A Bit of This, A Bit of That …

We’ve exited the return to March weather and are now at the beginning of what actually feels like June. The jasmine blossom is starting to open up and in certain spots near the huge vine the air smells heavenly (in a pongy sort of way). We’re back to actually being able to smell the mock orange bushes that reside in the hedgerows (when it’s cold, nothing wafts on the air). Monday (this is going up on the blog Sunday afternoon) is four weeks of no sugar. My brain is playing tug of war: I want scones, cream and jam – no, I don’t; I want a cinnamon bun with tiramisu cream – no, I don’t; I want a couple of scroops of the farm shop’s ice cream – no, I don’t. Am at a complete loss.

I am working on some new-to-me perfumes but wasn’t feeling a post yet. So, a bit of this and that.

First off, there’s a new Neela Vermeire Creations perfume which sounds very intriguing indeed. Can’t get a sample here yet – should be available in another couple of weeks. There’s no point right now in ordering from the US and doing Europe is very hit or miss which all means waiting till something lands here.

Anyway, the fragrance is called Neith and the nose, as with other NVCs, is Bertrand Duchaufour. Per Fragrantica, notes include myrrh, rose, oud, cypriol, black pepper, carnation, labdanum and frankincense. I’ve also seen sandalwood, vanilla and vetiver listed elsewhere. Per the Persolaise site/his video post the Esxense perfume event, this is a very dark perfume. I am deeply curious but will have to be patient.

Neith is a goddess with a dark backstory. Per Wiki, “… possibly of Libyan origin. She was associated with warfare, symbolized by her emblem of crosses bows, and with motherhood, as texts refer to her as the mother of deities such as the sun god Ra and the crocodile god Sobek”.

Second, as I have not really changed my skincare routine bar that new serum thing I mentioned in a vague way last week, a bit on that here. The stuff came from a company called Pelegrims which uses the orts of wine-making. Yes, you can get British wines – and some are very well regarded.

But, skincare. A quote on the Pelegrims site states “… a brand that perfectly captures the zeitgeist of British skincare at the moment” which should really put me off. But, the various reviews around the net were generally very positive about the products – and this one in particular. I will say straight up that a bottle is what I consider stupid money. But the comments about how wonderful the juice is caught me up. Plus the serum is called Rewards of Patience which in a world doing push me/pull you with fast fashion, makeup and skincare piqued my interest.

It’s a decently sized, 50ml, bottle and as I only use it at night it will last me a bit. See, justification. In any case, this stuff is glorious. Light green, viscous. Texture is an oily serum. It is so wonderful to use. A few drops gets you the whole face and neck. So, what’s in it? The orts, as noted, of wine-making (extracts of grapeskins), various plant/flower oils. Noted to be “lightly scented with jasmine, cut flower stems and tomato vine”.  My skin seems to enjoy it immensely. The company is aware of how much customers like the smell of this and recently released a perfume. Sample incoming soon.

Finally, a bit of garden. I am very cross with the slugs and snails who have chosen one lily and one dahlia to bother. I’ve tried salt and aluminium foil to deter them. But, no. So, now it’s broken seashells which should be uncomfortable to traverse. Fingers crossed.

Due to our recent strange weather, the bees, butterflies and dragonflies seem to have retreated. So, I got a lavender plant in full flower in the hope of luring them back. Fingers crossed.

But, I wouldn’t be surprised if they are off being busy with the blackberry bushes in the village, which are totally covered in blossom this year. If I were an insect I would prioritise that too vs my garden.

Late to the party! I’ve cut way back on sugar recently, but allowing myself to have small bits of it seems to alleviate me completely losing my mind and eating a batch of cookies. My skin is thanking me for the reset. Neith sounds fantastic! Re the skincare, plugging my ears and saying lalalalala I can’t hear you!

    • cinnamon says:

Neith does sound really good. It’s more expensive than Eshal though so I think I’m going to have to try it in-store somewhere vs buying a pricey sample.

Sugar … it’s in so many things I guess for me it’s figuring out which ones have a negative effect and steering clear of those: eg, I seem to be ok with plain croissants where maybe the fat cancels out the sugar (?) but candy, ice cream, pastries, etc are more problematic.

  • Portia says:

    Hey Cinnamon,
I can’t even fathom eliminating sugar, it’s in everything. Congratulations.

Can’t wait to try Neith. It sounds divine.
    Portia xx

I eat a lot of fruit and am trying to up the veg intake which of course all includes types of sugar. I can’t eat a lot of protein — and I’m better with the plant-based stuff vs animal except fish is ok. It’s really added sugar and stuff that is basically sugar (sweet baked goods, candy, milk vs dark chocolate, any sodas) that I found were issues for me.

Neith does sound incredible. Can you get NVC without ordering online? I doubt I’ll be able to sample until I’m next in London.

(now that I am out of spam jail)

Sugar is in everything here, especially condiments. Ketchup, mayo, pickles and all of them with sugar, corn syrup, honey, whatever.

Years ago my friend turned me on to making green smoothies in the AM. All those greens I hate blended raw with yoghurt and some frozen berries to make it less gawawful. Taste sensation it ain’t, but I am not eating Kale for my amusement. Or the taste.

  • alityke says:

Well done on the elimination of sugar from your diet.
    The serum sounds beautiful.

    • cinnamon says:

Well, I ate some stuff yesterday as it’s my son’s birthday week and did not sleep well. I think I will indulge very carefully and then go back to no sugar after the big day.

That’s exactly it: the serum is beautiful. It’s a joy to use and I do think it is having a positive effect.

  • Tom says:

The Neith reads gorgeous. I hope I can get a sample here. I love that your treating your garden issues with natural deterrents. So much better than just carpet bombing the place with poison. (Not that I would rule that out..)

Our weather cannot figure out what to do. Yesterday was actually hot during the day then at night it dropped 30 degrees (F), which I am not complaining about. (much) This coming Sunday is the Father’s Day Concours on Rodeo Drive. It’s supposed to be quite pleasant- 70F. I plan on getting there early and blitzing my way through it.

    • cinnamon says:

Please sample Neith once Lucky Scent has it. I think it’s going to be hard to get samples here and I get the sense they will be very expensive, given the bottle price is higher than that for Eshal.

What happens at the Father’s Day event? Is Rodeo Drive closed and there are fun things to see and do?

      • Tom says:

Yes, The three shopping blocks of Rodeo (which is mostly residential) are closed off and filled with classic cars and some sponsored stuff I don’t care about (If I wanted to see the new Lexus’ I could walk a few blocks down Wilshire, thanks. It’s fun, but it gets really crowded and hot if you aren’t there at the opening.

  • Dina C. says:

I’m right with you on food elimination diets, Cinnamon. I recently had blood work done and am now deleting seven things from my menu. I’m trying to reduce inflammation and thus reduce allergies, asthma, eczema, migraines, and gut issues. It’s a challenge! I’m reading ingredients on packaging like crazy. Good luck!

    • cinnamon says:

Oh, my. There are quite a few things I don’t eat due to meds, conditions, and braces. It’s a bit of a joke. What are you removing?

      • Dina C. says:

Wheat, yeast, corn/maize, tomato, milk, coffee, and chocolate. Wheat and corn are the hardest. I’m not a coffee person thankfully.

        • cinnamon says:

Have you tried hojicha green tea? Lower caffeine and strangely satisfying in the morning. Be very interested to hear how the food removals affect you.

  • lee says:

Hi Cinnamon- household has been sugar free for 4 weeks, husband has lost 9kg, I’ve gained 1- sooo unfair, drove me to order a non vintage bottle of Calandre as a salve,( at least it wasn’t a tub of ice cream )have never smelled modern version so fingers crossed.. Neith sounds glorious but don’t know if it will make its way to Oz any time soon.

    • cinnamon says:

9kg… that’s a wow. a perfume as compensation makes perfect sense to me 🙂 I have smelled Calandre in decades but recall it being wonderful. As to Neith down under, maybe Portia will know.
