chasing other scents.

    • Maya says:

Forgot to add – your jasmine plant is lovely. I can imagine how those small white blossoms scent the air!!

      • March says:

Thank you! They are SO pretty even if they don’t last long (individually) and it seems happy by the front door which has afternoon shade so I can smell it. Now that it’s warm enough to leave the front door/window open I’m looking forward to more of that.

    • March says:

Well it looks like now’s the time for some sampling!

  • Richard P says:

    Tilia from Marc-Antoine Barrois

  • Lindy says:

Been looking for one also! It seems like the linden train never hangs around for long. Looking forward to any suggestions ??
